BGTV FTW!

Not a lot of nice news is coming from our friends in the UK at the moment (though I urge you to Google or twitter-search "Operation Cup of Tea"). Here is something nice.

I got an email in the last couple of days from Gareth Finchett*, the Production Manager of BGtv, that excellent online resource put out by British Gymnastics. They're going bigger and better in the lead-up to 2012 so here are some new developments any fellow fans might be interested in:

* All 2011 players now have the 'blog this' button enabled so everyone can get the video code.
* We have started to live stream all our main BG events and the intention is to make these available via the embed code feature. Where possible we will no longer be geo blocking this content (the Women's British [championships] will not be geo blocked in the future)
* All BGtv VOD content is now available on iOS and smartphone devices
* We release weekly coaching tips from our top coaches
* During our live events we have interactions through Facebook and twitter including shoutouts / questions for gymnasts.
And they welcome any feedback on the service at their website.

So how's about that, eh? EH!?

Who's for a tea and a biscuit?

*I bet he lives in Toad Hall or with the Wombles or something. SHO CUUUUUUUUTE.

  1. Been away for a while but have people discusses Georgia Wheeler having a 'to come' profile on the VWHPC website?? http://www.vwhpc.org/Profiles.htm

Does this mean she's moved there or its just that she's a VIS scholarship holder?

  2. any camp news - its finished now hasn't it????

  3. Unfortunately Chloe will not be on the Worlds team. She has posted on her official Facebook that she has to have a shoulder reconstruction this week that will leave her out of action for the rest of the season. Good luck Chloe...all the best for your surgery & recovery.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Guessing the fact that two Aussies now on staff at BG have pushed some of these changes?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Thats a shame about Chloe, such a short come back. How did everyone else fair at camp? Who was there?
I suppose that will create another spot on the GA/ AIS squad for someone else.Wonder when they will announce contenders for trial 2 in September.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Apparently there were only like 8 seniors there, the rest are injured and were therefore not allowed to attend. Apparently Brennan, Monckton, Little and Mitchell are looking like strongest contenders. Miller, Brown need more work.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Absolutely tragic news about Chloe. I'm praying for some quick recoveries from the injured girls as well as Chloe of course. Olympics qualification looking very shaky now. Georgia Simpson would be a very handy team member at this stage. Who else has world class start values on anything? Apart from the 4 locks that is.

    ReplyDelete
  8. zoe does, but nobody seems to know whether or not she is seriously injured or will be ok for camp.

    ReplyDelete
  9. zoe has a long term elbow issue, so is out for the rest of the year, but continues to train and is looking forward to next year

    ReplyDelete
  10. Zoe is not out for the rest of the year. Your facts are wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Zoe would be EXTREMELY useful to the team for VT and FX.

If she is healthy, we could have:

VT: Zoe, Lauren, Emily/Britt, MAM/GRB, Ashleigh

UB: Lauren, MAM, GRB, ...then it gets tricky. Not sure where Emily or Zoe are on this event, and Britt struggled a bit with consistency at Nationals. Ashleigh's routine is too simple. Larrissa's would be helpful, but there are obvious consistency issues there as well. She may make the team for this apparatus alone -- although she is potentially useful on FX too.

BB: Lauren, Ashleigh, MAM, Emily ? Georgia S, GRB. Consistency issues at nationals for Britt and Larrissa, but Britt's routine may do okay if she hits.

FX: Lauren, Ashleigh, MAM, GRB, Zoe, Emily, Britt...almost all our team have the potential to compete here.

I think it will come down to bars, and to who is healthy. What a shame Chloe is out.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hmmm, if Georgia S and Zoe both recover in time, they could complement each other VERY nicely -- Simpson for UB and BB, Zoe for VT and FX.

That leaves four AA spots. I would guess Lauren, MAM, GRB and Emily. Ashleigh's bars might be her downfall, unfortunately, because her experience would be fabulous for the team.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Zoe also has a good enough BB - 5.6 D score IIRC. I agree that she would be extremely useful and more than anyone else who is injured I am hoping she can trial.

    Is Wheeler definitively ruled out?

    ReplyDelete
  14. yeh, huge problem is that besides lauren, zoe and emily nobody can do a decent vault. Without Zoe, to count 2 yurchenko fulls in the team total is going to be disastrous. MAM's and Brown's yurchenko fulls are really not good either, so they wont score high on execution.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Last zoe told me was she would be okay to trial for worlds, her resting this year was all for that.
But i agree, she would be great on the team.
MAM has pretty much solified her spot.
I really hope Britt and Emily are good to go, they are great, especially Britt when she is confident, she seemed uncertain and states and nationals.
Will be very exciting who goes in september!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Are any of these comments made by a coach who attended the camp? There seems to be a lot of people with knowledge regarding the gymnasts skills & performance including the injured gymnasts.
As too who will make worlds who knows it appears to be a guessing game according to opinions posted here
It will be interesting to see who trials next month. It does seem that prior trials and camps have no or little bearing on who will be chosen. I think everything is riding on the final trial. Good luck to all.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It absolutely is a guessing game at the moment, as so much will depend on how well the injured athletes recover and can contribute.

Zoe, Emily and Georgia S would all have genuine chances if they recover in time.

Worth noting is that Britt has a quite dynamic Yurchenko 1.5.

Does anyone know if Angela Donald is still a possibility?

    I think a team of:
VT: Lauren, Emily, Zoe, GRB, MAM
UB: Lauren, GRB, Georgia S, MAM, Emily
BB: Lauren, Georgia S, MAM, Emily, and either Zoe or GRB (GRB can add the double tuck dismount she used at Vics)
FX: Lauren, Emily, Zoe, MAM, and either GRB or Georgia Simpson

That would be quite a nice team! There would also be a number of back-up options for each apparatus.

I love Ashleigh, but there is no way she will be competing on bars for the team, which means everyone has to!

    ReplyDelete
  18. You are right about Ash's bars.

Both she and Peggy are fond of calling her routine a 'fitness exercise'

I don't believe they have ever intended calling it an international routine.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Haha, "fitness exercise" -- I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. There are more gymnasts than Zoe who can make the team. I dont come on here often and when I do it always seems to be about Zoe. I am sure she is good but so are others. Peggy will pick the team and I am sure on her head she already has. Do the injured girls get an opportunity by petitioning as I thought they had to be at camp for this verification.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The team needs to be top 8 to secure a spot to the Olympics and I think if we're counting a Y-full on vault and some of the low UB DVs we won't make that. Chloe could have filled those positions but now I'm not sure who will be there. I hope Emily is better soon, we need her vault.

I think the team should be the same as last year with MAM in for Georgia Wheeler and someone replacing G.Bonora who is injured... so Lauren, Ash, MAM, Larissa, Emily and someone.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Larissa is too big a risk and shouldn't be taken. I think GRB would be a better option. I think she will be a real player next year, so we should be giving her as much international experience as possible. It is really hard to tell at the moment since I think a lot is going to depend on whether or not Georgia S, Zoe and Angela Donald are fit. We do have quite a bit of depth in comparison to years past, so I'd say the only lock at this stage is Lauren. Interesting times ahead!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I would prefer Larissa over GRB.GRB
was not consistent in Japan or at Nationals on bars and I think Larissa's International experience is important. Worlds is a big comp and we dont need people who can crumble under pressure, I dont feel GRB is ready for such a big comp yet.I would rather see Zoe in the team than Emily, apart from vault,Emily is very ordinary.Has she been doing DTY since her injury? If she can only offer a full, would rather see Zoe in the team or Britt or Georgia Simpson on Beam and bars.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't think this worlds should be about experience... it should be about avoiding the playoff for 9-12 positions at the Olympics and therefore all about pushing for top 8. With Russia, USA, China, Romania, GBR, Japan, Italy, France all in contention and then maybe Spain as well we need to send the best team not a team for experience.
If not Emily someone who can DTY on vault and be solid as a rock. That is the role Emily plays. She provides that consistancy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. We need people who have had good International experience and who know what to expect at such a big and important comp. To get through to the top 8 we need a team that is consistant. That does not mean it has to be the ones that have the hardest skills, No good if they
cant stay on the apparatus, that is where maturity and experience comes into play.If the girls who were in the 2010 team are fit and have consistant routines then they should be selected over girls who have not been to a Worlds with this comp being so important. If Emily is training DTY then great, but still dont think she offers much else.

    ReplyDelete
  26. A lot of you need to go back to school and learn how to spell. Or if you are already there, focus a bit harder. Probably a good idea to widen your horizons beyond banal speculation about gymnastics teams too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Just because someone is not as proficient at spelling as you think you are,it does not mean they are not entitled to an opinion. If you feel that the conversation is uninteresting then don't participate.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i think they should drop Mitchell for this year's worlds and save her for the olympics; give other girls a chance to get a spot on the team and some experience.

    ReplyDelete
  29. We need to get to the Olympics and if we don't send the best then there will be NO Olympics. I actually think we are in a sorry state at the moment. We had such a large bucket of seniors at the beginning of the year.......what has happened. So many injuries and other girls have been left off the radar and not pushed forward. Then Peggy starts putting young ones on the Olympic squad. We need to be focusing on the 2012 girls or there won't be a 2012 at then the sport is in serious problems as funds will be slashed.
Also remember the 2012 girls will be around for 2016 so back them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This site is hilarious, its clear that a lot of people are blowing their own horns for recognition. at the end of the day it ultimately up to Peggy who goes to worlds.

    ReplyDelete

    How true

    ReplyDelete
  32. Who, other than Peggy, should be selecting the World's team? Anybody else out there who spends more time with all the gymnasts and thier coaches? Anybody else who has more detailed knowledge of the gymnasts's training habits and routine content? Anybody else out there with more experience than Peggy? Open for suggestions.......

    ReplyDelete
  33. Here, here, anon:4.21. I think anon:4.06 needs to lighten up! Wats rong with a few spellin mistakes hear and thier.Sounds a bit snubby, oop's snobby to me.So glad you put a "B" in front of that word, could have been a bit rude or was it a typo!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Does anyone know who was at camp and may know who may put in a petition for trial 2? If there was about 8 seniors at camp will they all be invited back for trial 2 and would that leave 4 positions open for injured gymnasts to petition? Do we have 12 eligable Seniors able to trial? It's a worry!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Does anyone remember the posdium training video from 2010 Worlds that has footage of Georgia Simpson? I can't find it -- I seem to remember it was labelled something odd on YouTube.

If anyone has a link or could help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anon 4.21 their opinions are as poorly constructed and haphazard as their spelling.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Given the amount of time out of school our gymnasts have, then it is no surprise that as adults their spelling is of concern. Peggy has a say in the worlds team, but so do a handful of others. Eg Jill, helen etc... On occasions I believe Peggy has ended up with needing to compromise with other selectors on who will make the team.
I do urge those who play a significant role in the development of our IDP 10 and Jnr girls to recognize our countries current situation and work on significantly increasing the difficulty of the girls vaults! Such an under valued / trained apparatus in this country amongst elite girls.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I hear georgia godwin will compete a yurchenko double at japan juniors

    ReplyDelete
  39. Experience counts for nothing if you are still unable to compete consistently. That is why I think Larissa has no business being on this team. When was the last time she actually delivered for the team? Although the priority has to be qualifying to the Olympics, we also need to ensure that we as many girls as possible that are in true contention for 2012 are given a chance to gain experience at big comps. There would be nothing worse than having someone, like GRB or Georgia S, with the start values to be on the Olympic team, but without enough international experience to be confident. It is a balancing act. Each girl should be going into these selections with a clean slate. What they have done in the past should not count. We need to send our strongest team to Tokyo, and if that means leaving behind some of the more experienced girls, then so be it. If they aren't consistent, they don't deserve to be on the team. We can't afford to throw away scores because someone is unable to stay on the apparatus.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Difficult time for Peggy, injuries are such a pain!!!!
But this clearly shows don't rely on a few as they may not be able to compete when needed. Keep your options open coaches and focus on all and maybe in the future we will be guessing who is on the team as there are too many to choose from and not relying on injured ones.
GA need to look at what is happening and start looking for solutions for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Re Georgia Godwin: she did attempt a Yurchenko double at nationals, didn't she? So it must be close to or at competition readiness.

Jazminne Cassis, Alex Eade, and Emma Nedov are all shining AA hopes for the future, with pretty good difficulty levels already on three apparatus.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jasmine, Alex and Emma are all lovely gymnasts but again their vaults are not strong. Georgia Dodwin is only Jnr with strong vaults, so not really 'good' all rounders'.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think Larrissa has little chance as well. She once was great on bars but now seems to only be going down. Sure, she has loads of great experience, but like someone else said, if she's not able to pull out that consistency when it's needed for the team, then she is no use for us.

I too don't see why people continually harp on about Zoe. She has yet to prove herself - barely competing at all in god knows how many years. As if Peggy will ever take a chance on someone so untested and so inepxerienced and injury prone. It's just not going to happen.

Greeley and Budack have little chance. I don't know what you're thinking calling Greeley's vault dynamic. I can't see it myself.

Brennan will make the team for the same reason she always does - she's reliable, experienced, consistent and solid. She can hold it together. She can deliver good enough scores when it coutns. Sure it's not spectacular, but it's good. She is a good team leader. We cannot take a bunch of total newbies scared out of their wits to Tokyo. Then we really will never make it to London.

Little will also make it because of her consistency. You know Peggy has her faves and Emily is one of them. I personally think she is boring to watch but she delievers and is solid. I don't know the status of her injury, but I have no doubt she'll probably be right for September and beyond.

I hear Georgia Bonora has petitioned to Worlds Trials? If so she is also a clear contender. Peggy loves her experience.

I think if any newbie is to get a shot at a worlds spot this year it should be Georgia Rose Brown. She finished so well AA at Nationals, and is lovely to watch and seems to just get better with every year that passes.

I think the team will be:

    Little
    Mitchell
    Monckton
    Brennan

and then either Simpson, Bonora, Wheeler, Miller or Brown. I feel like Miller may've done her dash, and I am not sure of the status of Wheeler's injury, and too if Peggy trusts her and her inconsistency at such an important meet like Worlds. They only took her to Delhi because Monckton was injured and even then it was for only a routine or two and they didn't blow anyone away.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Agreed. Peggy is going to want the safest team out there. One that can deliver and ensure our spot in London.

    ReplyDelete
  45. anon @ 2.29- Monkcton is in the same boat as Lorenzin in terms of injuries/experience essentially. If Lorenzin can offer a DTY - 8 tenths higher than a FTY for a single skill - she should definitely be there. It could make all the difference. By the same token - if no DTY, I don't think she has any chance of making it. It all hinges on that.

People harp on about her because she is a fantastic three eventer who if healthy is good enough to be on the team. Simple as that.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hilarious! Please the only people that harp on here about Zoe are her family!
Does she even have this DTY vault consistantly?
Same as Georgia G, Just because she attempted it at Nationals does that mean that she has it or is any closer to having it then say Jasmin, Alex or Emma who's coaches may not have allowed them to attempt it in comp yet?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Georgia Godwin did not attempt to do a DTY at nationals. She got lost trying to do a full!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Georgia Godwin did not attempt to do a DTY at nationals. She got lost trying to do a full!

  49. To anon 8.43
It was a Gymnastique video of Ashleigh Brennon on beam at
    Podium training.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 11.56am most gymnasts families no longer post on this board because comments about the athletes status are often inaccurate and injuries to an athlete are nobodies business. But I'll pass on your message to zoe's mum - it'll give her a laugh!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Dear anon 8:43 If You have a look on GWA site at the Nationals Montages and look at the WAIS Coaching award montage there are some brief snips of Georgia S. on Beam, Bars and floor along with Nikki, Emily and Lauren.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thank you to those who have helped me out with video links -- much appreciated!

BTW, I saw Zoe compete at the VWHPC Open Day, and her vault and floor were pretty great. She fully deserves the hype. I hope she gets a chance to show everyone what I was able to see that day.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Exactly, the girl's gym is absolutely gorgeous. She has artistry, beautiful toe point, precision, great dynamics. What more could you want?

I would much rather watch this incredibly polished routine she presented at Gymnix than sloppy ones from her counterparts with more difficulty.

    ReplyDelete
  54. were all juniors at the camp or just seniors? I think as a country we need to offer more competitons for experience for all elite gymnasts. Maybe annual NZ friendlies, Wet n Wild and border challenges between states for the elite girls. They need more comp experience when you look at other countries we are way behind in this area. Also, I agree about our vaults needing to be more emphasized. I am sure I saw some IDP 8 girls vaulting without a Yurchenko? Why bother having a National Direction if people do not take it?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anon 10:37, I watched the link of Zoe at Gymmix and she only used the high bar?! How does that get scored, it is an uneven bar competition, aren't the girls supposed to use both?!?

    ReplyDelete
  56. To the question about vault and national direction - some girls are never going to be competitive on vault but may have plenty to offer on the other 3 apparatus so in those cases it makes sense to get through the compulsary levels however they can and focus on adding difficulty where their strengths lie. We would miss out on some beautiful bar and beam workers if this was not allowed. It is a national direction not a requirement. For example, I doubt Olivia Vivian (and her coaches) ever expected her to compete vault for Australia but her bars certainly came in handy in 2008.

    ReplyDelete
  57. From memory Zoe was carrying a slight injury and that was why she didn't do full bars

    ReplyDelete
  58. Anon 12:45, thanks for your response, that seems to make a lot of sense. Yet it is a shame we always seem to be lacking on the vault in terms of high start values so if someone like EL is injured we are competitively and consistently weak on that apparatus. Hopefully, with so many younger girls coming up through the ranks, this will cease to be a problem, particularly if the national direction awards those with higher VT start values.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have been doing calcs and if Bonora legitimately has a shot as Peggy told IG and Lorenzin is indeed saving herself for trial, this would be an awesome team...

    Mitchell
    Little
    Bonora
    Lorenzin
    Miller
    Monckton

    VT
2 decent 5.0 vaults and possibly 3 DTYs. Miller or Monckton sit out.

    UB
Lorenzin sits out. Solid start routines from Emily and Bonora. Up the ante with 5.9s from Monckton and Mitchell then finish with a strong routine from Miller,

    BB
Good solid start from Emily. Following on with good clean routines from Lorenzin and Monckton - both have DVs over 5.5. Finish off with A classic solid Bonora routine up around 6.0DV and then pack a punch with Mitchell's super set.

    FX
Again a good start from Emily. Follow on with Lorenzin and Miller, and then finish up with Mary-Anne's higher DV set and then Mitchell to cap off a great comp.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That is a great team you said!
Although I would swap Miller with Brown
The reaults from the trial are going to be very exciting!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. How many trials do the girls have? And was this was the first, yes?

    ReplyDelete
  62. lorenzin is out with elbow issues, bonora is still a big question, as she is just able to run now, has not begun to tumble yet.

    ReplyDelete
