(I think it's interesting that they used a version of the anthem that included lyrics rather than an instrumental)
And here is her 'homecoming' (along with Emily and Georgia's, of course) as shown on Nine News:
It also features here at FoxSportsNews (includes extended video).
Print press coverage here and here.
Get used to it, sister-girlfriend. That medal's going to take you places!"Maybe a few more people will recognise me around and about but my life's still going to be the same.
"I guess I didn't get the whole extremity of everything because I was away (from Australia when I won the gold medal) and I think everyone back here got the full force of it.
"And so coming back on the end of it, everyone's like 'oh my god!', and I'm like 'what?'"
As her journey ends, so does my coverage of Delhi and Rotterdam.
Thanks everyone for logging on, dropping in, stopping by and popping past. It's been the best fun I've had in a long time, and I know it'll take a longer time to wipe this huge grin off my face.
Additional thanks to every single source on the scene at both big competitions for taking the time to capture Aussie gymnasts in action. We appreciate all the information you have shared and the effort you went to in order to share it.
What an amazing month of gymnastics for Australia!
Glad to have been one small part of it.
There is plenty of continued media interest in Lauren and in conjunction with her coaches and program, a full schedule of appearances and opps will be made known, once she lands, sleeps and has time to breathe.
ReplyDeleteGOLD MEDAL FOR MEDIA APPERANCES TO LAUREN MITCHELL!
ReplyDeleteAlso - plane travelling, sleeping and breathing. ;)
She has been an absolute trooper. She did interviews the whole way from Rotterdam to Amsterdam before getting on the plane.
ReplyDeleteLauren is a great sporting role model who we all need to get behind (once again) and see if we can't get her up as a candidate for the Sports Performer of the Year award.
Vote as we might, you just KNOW it'll go to thingummyface swimmer girl from the Commonwealth Games.
ReplyDeleteOr Geoff Huegill/Sally Pearson and their ONE Commnwealth gold medal.
Mez you're coverage of the Comm games and Worlds have been awesome. Thankyou very much
ReplyDeleteat least Sally Pearson used to be a gymnast so there is a little gym-connection there!
ReplyDeletei wouldn't rule Lauren out entirely because she is a world champion and i think that means far more than CWG. Geoff Huegill actually won two and I think he has done is pretty special. But go Lauren!!
ReplyDeleteLauren arrives home video clip now on this page:- http://www.gymnastics.org.au/default.asp?Page=18569
ReplyDeleteAgreed with Anon 8:53 - have been extremely happy with the Comm Games/Worlds coverage between yourself and the Couch Gymnast. Kept me much more in the loop than previous years.
ReplyDeleteThink ALL our gymnasts did a FANTASTIC job and at least met my expectations. Terrific job by Lauren, but also Georgia B, Ash, Larissa, Emily and Georgia W. Look forward to hearing/seeing Georgia S in the future.
Message to Gymnastics Australia - Take advantage of this opportunity and exploit this wonderful achievement to the benefit of this wonderful sport in Australia. Start pushing for more attention for the gymnasts and build up the attention.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much to Mez for providing us with all of this fabulous information over the last couple of weeks. I don't know where us Aussie gymn fans would have been without you. I can only imagine the countless amount of time and effort that went into keeping us informed on all of our Aussie gymnasts over the past few weeks. So thank u so so much and we hope you'll be able to do the same for upcoming gymnastics competitions :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Mez to you and all your contacts for the amazing updates and reports over the last few weeks. Your passion and dedication in delivering news to all of us fans is very much appreciated.
ReplyDelete*HINT* Video/stream of nationals *HINT*
ReplyDeleteSeriously, next year's nationals in Perth are going to be so competitive with like 15 new seniors and it will be such suffering for fans and supporters if we yet again go without any videos whatsoever.
Can I suggest an online petition backed up by hard copy petitions which could be taken to clubs and competions in each state? Mez, IIRC you have run a petition in the past, would you be prepared to do it again? If we want GA to take action on this it's going to take more than a couple of comments on this blog. They video all the routines anyway so I can't see why they wouldn't post them or at least provide DVD's for sale if they knew the demand was there. Live streaming would be better, does anyone know how that was done in the past? We could post links to the petition here and at other blogs and forums.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mez for all of your coverage. It was great having everything in the one place so that events could be easily followed. You do a great job, especially considering it is something you do in your own time and not for money. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteIn the past (08) they have had a paid stream to watch on demand after the comp. But I don't think they even need to spend money like that, it costs nothing to upload the recorded routines to Youtube. People would be happy with that, they just want to see the routines.
ReplyDeleteI would even pay up to $100 for a DVD with all the SNR/JNR routines on it for example. For me, following gym is my main interest and passion outside of work/uni/etc etc, and it is disappointing that because I cannot always afford to travel across the country for nationals I have years without seeing any routines from our own athletes.
Fantastic coverage as always Mez...these last few weeks in gymland have been tops and we have you to thank for it. You've done an amazing job and we're so appreciative :)
ReplyDeleteAnd well done to Lauren, Larrissa, Ashleigh, Georgia W, Georgia B, Emily and Georgia S on a terrific CWG and Worlds. Never have I been more proud of you!
Brinds
I wonder if they would consider holding nationals on a podium in the future - perhaps competing on a podium prior to worlds contributed to the team's success?
ReplyDeleteThey usually do but apparently just not in Perth....it was on podium 2006/2007/2008 and even as far back as 2000/2001/2002 it was as well.
ReplyDeleteDyaaaaaaw thanks all. I wasn't expecting kudos!
ReplyDeleteMaybe not, but you deserve it!
ReplyDeleteAccording to GA our very own world champion will be in Melbourne this weekend.
