CWG: Monckton Out, Wheeler In

News out of Canberra is that Mary-Anne Monckton is injured, and has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games team. Reserve position gymnast Georgia Wheeler will replace her.

Gymnastics Australia has the full details here.

The 15-year-old landed on an edge of a tumbling strip, forcing a short landing which resulted in a rupture of the ligament between the tibia and fibula (Tibiofibular Syndesmosis).

MLC Gymnastics has issued a statement here, including an update on Georgia's skills.

"... On vault, Georgia has made some good improvements with her double twisting Yurchenko, but this is certainly not ready for competition this year. This type of skill will take a long while to consolidate for competition readiness, and we are certainly not taking any risks at this stage in Georgia's development, but her sound improvement in the basics of this vault will certainly allow her a good platform for 2011."
Very best wishes to Mary-Anne and to Georgia in these new circumstances.

  1. What a shame for Mary-Anne, she has had such a bad run with injuries. Here's hoping she recovers soon. I wonder if Shona regrets her NCAA decision now?

  2. No, I think that with the number of injuries known ro be in the team, Shona would have known she was a likely call up. My guess is that she was willing to miss the start of the NCAA year to do CWG but when she was overlooked for selection, she said "@& yours" to GA.

I say good on her. The upside is that GW will get some great experience.

  3. Can MAM ever get a break? So much potential...hope she keeps it up...difficult to maintain motivation with so many setbacks.

  7. Yes hopefully the best is yet to come.
Speaking of Dasha, any news about her is she still training, if so is she making progress, is there any chance of her returning to competition?

  8. well lets not dwell on what can't be changed...2010 also had some great successes look at Angela's performance at Youth Olympics and Georgia B and Ashleigh continuing on :)

  9. Another 'High' of 2010 would have to be Mary-Anne's 2nd place finish at Nationals
So sad to think she is injured again.

  10. Did GA consider PacRim attendance to be poor? I was at all the WAG sessions and was pleasantly surprised by how big the crowd was, except maybe for the first session where the smaller countries competed. Considering most Australians have never heard of the competition, I think they did a great job to attract as many spectators as they did.

  11. Any updates on the ais saga?

  12. THe "AIS saga" is no saga. A decision has been made to close the residential program and the gymnasts have been given adequate notice (6 months is plenty enough time to work out what to do and where to go).

  13. "adequate notice"

If you look back, the 'announcement' was made sometime early August...That's 4 months if my counting is correct?

  14. Oh please ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! with all this "poor AIS" thing.
Scholarships at any of the high performance centers are only given for the duration of the year. So it's never definite whether a gymnast will be training the following year regardless. The idea that the AIS will be closing at the end of the year has been voiced on a number of occasions on this blog over the past 18 months, so this was no surprise.
To anon 9.35 and anon 10.06 (6 months/4 months) is enough time to sort out things. My husband was in the army and we moved around quite a bit, and 4 months is adequate time to get new jobs and organize schools etc.
I think way too big a thing is being made over the closure, we need to move on and concentrate on the more important things happening in gymnastics in Australia. ;)

  15. As for highs of 2010, no offence anon @ 7:36pm but would probably have mentioned Georgia winning nationals before I mentioned Mary-anne coming 2nd!?, whilst her competing again was great there are many girls that have serious injuries and work really have to recover...Shona pretty much tore her achillies off the bone in 2006 and worked incredibly hard to be on the 2008 olympic team. I have the opinion that all elite gymnasts are amazing and each go through incredible journeys to get to senior level (even those that don't make the big teams) Just so sick of everyone dwelling on what the Aussie girls don't have and can't do, yes it would be great for the country to start winning medals but sport's not all about the winning, cliche I know but it's the journey and the achievements along the way that count!

  16. Of course Georgia B winning nationals was awesome! But She was mentioned in the post above, and it was not really a surprise that she won. Mary-anne on the other hand was a huge surprise, that no one saw coming, that's what I consider exciting.

  17. No offence to Mary-anne, but the only reason she came second was because Lauren and Emily were injured and Shona was sick. In all reality a 52? placing 2nd AA was no great achievement, rather a pretty lucky twist of fate and a sad reflection of the current state of gymnastics in australia.

  18. Look, you guys know I let most comments slide without calling out the author, or deleting the remark, but I feel I have to set down one of my (admittedly few) comment rules:

Please don't ever ever ever ever EVER preface your comments on here - or any comment you might make if we're ever in discussion in person - with "No offense to [x]" or "No offense, but..."

    Thanks.

  19. Yay Mez,

The other one that p's me off is " With all due respect" ... meaning, "I have no respect at all for you, but I'll demean myself and respond."

Honestly, to tell the truth, in all fairness, to be perfectlt frank, we're about back to where the old gossip baord was. Negative anonymous comment. Crap

    Ribbit

  20. Mez, when you say "calling out the author", what do you mean.
And btw, I am not the one who posted the previous comment and I agree that nasty comments don't belong on this blog, but I also don't see any harm with what was said. That person seems to be merely pointing out the facts and didn't want to put MM down.
