  1. WA States are 25 - 27 June.

  2. Anyone interested in news from the UK can now get free access to British Gymnastics "Gymnast" magazine. It is an online page turner type arrangement.

  3. there are some camp pics on vwhpc facebook. Not a single QAS athlete is there. Are they having money problems again?

Also, has Celeste moved to mbc? Her leo matches theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Anon 11:25 do you REALLY think that money comment was an appropriate comment to make?

Please don't bring that kind of discussion here.

    ReplyDelete
  5. No, it is a legitimate issue that they have made public. Last year they appealed through the media as they didn't have enough funding. It's no great secret, if you bothered to do your research you would know that.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hasn't Celeste received a QAS scholarship.. The juniors and younger girls are being looked after up here which is great.

    ReplyDelete
  7. ? she was not on the list earlier in the year, it would have to be a very recent move.

The Gym Qld site has been down for nearly a week, which is why things seem weird. Why, if not money related, did nobody from QAS go? Surely not every athlete there is that badly injured?

    ReplyDelete
  8. good to see that Simpson did the verification, hopefully this means she will get one of the assignments and has recovered from her injuries.

  9. who are the 6 little girls in the front row with red leotards on?? (in the april camp photo on vwhpc facebook)

    ReplyDelete
  10. SA IDP Girls. No idea what they are doing there.

    ReplyDelete
  11. are they not part of the camp?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yes they were part of the camp - there were other there not just the Olypmic Squad

    ReplyDelete
  13. SA girls are there because their coaches are giving them the opportunity to learn new skills whilst being surrounded by the senior squads. i take my hat off to the SA coaches for giving them the opportunity. I believe this is why they are so successful at competitions. unlike other clubs who only send a select number of girls.

Why?? Anon: 12:41pm do you think they are not good enough, dont be a gymnastic snob, they all train the same hours they diserve to be there.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Omg. I made the comment at 12.41 in response to a question about who the little girls were and I think you may have misunderstood me. I thought this was an Olympic squad camp and given that there are junior national squad members missing I thought the presence of a small number of IDP girls was a bit unusual. No comment about whether they 'deserve' to be there was made. I think it's safe to say that they weren't taking place in the regular camp and verifications or as part of the national squad. I also think the exposure will be a great experience for them so good on SA for making it happen.

    ReplyDelete
  15. anyone know who is in the back row, end of line, next to Tierra?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that's Karena Brooks?

    ReplyDelete
  17. pretty sure it's not her - she retired i think

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am glad the SA girls went. With SA being a growing program, they don't get enough exposure to large numbers of seniors in action. A wonderful opportunity.

And, I can't remember her name but the SA girl on the far left is an absolute gun!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. There were 2 camps simultaniously, sr. & jr. run at different times. Karina & Crystal Yeo made national squad. SA idp girls went with other jr. celeste is at castle hill.

    ReplyDelete
  20. so where's Budack/Joura/Wurth/Tarvit/Jones/Boffo?

    ReplyDelete
  21. The SASI kids are pretty good and I think its important that the IDP gymnasts have some exposure, as they're a new program.

Celeste is definitely still at Castle Hill, as least she was at the beginning of April when CH last updated their website.

Its so exciting to have such a large squad this year!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Karina Brooks is training very good from what I have seen she is working:

    VT: Yuchenko 2/1 - 1.5 onto hard

UB: Shap - jaeger - takatchev - double lay 1/1 twist

BB: Ariel to layout - front pike

FX: Double pike and tuck and full in to pit

Definatley someone to watch out for :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. mez, you never announced the winners of the AGB awards!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I dont think Karina ever really got credit for how good she was. She has that balance between power and form. Her bars especially had a great swing.

The last time I saw her live was in 2008 at Nationals. Where has she been all this time? I know she's had a few injuries, and am really glad to see her back. Same with Naomi Lee.

If you have any info about the skills of any other girls on the national team, please let us know! I love hearing those snippets more than anything.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Is there a reason why only 10 of the 23 girls on the junior national team attended this camp? Was it by invite? They were trialling for two comps so I would have thought more would go and compete for the experience.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi all ... way OT, but there's nowhere else I can go. Does anyone know the name of the music that was used for the subbies floor routines around 1990s?? Or a Youtube link to a routine from then? I've searched everywhere, and I'm getting desparate. Thanks in advance :)

  28. report re: celeste at camp

    ReplyDelete
  29. Were they still using the same music in 2000? There is youtube footage of Michaela Larsson doing floor with the classical piece I remember from the 90s.

Or you may be able to find it on Poetry in Motion documentary?

Otherwise there is a youtube vid of some tiny tot subbies doing floor to a classical version of 'rich girl' but I'm pretty sure that isn't what you were after

    ReplyDelete
  30. The report of Celeste at camp was great. I wish all clubs would do this as it is lovely to hear how all the girls are going not just a selected few.

    ReplyDelete
  31. MLC used to do the best ones but then they randomly quit updating their website unfortunately

    ReplyDelete
  32. IG mag has an update from Peggy

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't believe she mentioned Exum over Chung and McGrath - Chung especially won meets all over the place in late 2010 and easily won national clubs, beating them all. Tierra is improving but consistently finishes lower than the others because of poor e-scores. Crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  34. what about Emily Little? She got no acknowledgment at all! I think her vault should earn her a spot on the team, so long as she hasn't deteriorated since last year.

I dont get Peggy's insistence on Bonora and Brennan - they have been great, but many of the younger girls now have higher d-scores and need a chance to compete. If Bonora will be back again with a double tuck mount and a layout full in her floor routine and a yurchenko full, I would rather give someone like Zoe or Mary-Anne a chance.

If not, email Mark Carlton or track Fiona down maybe??? they are bound to have a video or two stashed away from this ear.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why the hell is Peggy giving her camp analysis to IG before Gymnastics Australia?

    ReplyDelete
  37. what about Angela? Girl won a medal at the youth olympics and gets no love.

I get the vibe that GA has stopped bothering to post anything about camps, they haven't in a long time now. Typical lack of concern with promoting the sport.

    ReplyDelete
  38. After what happened in 2007, I have a feeling Peggy may go with more experienced girls this year, so it does not surprise me.

If it came down to a couple of tenths of difficulty here or there, I just think she would always pick experience over youth. It's such a risk to compete a lot of newcomers in such an important meet, even though I have been impressed with the consistency of the likes of Brown, Donald, Chung and McGrath.

I do hope we don't see veterans picked if they are out of shape and watering down to a great degree though. To get one of those eight olympic berths, it's going to be tough. Japan, Great Britain and Italy are almost certainly in our vicinity, and other teams like France, Brazil, the Netherlands, Canada and especially Germany will expect to rise in the standings this time around. We could very well be pushed out of the eight if we don't compete the highest valued routines we have.

If we are competing yurchenko 1/1s and floor routines valued under 5.4 or so, it's going to be incredibly tight. I'm of the opinion that we really need to go for it and try and up that difficulty, within reason of course. It seems that since the Sydney disaster the strategy has been to hold back in that department which is a shame because the gymnastics is always less exciting.

You might be able to perform a lower valued routine beautifully but as we saw in Rotterdam with Bonora, unfortunately they never really gave much credit for stuck landings, and inevitably, the lower difficulty routines scored lower nine times out of ten. The judges are still afraid of throwing out high execution scores, especially if you're not Chinese, American, Russian or Romanian.

  40. I don't think the report was about camp, more about 2011 Worlds.

Angela was not mentioned perhaps because she is injured and may not be up for selection this year.
Nothing to do with how good she is.
I am surprised that Little got no mention.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was under the impression Angela would be ok for worlds this year, just maybe not for nationals.

Seems she was hoping to restart training earlier this month. Can anyone confirm?

    ReplyDelete
  42. You are most welcome Froggy, is not that hard....perhaps an age issue?

    he he he he

    ReplyDelete
  43. Angela was not at camp. Does anyone know anything about Laurens injury?

    ReplyDelete
  44. what has happened to Amelia McGrath lately? I've been catching up on the results from the VWHPC invite and she has seemingly deteriorated since this time last year. Lower start values and far lower e-scores. Is she injured, and if so, why not resting?

    ReplyDelete
  45. GA have updated the national squad list to add the new girls but they have spelt both their names wrong. Real classy stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  46. for anyone interested, on the Pre-Olympic youth cup list the Australian entries are:

    134. Eade Alexandra 1998 13 Australien
    135. Leydin Madelaine 1997 14 Australien
    136. Nedov Emma 1996 15 Australien

    ReplyDelete
  47. Is it a team of three.....or are they individual, are they only taking these three? Is Emma the only 96 junior we have... If yes where have all the others gone as I thought we had about 6 - 8 96 girls.

    ReplyDelete
  48. There's 7 girls born in'96 on the National squad.
Ebonie, Stella, Ashleigh, Rachael, Naomi, Kristina and Emma.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lauren got a board in the AIS Honour walk:

    http://www.gymnastics.org.au/default.asp?Page=20272

Nice pics of some of the girls

    ReplyDelete
  50. How come none of the 96 girls apart from Emma got a gig at the Pre-olympic cup? I would of thought the 96 girls would have been the priority at this stage

    ReplyDelete
  51. What is the next senior consignment? And when is it?

    ReplyDelete
  52. The girls had to verify for this comp. I assume the selction was based on results

    ReplyDelete
  53. Selection was based on results, obviously. There weren't THAT many juniors at camp, if these three are the three best then they should be allowed to go.

Obviously the other 96 girls weren't ready or Peggy would have sent them, I'm sure she's aware that they're Olympic age-eligible and, therefore, may need international experience.

    ReplyDelete
  54. 97 & 98 girls aren't Olympic eligible until 2016!Surely some other juniors would need the experience now and if there isn't any ready or not injured the reason should be addressed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. We have a bevy of seniors to choose from this year and will have many many for the Olympics next year. Maybe this is Peggy saying that she's satisfied with the crop she has for London?

Out of the 1996 juniors mentioned above only Ebonie and Naomi were at camp and missed out. What if they opted out because they aren't ready? Why should Maddi and Alex be denied the opportunity to represent their country NOW when they're A) the best (by placing highly at selection) and B) age-eligible for THIS competition?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Going by the camp pics and what we already know, out of the 1996 girls, Emma, Naomi and Stella were the only 3 who could have competed full verification, and we don't even know if they did. Most of the girls on the 1996 list didn't even attend camp.

Also, this is an Australian team assignment so just because Eade and Leydin are younger it shouldn't preclude them from earning their first Australian leo. It should be based on merit in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ebonie didn't do verification due to injury

    ReplyDelete
  58. Maybe at the moment the main focus should be on having a fit, healthy and competitive Worlds team!!!!!!! I think Peggy should be focusing on the 2012 for International experience. The 2016 will have plenty of opportunities in years to come..... and Worlds is only months away!!!!! and if we don't make it there this sport may be going on a big decline.

    ReplyDelete
  59. But 1996 girls can't go to worlds anyway! You're making no sense...

Gymnasts that apply to be selected at internationals, at which they're age-eligible should be selected on merit. The best gymnasts shouldn't be denied an Australian Tracksuit because someone who isn't as ready is a year older.

I'm sure Peggy actually knows what she is doing.. she has been choosing these teams for years

    ReplyDelete
  60. Agree, worlds should be the focus.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Do we know which seniors were selected to attend the Slovakia meet?

    ReplyDelete
  62. So all the juniors should sit on their hands until after worlds?

Where is the harm in the juniors competing o/s while the seniors stay home and train/upgrade for worlds? It gives Nedov experience so she can be more confident in aiming to represent at the Olympics and gives the other two gymnasts an assignment to look forward to seeing as their olympic aspirations can't be acheived until 2016?

Everyone always complains that our juniors aren't good enoough then two young ones step up and are do enough to beat out the 1996 girls to get an international assignment and people say that's not right... pff

    ReplyDelete
  63. I don't think any 96 girls did verification by the sounds of it apart from Nedov. Well done to the other two girls I hope they enjoy it. Do they only take three? Where does Leydin come from?

    ReplyDelete
  64. that could also be that the 1996 girls just aren't that good - on the whole, that cohort is weak.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Leydin is vwhpc - great presentation, 2 double saltos on floor, also good on beam.

  66. so seems Maryanne is out again. Withdrawn from trials for nationals.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anon 12:42
Very inappropriate, are you stating they are wasting their time.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeh 12.57, maybe they need the experience!

    ReplyDelete
  69. About time we saw girls traveling because of their results and not just because of their Olympic Cycle.
I agree Peggy has probably narrowed down her field for 2012. She already has a great crop of 2012 girls to choose from. There is plenty of room already in this group to allow for injuries.
If a girl is not going to make it why should she be given priorty just because she happens to be older.
Other countries are already getting their next cycle girls out there. We need to start doing the same thing if we want to remain competitive on the world stage. I agree that these next cycle girls should only be given the opportunity if they are seriously competitive with existing 2012 girls.

    ReplyDelete
  70. yeh, it is sort of getting to the stage now where you can see whether or not their programs will be developed enough to seriously contend. There is room for about 3 strong teams from the existing crop of seniors. I think Nedov is the only one with a legit shot, unless one of them comes up with a miraculous amanar or bar set over 6.0.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well including the 1996 girls listed above there are 35 contenders for London! 35!! And the team can only have 5 competitors right? If I was on the cusp I would be working hard on Bars and Vault...

    ReplyDelete
  72. If i was on the cusp I would be playing to my strengths more than anything. If I was Amelia McG, I would do away with bars and focus on super high valued routines on beam and floor. If I was Larrissa Miller, I would forget beam and work the other three, focusing on getting a huge routine on bars.

The bottom line is, there are a lot of good routines on offer, but not a lot of great ones. A specialist who can add 1.0 or more to the team total is not going to be turned down. If you can only offer good routines, chances are you can be replaced by someone else fairly easily given the depth we have.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I would say vault would need to be 5.8+, bars 5.8+, beam 5.8+ and floor 5.6+ to be considered great/as a specialist.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Bars should be 6.0+, Larissa was 15th at worlds last year with a 6.2 start!

And 5.8 for vault is a DTY and we already have Lauren and Emily doing those on all around. A 'specialist' for vault would have to have an Amanar and another half decent, prelims worthy apparatus.

Don't forget you only take 5 to the olympics.. less room for a 'specialist' who isn't freaking amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Does anyone know any details of the Comp in Slovakia? I can't see it on the International Calander. What sort of comp is it, Team, AA ect? Is it for Senior or Junior?

    ReplyDelete
  76. The FIG website says it is Senior and Junior. Interestingly, australia is not listed as an invited country. There is AUT but I'm pretty sure that is Austria. There is no website so that's pretty much all the info there is at the moment.
