Wide World of Sports

Just a reminder that it's now 10am in Melbourne, and at some point duing the next hour Wide World of Sports on Channel 9 will be doing a feature on our male and female gymnasts training in Canberra.

The episode opening featured a teaser - we saw Josh vaulting, Georgia Rose leaping, and they said they will catch up with Lauren.

So stay tuned!

***********

Tim Sheridan is in Canberra.

Peggy says there are 20 seniors confirmed for nationals which will be whittled to 10-12 for the Olympic training squad.

Girls in pink and black training leos. General training footage, nothing too eye-opening.

We see Lauren with a shoulder tape on.

Maryanne interviewed briefly (they flashed up a photo of her bad ankle) and showed her training a tkatchev to pak on bars.

Ash and GRB name-checked (lovely sissone on floor from Georgia)

Larrissa shown training floor, Em briefly on bars. "When I'm performing... I try not to let the nerves get to me. I do what I can do."

Josh and Tom shown training, Josh :"Were good mates... we empathise with eachother and motivate eachother."

It was a very quick piece with extremely short soundbites from a few of the gymnasts; they showed footage of Lauren's 2010 world floor routine and the men's team on the Delhi 2010 gold medal podium.

ETA: The WWOS website has put up video of the feature.

We already know that Hingston, Boucher and Sanders will not trial.

  2. My pick is to cross out the following.....
    Budack
    Joura
    King Koi
    Clarke
    Wurth
    Lorenzin
    Wheeler
    McGrath
    Lowrey
    Savvidou
    Nedov
    James
    Kittl
    Boyd
    Kay
    Sims

    This should leave
    Mitchell
    Simpson
    Little
    Chung
    Bonora
    Brown
    Monckton
    Brennan
    Donald at camp and then

    Mitchell
    Little
    Miller
    Monckton
Brown for the team with Brennan as reserve

    Miller

  3. We know that tons of those girls intend to trial though. Obviously only 6 of them are out of the running at this stage so it's silly to rule so many out.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I am fairly certain that come hell or high water, Brennan will make the team, especially if we see her tsuk 1.5. Monckton offers little, she has been injured again lately, bars don't score well internationally, vault is one of the weakest yurchenko fulls, and floor scored in the 12s at Japan Cup and is iffy in general considering her ankle (note worlds 2011). The only proven event for her is beam.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Someone on Couch gymnast face book mentions that Lauren said that she won't be doing AA in London due to her shoulder, I didn't see the clip, so don't know.
If others upgrade their vault, like Chung DTY and Simpson 1.5 that would threaten AB on the team surely as both have good bars reasonable floor and beam.

  6. How awesome if 4 girls from WAIS made the team!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ash is consistent on three apparatus but with Lauren not competing bars, we need four bar works...and Ash sure isn't one of them

    ReplyDelete
  8. How did Monckton's ankles feature at worlds in 2011?
Wasn't it Mitchell with ankle issues at worlds?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Monckton competed a good floor routine with a 5.6 start value at Vics 2011 (the highest DV in the country after Lauren) but then by worlds her ankles were so bad she didn't compete floor at all. In other worlds, her health is not reliable enough for her to get on the team on the basis of her floor routine.

  10. I certainly wouldn't rule Simms out yet. Her bars is improving well and she is starting to hit some form after coming back from surgery. I really hope she can pull it together in time. She would give the team the oooomph they desperately need.

    ReplyDelete
  11. There is a high chance that the 4 WAIS girls could make the team
I don't like this talk that Lauren has no chance of doing bars by London
Have faith Lauren we believe in you!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Peggy said she would whittle it down to 10 - 12 for selection camp and i'm thinking that 12 would be
    Mitchell
    Simpson
    Little
    Chung
    Joura
    Miller
    Donald
    Brown
    Monckton
    Brennan
    Lorenzin
    Wheeler

  13. Anonymous March 4, 2012 6:35 PM you sadly have it all wrong.

Monckton was ready and able to perform floor in Tokyo, without any ankle issues.

She was withdrawn from floor due to a cold.

  14. I think that all four WAIS girls will make the team. Nicki has a DTY the team really needs three good vault scores. Not sure who will be the 5th team member possibly Ash

    ReplyDelete
  15. 2008 WAIS got 3 of 4 on the team against popular opinion. The 4th was jade Martin and she was injured and barely able to trial so you could say they got 3 of 3. I wouldn't be surprised if they did it again. They seem to have a very good program for getting people ready at the right time. I'm not sure the other programs have this focus. It's ALL about the Olympics at WAIS.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It will only be Ash if Lauren can compete bars. Larrissa could make the team with four WAIS girls to compete UB/FX although probably in only in the scenario that Lauren cannot compete bars. A lot can happen between now and the Olympics. We have yet to see Nikki compete her DTY and although good vault scores are needed we cannot forget the other apparatus' as well.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If Nikki has a DTY by FAR the best team will be Brennan, Chung, Mitchell, Little, Miller. Brennan and Chung complement each other perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You are right about 2008. WAIS had four girls, however J ade was withdrawn prior to Olympic trials due to injury.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sunday Telegraph confirmed that Rizzo has retired (though most probably figured this). Page 76.

    ReplyDelete
  20. But Chung has almost no big international comp experience. No worlds, no Scam, just a few little events. I'm not saying that's worthless but there are a lot of other gymnasts out there who have much more of a name for themselves and are known by the international judges a lot better than Chung. I think Peggy choosing Simpson for Scam was a very good thing for her - puts her in the good books and shows that she's on Peggy's radar.
Agreed Monckton is probably too chronically injured to make the team which is a shame cos she wants it more than anyone.
Lorenzin too has no hope and I'm iffy about Miller after her meltdown in Canberra a month or two ago. Still, I would like to see her on the team, especially over someone like Sims, or even Little.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Miller over Little?? Okay then

    ReplyDelete
  22. I can't see how Miller would get in over Little, however they could easily both in the team as they are completely different gymnast, Little the solid all rounder with the DTY and Larrissa the UB/FX specialist. Larrissa does seem to get better as the year goes on.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Larissa's meltdown?? Care to elaborate?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ok seeing Georgia's bars on youtube, she is doing stalder full+shap+bail+stalder shoot.

I have come up with the perfect codewhoring routine for her adding 1 skill and her D dismount before the games

stalder full+ shap+ free hip full + bail + stalder shoot
    toe full + tkatchev
    D dismount

The routine at American cup was worth 5.6, this is worth 6.4.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Agreed. Both would work but not Larissa instead of Emily. Emily will possibly be our only AA so I can't see a 5 person team without her in it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 8:41PM
good use of the code. you should send that to wais coaches. uprise free hip hard though

    ReplyDelete
  27. trial one workorder for vic is out if anyone is interested

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes please to the workorder.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think the 10-12 will be:
    Mitchell
    Simpson
    Little
    Chung
    Sims
    Miller
    Bonora
    Brown
    Monckton
    Brennan
    Lorenzin
    Wheeler

And the team will go one of two ways with or without Brennan and it all comes down to Mitchell doing bars. IF she can't do nars AUS can't take Brennan because you NEED four competitors on bars (to be respectable). Little and Mitchell are in 100% everyone else is dependant on Lauren's bars and I think its between Simpson, Brennan, Monckton, Brown and Miller.

If they were thinking Chung for London they would have put her into Pac Rims for some experience and Simpson in SCAM but they chose Simpson for both...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't think Lorenzin will be in the 10-12 group. But in this sport we are always surprised!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. There was a trial for PAC rim and it is a 3 person team. I think the team was selected from the trial where GS did very well. SCAM is an AA comp - maybe GS was the highest AA at camp? I remember reading that she won day 2. From the assignments the top performers at camp must have been Little, Mitchell, GS and GRB. Looks like top 3 at camp were Lauren, Emily and GS - based on the assignments. Nikki is well and truly in the mix with the others based on being in the B team at Gymnix.

  32. Guys, discussion is great but please be mindful of how your comments can be interpreted.

I have already been contacted by a few people close to the national squad who are concerned at some of the language being used to analyse the performances of their friends, nieces and daughters (and please don't retort that "analysing them is the very nature of this sport").

    ReplyDelete
  33. Mez could you perhaps post an example of what comments here are not acceptable? I am a little confused as it all seems fairly reasonable to me.

    ReplyDelete
  34. a video of Chloe Sims' upgrades on bars via her public facebook

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=3162752640243

    ReplyDelete
  35. As much as I think the photo of Ash Brennan leaping with the flag is beautifully done I find the article that goes with it presumptuous and misleading . It makes it sound to the general public that she has already been selected for London.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I guess go easy bandying about terms like "meltdown", and comments like "Monckton is probably too chronically injured to make the team...".

It's only March, not May. I think what we saw with the groups in France and Germany showed promise and are a stepping stone to bigger and better performances. I can't wait for Pacific Rim, regardless of the USA being almost guaranteed to dominate. I'm not being complacent, I'm not being naive, I just don't believe in counting chickens before they're hatched.

  38. Pre Cup interview by Gymnastike with Georgia Simpson
Upgrades since Test Event ( approx 6 weeks ago)
Floor - full in, front salto through to double tuck
    Vault- Yurchencko Full
Beam- Yang Bo , side aerial
    Bars- stalder to connection shap

.......I 'm really just here for the big experience.

And what an experience she has had!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anon, March 5th 8:41pm

    'codewhoring' lol

    Great suggestion too!

    ReplyDelete
  40. i cant see Chloe's vid...can anyone please list the skills she is doing?

    ReplyDelete
  41. The video is only of part of her high bar. It goes...
    long kip - straddle cast
    Stalder to H/S
    Stalder half (loose)
Clear pike full (VERY late turn)

    So we have
    A+A+C+C+E

    ReplyDelete
  42. so adding in that combo to her old routine Chloe will probably have

    Stalder ½ C + Inside stalder 1/1 E

    Inside stalder ½ D + Inside endo D + Jaeger D (0.2)

    Bail D +stalder shoot C (0.1)

    Stalder 1/1 D + dismount D (0.1)

I get 6.1 for this routine but I wasn't sure of the value for the inside endo or the CV for the first combo. Can anyone clarify? Larrissa is going to be challenged by Chloe and Georgia S for the bars spot I think.

    ReplyDelete
  43. what about:

    Stalder ½ C + Inside stalder 1/1 E + Bail D +stalder shoot C (0.3)

    Inside stalder ½ D + Inside endo D + Jaeger D (0.2)

    Stalder 1/1 D + dismount D (0.1)

That gets 6.3 with the same skill set. What is the point of the stalder 1/2 before the inside stalder 1/1? she has enough skills to count without it and it gets no CV.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hope she can do more than just bars, gets into the National Squad before then and gets a string of International comps behind her to prove herself!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hey Zoe, NEVER GIVE UP! And that goes for anyone who is being discounted!

You are ALL amazing, talented, dedicated and focused and no-one here has a crystal ball into the future.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Gym qld senior states are end of next month so looking forward to seeing the qld girls compete then!

    ReplyDelete
  47. And also watching tom and josh compete as thet are the two guys vying for the one spot and they are both from qld

    ReplyDelete
  48. from where I sat, section 119, front row, Georgia Simpson's injury was more than a disclocation...she had an open wound and it took at least 10 minutes to clean up the blood
