Delhi 2010: Day 2

Can Australia go two-for-two tonight, and see the women win just like the men? Will a fourth consecutive women's team gold elude them? Or prove an easy victory?

I gots me some tingles!

PREPARE: Read this article. Alternatively, read this just-released update from Peggy Liddick!
"All brand new Gymnova equipment, very nice, no complaints from the girls at all. Light session in AM, then good session in the evening. "
You can check out the event start list here.

EXPLORE: Pre and post-event updates and media at the Herald Sun site, The Age site or official Delhi2010 site.

WATCH: Live on Foxtel's Delhi Gold from 9:55 AEDST this evening with Liz Chetkovich and Garry Wilkinson commentating. You can also watch a delayed broadcast around 10:00pm on Channel Ten, overseen by Stephanie Moorhouse and Dan Ryan. Last night, Ten broadcast the last two rotations simultaneously with Foxtel from 11:00...

Australia is in subdivision 2 and starts on beam.

NOTE: I have been given a heads-up that Channel Ten will indeed be picking up the tail-end of the competition after swimming at around 11pm. Also, their cameras are spending some time at one team member's house to film family reactions to the competition, so keep your eyes peeled tonight and tomorrow morning during Good Morning Delhi!

It'll pay to watch Channel Ten's evening news on Wednesday, as tonight's edition featured some behind-the-scenes footage of the Aussie men (including a pre-march-out physio work and team huddle; a short soundbite from Tom's wife; Prashanth putting his medal around his mum's neck and Luke crowing "That's what I'm talkin' about!" into the camera)

DISCUSS: Right here, with me, live, at your AGB. Alternatively, follow (my occasional) livetweets at twitter.com/ozgymblog.

  1. Aussies begin at 9.55 AEDST. They are in subdivision two. Coverage is live from 7.55 for subdivsion one. Sub two will finish a bit after midnight (I will be tired tomorrow!) I have them both IQ-ed up! Though I'll definitely be watching live.

Last night's coverage was a little annoying- kept watching gymnasts waiting to start apparatus rather than watching those currently, actually competing. I don't care to watch someone spitting in their hands, shaking their ankles waiting to vault when there's an Aussie competing floor in the background. That being said, they did show a nice variety of athletes which was good.

Hopefully they get the timing right tonight! Can't wait to see the girls!!

  4. I thought the competition was weird. The most bizarre thing to me was that absolutely no music was played for marching. It was just awkward silence!

I also thought those marching soldiers in the ceremony were hilarious! It was so odd, in this empty stadium and laid back medal ceremony having these guys marching like they were in a military formation. Look out for them tonight if you missed them.

  5. Those marching guys are hilarious. I first saw them at the swimming and even the swimmers were trying not to laugh! If they're not careful they could take someone's eye out with that swing!

  6. Peggy's updates are great, hope they keep coming throughout the games! It would seem GA are really making an effort to inform the fans, well done!

  7. According to the start list http://results.cwgdelhi2010.org/en/Comp.mvc/Info/StartList/GAW099902 Ashleigh will be competing vault.

  8. According to that start list no Australian is competing two vaults, thus not eligible for vault finals. I'm guessing that this is because they are going for for maximum team score but seems a shame that Emily's not having a go for vault finals. I would have thought with a decent DTY as long as the second vault was nice that would be a pretty good chance in the commonwealth. Does anyone remember what she competed as second vault at pac rims? I'm pretty sure it was a handspring front pike and she medalled there.

  9. why doesn't Emily have an * next to her name to indicate two vaults? Surely she would be aiming for a vault medal?!

  10. Emily won a silver medal at Pac Rim with a DTY and a handspring front pike, 5.8 and 4.6. It does surprise me that she isn't going for vault final. She would have to have been a chance to win the vault final as I think Imogen Cairns has something like a 5.3 and a 4.8. Maybe Emily wants to focus on AA, I still do find it strange though.

  11. I think we can make the assumption from that list that Emily is not competing two vaults.

  12. Glad some other people agree with me in thinking it's a little strange re. Emily and vault finals. Think it's a huge shame because I think she would have been a great chance particularly given she's supposedely been sticking those DTYs. But I'm sure its all for the best.

  13. wtf? that's basically throwing a medal away! I guess maybe she wasn't ready after her injuries, but what a huge shame

  14. I don't know if her injuries would be the problem. If she sticking her DTY's then I am sure she can do a handspring front pike and by the sounds of what happened at camp she has improved on other apparatus' too. Maybe Emily wanted to put the team ahead of her own indivdual chances and ensure the highest team score possible. I do think she should have had a go at vault finals but to the girls the team comes first.

  15. I agree that a handspring front pike should be way less taxing on injuries than a DTY - no lateral rotation to worry about on landing etc.

I guess it will be justified if the team competition is a close one however a big shame if Australia has a big buffer in the team competition.

  16. Remember there's 3 more days of training/competition after today in Delhi, then travelling to Rotterdam followed by 16 or so days of training/competition there. All this after the gruelling demands of the Rotterdam Worlds Selection Trials, training camp and verifications in Canberra. It's always easy for us arm-chair coaches!!!!

  17. Liz said in her commentary last night that Emily is not yet back to where she needs to be (from injury)to do her second vault and try and qualify for vault finals. I agree it's a shame that there will be no Aussies but it's better than getting injured again so close to Worlds.
