*balloons and party horns*
Hullo again, friends! 'Tis 2012, and what a year it is shaping up to be!
The big BIG event to kick off the year is the London Olympic Test Event at the 02 Arena.
Fulltwist has a comprehensive post featuring the competition details here. Best of luck to our Aussie gymnasts in all disciplines attending the event!
Update: Follow the event's proceedings at Twitter with the hashtag #FIGTest12
Fingers crossed that either Thomas or Sam can qualify for an individual place ;)
ReplyDeleteGood Luck to all the gymnasts competing at the Test Event in London. Go get em girls !!!!!
ReplyDeleteGuys too....
See that VWHPC has announced AIS Olympic squad
ReplyDeleteMembers: Brennan, MAM, Lorenzin,Wheeler,Brown,Eade and Leydin. Wonder who the others are from the other states? Wonder if Sims got through this time!
Sims is still coming back from injury.
ReplyDeleteAs is Lorenzin, and Wheeler.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your point?
Greely seems to have been left out :(
ReplyDeleteI know :( Poor Britt has worked her whole life for this
ReplyDeleteSuch a tough sport
Must be heart breaking after being such a contender as a junior to be thwarted by injury at the business end so to speak. I hope that are current shining junior stars don't go the same way. Having said all that I have no personal knowledge of Britt's situation and am assuming injury is the issue. Maybe she still has time to make the squad in time - it is reviewed whenever it needs to be from what we have seen over the last few years.
ReplyDeletewho do you guys think still has a realistic shot to make the olympic team?
ReplyDeleteI mean, they have till May to make the top 12....
Presuming the worlds team from last year will make it...
Monckton
Mitchell
Miller
Little
Brown
Brennan
Who will the other 6 be? I think the most likely are
Wheeler
Simpson
Lorenzin
Chung
Donald
Bonora
But then there is also
Sims
Wurth
Joura
McGrath
Who have been injured but are very competitive when healthy...
I think Brennan and Miller can be knocked out but two of the others
ReplyDeletemy guess is simpson, lorenzin or chung
that depends on sims situation
and the younger seniors
Can't see Sims, Chung (although she may make alternate maaayyybbbeeee) or Lorenzin making it.
ReplyDeleteMcGrath will be a serious contender in the years after the Olympics I reckon. Simpson could make alternate to the Olympic team as well maybe.
Miller will have to fight for her spot on the Olympic team I think, but her bars are invaluable and are her ticket and I have no doubt she's working hard to get them Olympic ready so that no one can deny her that spot on the team.
Little and Brennan will make it for reliability. I can see the team being Little, Brennan, Mitchell, Monckton and Miller/Simpson/Brown. I would be happy with any combo of that team personally.
Anon at 9;10 it sounds like you have had detailed discussions with Peggy and the gymnast's personal coaches, observed every session of the recent training camp, attended last years Nationals, National Clubs together with the Tokyo World Championships to arrive at your views.
ReplyDeletedon't forget Angela
ReplyDeleteOMG 9:59 seriously, nobody is professing to know for sure! It is called healthy speculation. Shut your trap or provide your own opinion instead of bagging others. The suggestions of 9:10 are hardly unexpected either.
ReplyDeleteWho do you suppose will make it?
Lorenzin's only possible ticket is the DTY she showed at VWHPC open day back in March, but having had an injured elbow it is obviously doubtful now to be performance ready. She could be a three eventer on the team if she gets the DTY but is not usable on bars.
Sims has a great shot IF she can get back to where she was last nationals by the time the O rolls around. She would be a great choice for the 3rd AAer after Emily and Lauren, or maybe Emily could do VT complemented by a specialist and Sims could do AA instead.
Angela might be ok at BB/FX, but is far too weak on VT/UB to be used there.
I think Monckton is really not up to scratch lately and could be threatened by Lorenzin/Sims/Brennan/Donald. Monckton is too weak on vault and her bars have scored very poorly internationally, meaning she is not a suitable AAer. Beam is the only place she is really needed, but Angela and Ashleigh are just as good.
Miller could make it as a complement to Emily - Miller does UB/FX, emily does VT/BB. The team is probably going to be comprised of three AAers and 2 complementary specialists, or 2 AAers and three complementary specialists if Peggy is game to take the risk of not qualifying 2 girls to the AA.
The only threat to the team suggested in my opinion is:
Mitchell AA
Miller UB FX
Sims AA
Lorenzin VT BB FX
Little VT UB BB
Well the last video of Lorenzin had her doing a double layout off bars, although it didnt have a low bar connection
ReplyDeleteBut I'm sure that would put pressure on her elbow landing in handstand
Can Simpson and Little qualify individually from the test event?
Lorenzin has scarcely any international name the way Brennan does. I can't see her getting it over Brennan or anyone else for that matter.
ReplyDeleteAgain though, just my opinion. Zoe would have to blow everyone away in 2012 to have a hope - she has unfortunately never been able to really get started and it will not help her at all trying to make an Olympic team.
Simpson and Little can't qualify as individuals because Australia has already qualified a team. The mag gymnasts can because no team going to the Olympics. An article on the GA website says they are using it for preparation. I hope this means they see Georgia S as a serious contender - seems a waste sending her to the test event in the Olympic venue and then not go later in the year.
ReplyDeleteYes it has been a long road for Zoe with all the injuries but she must be progressing given that she has benn put back on the Olympic squad. We will just have to wait until all the trials start to get an indication of what everyone's D scores will be looking like.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be very unlikely for Lorenzin to make the Olympic team. Also the Olympic squad isn't for 2012 hopeful only as it has Juniors, so they may be looking beyond 2012 for some of these seniors.
ReplyDeletePacific rim includes juniors
