Nationals 2011: WAG TF

Unfortunately, I didn't have a source on the ground tonight but GA elves were dutifully keeping us updated at Facebook.

A hearty congratulations to Victoria, who have taken top honours in the junior and senior team events.

Chloe Sims showed she's not to be counted out just yet, seemingly showing up her Queensland compatriate Larrissa Miller on bars (this could get awkward!) and rocking double fronts like they're singles.

Lauren Mitchell debuted her new floor routine on home soil, albeit with some opening night nerves. Wonder what the audience made of it...

I am particularly interested to see Miller's beam, as it gained a very positive review from the quickhitters. And I'm excited Mez Monckton seemed to do so well on bars!

Stay tuned for media morsels!

ETA: Houston, we have media morsels!

Lauren leads the senior AA standings after day one, with Georgia-Rose Brown in second and Chloe Sims nipping at their toes in third. Another Georgia is impressing the judges, with Queenslander Georgia Godwin leading junior standings, flanked by jetsetters Alex Eade and Emma Nedov.

Thanks to Gemeanie for vids from the venue. Chloe's floor is great.

IG has a wrap-up with scores and highlighted routines from Gemeanie's channel here.

  1. Not an amazing night of competition. Lots of falls. Brennan, not outstanding. Miller, not bad- doing AA which is nice to see.Lauren did well, floor was a bit off but an amazing beam.MAM and GRB not to bad, Chloe, not as amazing as I expected.Beam 1 fall, time penalty and very hesitant and slow.Bars and vault big steps on dismount.Fall on floor and just OK.Hope tomorrow night is more consistant. Good to see Brit out there and a surprise with Natalia on Beam, 2 falls I think and lots of wobbles.

  2. Anyone know the standings after day 1 in the Senior and Junior Comp.

  3. Results up from last night. Seems judging was fairly strict - what was described as 'good routine' or 'hit' in the quickhits was getting execution scores in the mid 7s. Brennan and Miller very disappointing and must be on the verge of losing their spots to Brown and Monckton. Mitchell and Monckton had 5.9s on bars, Chloe had 5.8. Miller had 5.3 only. Brennan is really a 1 event gymnast now.

  5. They are also on the event website. Lauren a long way ahead. she has a 5.9 on bars now. Chloe actually scored higher than I though, she is ahead of Mary-anne after Day 1. Georgia-Rose Brown in second. I don't se how Larrissa can keep her place in the team unless her bars significantly improve. She did have a fall though so maybe she lost potential connection bonuses there.

  6. Larissa impressed me last night doing AA.I think she has come a long way. She did have a fall at the begining of her bars , but finished nicely.Chloe did well but seems hesitant in areas which takes away that polished finish, doesn't look World Class yet.In time she may get there but there is still that worry of consistancy, which was aproblem last night.

  7. I certainly understand your concerns with chloes consistency. But she is still outscoring main world championship team contenders with falls. So even with falls her scores would still help and if she hits well then we are in a good position. She is also injured and is holding back on some difficulty so her scores should be significantly higher all things going to plan for world selections.

  8. Chloe would be a boost to the team. She has that X factor that the others seem to lack. Hopefully she can hit her routines tonight.

  9. i dont think Chloe is going to prioritise her routines for a win tonight.
I feel it's been all about her growing up and into her sport. I always felt for her when the powers that be tried to 'mold' her into behaving appropriately as a gymnast years ago. I loved her spirit and attitude way back then, and i love that she's decided to return.

She's the most exciting thing we've had in years - far outstrips Lauren in my eye for enjoyment factor.
Now that she's grown up and here for herself rather than for coaches/family/obligation; fingers crossed we're going finally see how fantastic she can be.
It's not about this year, Nationals is but a practise and Worlds would be a bonus ; but i'm guessing London is her unfinished business.
Who cares if she falls tonight or goes to slow - get the skills back first and then go for the stick. If there's anyone who's got the attitude to stick it to naysayers ( as in CWG AA) it's her.

  10. Sorry, but disagree. I don't find her very EXCITING to watch at all. Don't like the music and think the routine is Boring. Check out how Peggy turns her back and walks away when she falls on last tumble. It was more noticable last night.I also don't agree with how it keeps being mentioned that she is doing this for HER, sorry, but The Australian Team comes first. That is a big part of the sport and if you are not a team player, which I believe may have been part of the problem with her before, then that could be an issue
no matter how good you are.Peggy cut her off before.Yes, she may have matured but all I have heard is how it's all about Chloe.

  11. You're entitled to that opinion, Anon. I personally quite like the stylish choreo, especially the way she gets up from the floor on her toes, but as a whole it needs some work (combo pass in particular). The height in her leaps and jumps is great, though!

  12. Of course the team comes first but unless someone wants to do it for themselves then they are not going to be successful. If you ask any young gymnast what there dream and most will say to go to the Olympics so everyone is doing it for themselves to a certain extent. It disappoints me that Peggy turned her back when Chloe fell I hope she did the same when the other girls fell and just didn't do it to Chloe. I know there have been issues between Peggy and Chloe in the past but if Chloe's attitude has changed and she can add value to the team then I hope she gets a chance and Peggy doesn't hold the past against her.

  13. Chloe had great dramatic music and choreography but she didnt bring it
she needs to dazzle the audience like she used to
She had good tumbles, you could tell she wasnt going to land the double pike, it look like she didnt put any effort, although im sure she did
Lauren's vault is certainly great for her AA score!
did her 2 1/2 to punch front use to be a 1 1/2 to layout or 2 1/2?

  14. In my opinion, last night none of the girls seemed to have any fight in them. When a mistake was made, the body language looked like they were giving up. The only one who looked like they fought the whole time was Lauren. When she was low on landing, she fought to stand up rather than give up and put her hands down, like most of the others would. The USA nationals are coming up in a month, and I bet that those girls will be fighting the whole time to be the best.

  15. I cannot believes someone would call Chloe Simms boring. I watched her for the first time at Regionals and she was far, far from boring. She was exciting and you could here everyone in the audience enjoy her performance. She was also a great support for the younger QAS girls. If someone was upset she was there to give them support. Peggy really needs to have a sip of cement and get over it.

  16. sims' ways have not changed. i overheard her tell larrissa to "f-ing get out of my way!" on beam warm up, i also heard her tell sophie budack to "f-ing you got in my way for beam warm up". she has not changed, it seems she cannot conform to a team environment.

    ReplyDelete
  17. That is how she talks. She doesn't mean anything by it and the girls don't take her remarks seriously so I don't know why listeners in have to be concerned. Larissa is a big girl and Sophie can look after herself. She trains with them everyday and they can communicate however they want to. If she was talking to an outsider like that then I would understand your concern.

  18. Sims and Miller are friends. Not sure about Sophie. I hardly think that this one anecdote proves any dissent causing on Chloe's behalf.

  19. Lauren wins AA from Georgia-Rose and Mary-Anne. Georgia Godwin wins juniors from Alex Eade and Emma Nedov.

    ReplyDelete
  20. do you know the place getters in senior

    ReplyDelete
  21. I had it in my post. Lauren from Georgia-rose and Mary-Anne. I suppose I should have put senior in my post but I though it was pretty obvious when I listed the names.

    ReplyDelete
  22. sorry - i meant 4th, 5th and 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  23. sorry - i meant 4th, 5th and 6th. just wondering where Chloe came

    ReplyDelete
  24. No I don't sorry. The top three are on the events fb page. I am not sure of any other results. I would think Chloe would have come fourth or fifth just based on what I was reading about quickhits on fb.

  25. so how do you think they will manage petitions from all the injured girls?

Assuming Mitchell/Monckton/Brown/Sims/Brennan/Miller are locks, who misses out from this list? Only 6 can go forward...

    Little
    Chung
    Lorenzin
    Exum
    Wheeler
    McGrath
    Donald
    Simpson
    Joura
    Wurth
    Budack
    King Koi

    ReplyDelete
  26. This will be interesting. Given her experience Emily will get to go forward unless her injury is bad and she can' t compete at worlds. I am not sure about the others it would have to depend on the severity of the injuries and what apparatus specialists are needed. Are the top 6 at nationals locks?

    ReplyDelete
  27. no, but I find it hard to see that any of the nationals top 6 would be excluded based on their histories and the fact they actually competed. Wouldn't it be weird if it was say 75% petitioners and 25% who actually competed?

I think Little Donald Wheeler and Lorenzin should absolutely make it, then it gets hard for the last 2 spots.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I reckon definitely Simpson will make the 12.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It should be

    Little
    Chung
    Simpson
    Lorenzin
    Wheeler
    Donald

with McGrath, Joura and Wurth as reserves.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What's happened to Georgia bonora?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Georgia B had ankle surgery earlier this year. I think she is still hoping to compete in London.
Anon your sounds about right. Assuming if course all the girls are fit to trial which is no guaruntee.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Interesting Anon 7:28 about how Chloe talks to the other girls with such language. I think that is terrible. No one should talk like that out on the floor ,joking or not.Very unprofessional.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Unlikely Georgia W will make the team, she has got a stress fracture in her arm from what I heard!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Donald won't bother petitioning - she is out for the whole year with her injury.

Exum, Joura and Wurth I can't see making it and I reckon Lorenzin will have to be pretty off the charts amazing to be successful because she so rarely is able to compete and is yet again missing these nationals - will they want to take a chance on someone so untested and so constantly injured? If I were Peggy I wouldn't. She'd have to absolutely blow me away.

Little definitely will unless her injury is way too bad, as has been said. I'm not sure about Chung - I think Simpson has a bit of a better chance than Chung. I'd like to see McGrath included but I'm not sure of her chances either.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Donald is NOT out for the whole year.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well she said herself she was out for worlds. Perhaps she feels like her year is blown because of that

    ReplyDelete
  37. Are you talking about her Twitter posts? Or did you actually hear her say it? She is not 'out' for worlds, as in, has no chance of trialling, but rather on Twitter alluded to the fact that missing nationals meant she felt her chances were severely lowered.
