Rising stars Isis Lowrey and Maddie Green competed at the 2010 WOGA Classic and Nadia Comaneci Invitational over two weekends in February.
Read their travel blogs about the WOGA event here and the Nadia event here.
You can read Interntional Gymnast Magazine's coverage of the Nadia event (routines and scores published live for the website) here. Isis features.
Sounds like they had an entertaining time, visiting popular attractions and mingling with international competitors... they also met a few famous faces along the way. Well done, girls, on representing Australia at such prestigious events.
You can see some videos of Isis courtesy of Gymnastike below (why yes, that is an instrumental version of Rage Against The Machine...).
just wondering - how old/what level(s) are the gymnasts in this competition?
ReplyDeleteMH
isis competed IDP8 last year so i expect she will do IDP 10 this year not sure how old she is but i would say somewhere around 12. Maddi used to do International level but competed National 10 last year so not sure what she will do this year - she is about 16 i think.
ReplyDeleteIsis did really well to have gone from IDP 8 last year to now competing with 15 year old international elites. She even managed to score 13.000 on beam! Hopefully she will get better and better.
ReplyDeleteMeh... she's old enough to be pointing her toes isn't she?
ReplyDeleteHow about a little love for Lydia Lassila (nee Ierodiaconou), the new Olympic aerial champion? She's a former elite gymnast. This is what her NBC biography says about her:
ReplyDelete'Lassila didn't become a skier until 1999, prior to which she was a gymnast for nine years. She was attempting to make the Australian team for the Sydney Olympics, but multiple injuries to her wrists and ankles derailed her efforts to make the 2000 Olympic team, and she gave up the sport. Lassila says that the transition from gymnastics to skiing was relatively straightforward. With the ability to flip already in place, all she had to do was learn how to ski.'
Isis is 14 (born 1996). So her skills are a bit behind for that age in elite. Huge potential but in a levels program and environment. Ross does not let her participate in elite clinics. I know Peggy has tried to get her to camp for years now. Not sure what his motivation is.
ReplyDeleteNot sure where the previous anonymous person gets his/her information from...but perhaps they should consider checking their facts before posting.
ReplyDeleteIsis trains in an international program, albeit in a club which also offers a national program.
Isis has attended a number of international level clinics in the past for up and coming Australian elite gymnasts. I know this for a fact.
To comment 'Ross does not let her participate in elite clinics. I know Peggy has tried to get her to camp for years now. Not sure what his motivation is' - is simply wrong and shows a complete lack of knowledge of the situation.
I am so glad you made that comment annon. I had similar thoughts but didn't know where to start with what was wrong with the post. Sounds like someone has an axe to grind. Isis has indeed trained the IDP program for some time, possibly always. IDP 6 in 2008 (when there was no IDP camp), IDP 8 last year and probably 10 or junior this year.
ReplyDeleteIt is a FACT that Isis did NOT attend the January elite camp.
ReplyDeleteThe January camp in Canberra was attended by only the National squads and some selected gymnasts - i don't think anyone who competed under IDP 10 was invited
ReplyDeleteAlexandra Eade was there, Amelia McGrath was there.
ReplyDeleteBoth competed IDP10 last year - Isis competed IDP8
ReplyDeleteIsis was invited, IDP 8 or not. The point is that she has been identified as talented enough to be in the elite group, but her coach has not allowed her to come to the camps. Try to stop trying to be right and let's try to find out why Isis is being held back and not being given the opportunity to develop along side the other 14 year olds. Maybe she doesn't want to represent Australia at the elite level, who knows, but she should at least be able to have a chance and then have the information to make that decision with her parents.
ReplyDeleteIt is great to see such interest in Isis Lowery - she is indeed an exciting gymnast to watch for the future!
ReplyDeleteFor the record...Isis attended the IDP 6-8 clinic in Brisbane in 2008 and also the IDP clinic in Perth in 2009, following nationals where Isis came 2nd in Australia in the all-around competition! (which also shows that Isis was part of the Victorian state team and would have attended state trainings!!)
Consider this...perhaps Isis did not attend the January camp because she already had a US gymnastics trip organised in February! What a fantastic experience for Isis and Maddie!
Be assured, any decision made by Isis, her parents and her coaches is in the best interests of Isis as an international level gymnast and as a young individual.
In response to the following statement:
"...but her coach has not allowed her to come to the camps. Try to stop trying to be right and let's try to find out why Isis is being held back and not being given the opportunity to develop along side the other 14 year olds."
- Isis has a number of coaches, and together with Isis and her parents they all make decisions affecting Isis's gymnastics career.
- Isis has attended at least 2 x IDP clinics in the past two years. This proves that clearly her coaches DO support the IDP clinics and DO allow Isis to participate alongside other gymnasts her age.
- It is important to be right before making public statements about anyone, particularly young gymnasts and their coaches who may not be in a position to defend themselves as they do not read this blog.
- Isis is far from being held back, rather she is being allowed to develop as an international gymnast; is being followed closely by Jo and Peggy by partaking in routine IDP testing and clinics; and in addition to this, she has recently had the amazing opportunity of competing at the WOGA Classic and the Nadia Comaneci Invitational in the US, alongside elite gymnasts from around the world!
So let's stop trying to push myths about Isis's coaches and decisions made in relation to Isis's gymnastics. Isis is being given every chance to succeed and reach her true potential and not only Isis, but her parents, coaches, club and program deserve the full support of the Australian gymnastics community.
OMG there is so much interest in our top gymnasts. I had no idea until I discovered this site. It's fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know what percentage of bloggers are keen fans and what percentage are parents.
Wow, Rage Against the Machine in instrumental gets a little bit James Bond, doesn't it?!!
ReplyDeleteIs Isis going to the trial for the Pac Rim team?
ReplyDeleteShe might trial, but would have next to no chance of making the team right now anyway - she needs some more time to develop her program, especially on bars since she has no release or dismount.
ReplyDeletewow.........its great that people are so interested in up and coming gymnasts, and I say all girls in all programs whether an Institute or club HPC's, surley are all very talented, with coaches who are specialists in their field with the best interests of the gymnast in mind, and the reason for them being at eihter is their business I suppose. Waverly and MLC and now Jets ( Jets who have had this HPC'S for over five years) have proven to actually help increase the already small number of girls that reach great hights, by making it more accessible to young families who struggle to even get them to all the hrs and cover expenses, so that has to be a bonus. I agree they need the support and encouragement of the institutes as they can only help with the overall exposure of gymnastics in general. As Austalia does not have the depth as many other countries(or populaton), I think any girl having the courage and belief in themselves to have a fair crack at the top national and elite levels should be applauded.
ReplyDeleteThey all have there strengths and weakness's, and all develop and grow at different times ,so thus allowing skill developement to be at different rates, so age can be quite irrelevant in the end, its really survival of the toughest, and longevity in the sport depends on the management of there bodies and the little ailments along the way.
On the topic of Isis and Madeline,
I know they are both at a terrific club who support them individually and both love there gymnastics, Isis and Maddie would have got some amazing experience in the USA, and i know will both be trying to have a solid year this year with routines, Isis in the Int 10 or Junior Level, and Maddie in Senior level.
Both very different gymnasts, Isis a very powerful body, and Maddie very elegant and beautiful body line (Nastia type), skills from what i see are coming along, so good on them I say. I've had the pleasure of seeing them at Nationals etc and like so many of the girls in this country I see have real potential.
All HPC's in vic are very solid programs from what i see, and if we are going to learn from any one it may be useful to go by what America do and have very strong national levels, then go junior and senior elite. It would sure make comps bigger and better here, increase numbers !!?? who knows, I think it used to be more like that awhile ago, and there are probably good and bad points to it, as our population is quite small.
I say enjoyment of the journey to your dreams is pretty important, if thirty or so hrs per wk training, learning amazing life skills, time management, self belief, meeting amazing people, and travelling to great places, as well as studying,is your idea of enjoyment, then gymnastics is for you I say.
Good luck to Isis and Maddie, who I know will hopefully be given a chance to shine in the next few years, and of course we are all cheering the girls who are ready now to shine at the Pan Pacifics go Aussies !
hello guys, I like your blog is very interesting your subject .... I would like to receive information about this!
