WAG Nationals: Senior/Junior EF Wrap-Up

(courtesy of Gymnastics Australia)

Scroll down to find full EF results available here.

Thoughts from national coach Peggy Liddick are here.

National AA champ Georgia Bonora is on the front page of International Gymnast Online here.

In a brief rhythmic wrap-up: national all around champ Naazmi Johnston won all four apparatus golds!

Keep your eye on the GA Facebook group for photos.

Men's Nationals kick off on Tuesday from Canberra, so check back here for news and results (admittedly my coverage will not be as comprehensive as the women's coverage. But not having sources on the scene coupled with working 4/5 days next week doesn't exactly help).

  1. I see in the vault results that the gymnasts placing 4,5 & 6th all had 2 marks deducted. I think that is due to the second vault being from the same family. It makes their scores look really bad. Without that penalty, Emma would have finished in 3rd place with an average of 13.125, edging out Georgia W.
    Vault finals are always strange.

  2. Looking at the scores I notice that Sophie Budack only competed a layout full yurchenko. I am sure that I read a while ago that she competed a one and a half.

Does anyone know what the story is there? And what was her second vault? Is there any chance of her upgrading in the near future?

  3. I don't think she ever competed a 1.5 but there was talk of her training a good double twisting yurchenko. If she had that by October she could very well make the 6 person team for worlds I think.

  4. Has anybody put up anything on you tube yet???

  5. Didn't one of the reports on this blog say she warmed up a one and a half yurchenko and landed awkward so coaches pulled her out of competition?

She was definitely working the double at one of the AIS camps. She is a powerful vaulter and if she could get her DTY she would be in with a good chance for the team.

I like her style on floor too, but she would need to upgrade her start value for it to be of international standard. Anyone know what she is working on?

  6. I have been watching videos of Angela and squeeeeee she is so adorable. Very promising. Why did she not get selected for Pacific Rim?

I think she could walk onto the worlds team next year if she can sort out vault, because some of our stronger vaulters will probably be gone. Is she working an upgrade on the yurchenko layout? I would love to see her do an onodi on beam also.

  7. Quick question: does anyone know if the coaching staff have changed again at AIS? All of the coaches have been removed from the website.

  8. there was a small article in the sunday mail in QLD yesterday

  9. when are the videos going to be put up??
    please do it soon.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't know anything about videos.

Brindabella certainly didn't take any (her phone wasn't capable, if I recall correctly).

    ReplyDelete
  11. I wonder if Bill Dennis or any of the Waverley parents videoed? And if so, if they would be willing to share?

    ReplyDelete
  12. seems like videos will be hard to come by this year unfortunately....

    ReplyDelete
  13. Why don't you ask Gymnastics Australia on Facebook if they are planning on putting any up? If they think there is interest, maybe they will? They filmed every session.

  14. Hey Mez, I know you don't report on acro but just thought people should know that the Aussie 11-16 women's trio made the finals at the world age games (junior worlds) and came 8th! From 27 groups this is fantastic.
GA are a bit slow to report only just putting up details about the opening ceremony when the competition is over.

  15. Angela wasn't selected because she wasn't ready. It's that simple.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mr Dennis was not in attendance at Nationals.

    ReplyDelete
  17. sorry anon at 11.14am - what are you talking about?? Have i missed something?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Someone earlier asked why Angela did not make the Pac Rim team. The question was being answered, so yes, you did miss something! :)

  19. Thank you - thought i was going mad!!

  20. I find it strange reading the article in International Gymnast online and then see a photo of Natalia, an old one at that in her oz leo. That does'nt make sense that they would put her photo in over the Australian Snr or Jnr Champions. Its also a shame that she always has to be connected to Dasha in any media reports.Dasha has not done anything for 2 years and judging by watching her train when in Perth, she has a long way to go.The media reports should go to the ones that have earnt it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. TBH, IG probably just scoops out any old photo they can find. I wouldn't read too much into it. I doubt they had one of Angela, and all their ones of Georgia are obviously from big meets where she has competed and they have had their own photographers there.

  22. I am going out on a limb..........................

The picture is the Comm Games team.

  23. I just posted it 'cause I thought it was a nice pic. ^_^;;

  24. Hey look, Shona smiles..............

First time for the week at Nationals. Never seen such a grumpy, sullen girl before.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Does anyone know when the 12 girls selected for worlds trial 2 will be announced?

Will there be any athletes petitioning to the camp besides Emily and Lauren?

There seem to be a couple that could have a shot like Greeley, Lorenzin, and Russell if they will be healthy by then.

Maybe I'm going mad, but I could have sworn Greeley was down to compete at nationals. What happened?

  26. Anon 10.54pm you may be better off getting an earlier night's sleep so you are a nicer and more well adjusted person, rather than posting bitchy little comments on a blog.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Whilst Anon 10.54pm did make a point in a bitchy way, he/she does have a point.

Was Shona unwell at Nationals? She never looked happy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anon at 8.18Pm... no way is this pic the Comm Games team- where's Lauren? And Sophie Budack is probably not quite ready yet despite her vaulting gold. There is no way Gerogia would get in over MM too... just a pic of some of the girls looking happy at the comp.

    ReplyDelete
  29. To anon 2.21

You are obviously a child (perhaps even MM herself). The fact that you would even make a comment shows your immaturity.
I am sure that the person who posted the comment was just saying it as pun as it was such a lovely pic with such lovely girls.
As a Victorian fan I hope that GW and Shona get in over MM as they are twice the gymnasts that MM is and ever will be.
You just need to read the comments on this site to see that the majority of the Australian gymnastic community think that MM should not be on the team as she has not earnt it and is clearly not ready.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Shona was unwell, well done for her to compete anyway, I thought fans wanted to see the top girls compete! Instead you prefer to crucify them for trying although unwell! I hope Shona doesnt read the nasty things being said about her, she is a lovely, bubbly, friendly, intellegent girl who deserves alot more respect that alot of you give her!

A pun? Do you even know what a pun is? Its a play on different senses of a word. The person stated that they were going out on a limb and saying that this pic is of the Comm Games team. It may have been sarcasm or silliness but it certainly wasn't a pun.

And as for MM getting in over Georgia and Sophie- I meant GW not Bonora- this is clear. MM came second overall and Sophie and GW were further down so MM should get in over those girls. I was just pointing out that Mez (blogger) put up a nice pic of some of the girls on a bar mat- not because its 'the team' (there are notable absent gymnasts including Lauren)but because they all look lovely and happy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. dear anon 4.49 (MM)

You obviously have a hard time reading as I said GW and Shona, not Georgia Bonora and Sophie Budack.

Perhaps you should concentrate more on your gymnastics than writing on this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dear anon at 7.23pm,
I am a 28 year old woman who coaches and judges, who understands what a pun is and appreciates elegant gymnastics. To claim I am MM is quite ridiculous- I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be on here blowing her own trupet anonymously as she's commented here before using her own name.
    regards anon 4.49pm

  34. Good grief what strange, bitchy and petty people follow the sport of gymnastics, if this bog is anything to go by.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lol. Bog. Freudian slip? Or accurate description of current conversation?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Freudian slip and tendency to type too quickly!

  37. why is everyone attacking each other? aren't we supposed to be admiring and commenting on the gymnasts?? its not far to attack each other.

    just think about that...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Quite honestly, I think Georgia Wheeler is much more experienced than MM, however I don't believe either will be selected.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Of course GW is more 'experienced' than MM. With Paris World Cup, and Pacific Rim under her belt...
