Sam Offord Update

The Herald Sun online is running a short piece on Sam Offord, detailing his injury sustained at the Waveney club friendly.

We wish him the best for a speedy recovery.

No Sir That Ain't Right.

Coverage of women’s sport makes up 9% of all sports coverage in Australian television news and current affairs, while male sport makes up 81%.

Horse racing alone receives more airtime that all women’s sport combined, making up the other 10% of all coverage.

Appalled?

Well, they've opened the floodgates for the year.

Run with this opportunity as you see fit.

Don't Hate. Cooperate.

It's nice to have greater traffic numbers stopping by here when Anon is switched on, but there is still some tetchiness hanging about in the comment areas, notably since various assignments and lists have been announced.

Working with geeks, as I do four days of the week, you get funny and apt stuff circulating about the office and pinging between inboxes.

This is one of those things, and I hope you all keep it in mind when feeling like getting yourself into a nasty situation in the Comments.

(caution: low level coarse language)

Love, Mez and the lovely geeks she works with.

Heads Up

Greetings all,

Just a quick note to say that I will be re-instating the Anonymous comment function within a week for the run-up to, and days of, the National Championships.

I simply ask that contributors refrain from inappropriate or unsubstantiated remarks. You are advised that many competitors, their gym friends and their family members, frequent this blog for updates so it is best to think before you speak.

And on the topic of the National Championships, which hometown gymnastics hero was named Outstanding Athlete of the Year at the 2011 Australian University Sports Awards?

AGB June Update

Hi everyone.

This is a very important announcement about a decision I have had to make regarding the Australian Gymnastics Blog. I understand that it could divide my readership, but it is a step towards making the blog a more streamlined and un-jumbled space once it gets back in action.

As of this evening, I will be removing the Anonymous comment option from the blog. From here on in, you will have to sign in with a Google or OpenID account (all completely free to sign up for; if you use Gmail for email you can sign in with that ID). Posts are getting bogged down in back-and-forth debate that is veering very far away from post content. There are also random queries being posted here that don't have much to do with anything and they are getting lost and unanswered.

I will also be enforcing the following general rules of thumb:

- If you have a question about what club or level is best for your budding gymnast, please direct it to Gymnastics Australia or the Down Under area of WWGym (www.wwgym.com/forum). Your query can be answered by the multitude of informed and informative people at either space. And if you're not sure... simply have a crack at Googling or phoning some clubs.

- If you have a question pertaining to club protocol, levels skill requirements or level progression, please direct it to Gymnastics Australia, the Down Under forum of WWGym, or your club. Basically, see the point above. Forums are absolutely the best place for questions (particularly from parents wanting to sniff out resourceful competition attendees) beginning "Does anyone know how...?/Did anyone happen to see the results for...?" and if you've never been to one before, better late than never!

- I encourage anyone with a query not relating to post content or discussion to direct it to GA, WWGym or to my Formspring account listed in the sidebar. These resources can help point you in the right direction.

- If you wish to post results or competition result/video links, kindly email me first at ozgymblog@gmail.com and contain the links in your email. This way I can put them in a lovely big post so they don't get lost in the commenting ether. The whole world can properly see your initiative! You will be of course fully credited (or remain anonymous if you wish) and get lots of shiny kudos.

- Comments reporting on gymnast circumstances that are NOT confirmed publicly by Gymnastics Australia, said gymnast's club or said gymnast's family will be promptly deleted. I do not encourage the rumour mill or hearsay swiped from Facebook.

- AGB frequently highlights gym events in Victoria because its author (me!) lives and works in Victoria. That said, news and observations from around the country are always warmly welcomed. I might appear one-sided but please understand that I am limited by logistic and budget constraints!

So there you have it. Coal is being shovelled onto the fire, and AGB is very slowly shunting to life once again. Stay tuned for news and notes on the road to Nationals.

Your contributions still are, and always will be, extremely important to me. I am happy to discuss any of these changes with you at any time (but kindly don't resort to spamming old posts with complaints).

Cheers ears.

- M.

DISPATCH FROM GLORIOUS LEADER

Greetings comrades on this, Wednesday the something-or-other of May.

You may be wondering why The Australian Gymnastics Blog has been sketchy with updates and live coverage of late. There are a number of contributing factors which I will explain forthwith, and in return ask that you be patient as I attempt to resume regularly scheduled programming.

*shuffles papers*

1. As of January this year, I have undertaken a major career change. As of this week it is set in stone. Simultaneously exciting and terrifying for all involved. It has meant a significant change to my free hours during the day, and frequent devotion to new training materials outside of work hours. It is a gigantic learning curve but I am enjoying it so far. In fact, I kind of have the strength of this blog (if you'll excuse me saying so) for helping me get the job in the first place.

2. My family is celebrating a SECOND wedding in as many years. My beloved big brother had a happy occasion last year, and this week my beloved big sister called from overseas to announce some exciting news of her own. So planning and arrangements and diarising has thrown us into chaos a little!

3. I spent March-April making the transition from one room in our house to a detached room out the back. I had a lot of waiting to do, as the MezMaison got painted and re-floored. And then in addition to shifting furniture and clothes in instalments, and buying (then putting together!) an adequate bed, I had to do a big cull of a lot of precious things (many of them gym related) and take certain things to op-shops... basically reassessing everything I owned and semi-hoarded up until the age of 24. It wasn't easy!

4. I ceased my internet contract with Optus and have spent some time searching for a better provider. I have in the meantime been doing a lot of correspondence from my phone.

So turn that frown upside-down. AGB is still around and will resume frequent updates shortly. I definitely plan to be on the ball come Nationals. I certainly don't plan on abandoning my baby!

I have had a hectic last six months, and 2011 shows no sign of slowing down, in Mez world and in gymnastics world. I appreciate everyone who has got in touch regarding news and media pieces. They have not gone unnoticed! Please stick around and rest assured AGB will be back to its old self in no time.

I wanted to do all this as a vlog but... yeah... see point 4.

If you'd like to find out more information about what's in store at AGB (namely - me writing heaps of good brainthinky stuff 'n' that) or highlight an issue you think needs discussing, you can always drop me a line at ozgymblog@gmail.com

The future is bright. The future is AGB.

The Village People

Team AUS has departed for Delhi and we wish them the absolute best.

In case you missed it in the earlier post, check out Peggy Liddick's camp report here.

I have a couple of items I want to share with you, because we've all been concerned of late with the state of the Commonwealth Games athlete village and sporting venues.

The first is an update on of the Games site. The following email was circulated yesterday, from CWG Association head Perry Crosswhite to all participating athletes and coaches.

*************************************************

We have now been in Delhi for more than a week and I thought it a good idea to provide another update on the things we have done to prepare for your arrival to take part in the Commonwealth Games. We now have moved into the Village and are occupying the apartment buildings which will be the home for all of us for the next few weeks. I understand that there has been reporting in the media about the poor state of the Village and I wanted to let you know of what is the current situation.

As mentioned in my previous update the residential part of the Village is made up mostly of 8 storey tower blocks which have 3 and 4 bedroom apartments on each floor. These are newly constructed and had in some cases not been adequately finished, and/or had not been cleaned to an acceptable level. The pictures which have been published recently in the Australian media were possibly taken in the residential part of the Village but certainly were not of the Australian Team's area.

With respect to the buildings where the Australian Team will be staying (Towers 19, 20 and 21) we are ensuring that these buildings are thoroughly cleaned, and that required repairs carried out. All of this work should be completed within the next two days.

We have received our sea and air freight which has the equipment and supplies needed to support you. This includes everything from energy bars to medical supplies to vegemite to wheely bins (for ice baths). Jimmy Tansey from adidas is with us in the Village and is setting up the uniform exchange store.

We are confident you will be safe and comfortable in the apartments and today I took the Channel 10 reporters on a tour of one of our buildings so that viewers might have something they can see rather than only reading adverse media reports about the state of the Village.

As mentioned in my previous update the food in the Dining Hall is excellent, while the training and other facilities in the International Zone are good.

With respect to health issues, our Team Medical Director, Dr. Peter Harcourt, who arrived at the Village yesterday has, among other things, spent time in the dining hall looking at food preparation. He has also been monitoring other Team health areas such as water treatment and the Village mosquito spraying program.

As mentioned in my previous update there is a highly visible level of security for the Games (Village, venues, transport routes, and airport). This remains the case, and if anything there appears to be more security persons on duty than a week ago.

I am aware of the not unexpected concerns of the Team members regarding thier personal safety and the Games. All of us have found the Village to be a safe place to live.

The second item is a video of the Games Village's inaugration from Indian news network LiveX. It shows many of the facilities and amenities in a totally different light to what we have been seeing. Make up your own minds about what to expect in Delhi (once they stop spinning from all that zaaaaaany camera work).

Shaken and Stirred

Very best wishes to all our gymnastics friends and families down in Christchurch, New Zealand. Hope all are managing to cope in the less-than-ideal circumstances.

Thoughts in particular go out to Holly Moon, whose Commonwealth Games progress was updated thusly at Facebook:

"Holly's preparation for Delhi has been affected, it is difficult to get sleep with tremors coming through frequently. CSG [Christchurch School of Gymnastics] is also closed at least for another 24 hours"

With more information from the Gymnastics Coaching Blog here.

Speaking of issues, click through to read a new article about the recent WAG Commonwealth Games team lineup change. Includes statements from Peggy Liddick.

Liddick was adamant Monckton's future remained bright despite the prospect of another six-month lay-off. "She certainly won't give up - a lot of people would walk away," said the long-time national coach.

"She was actually consoling me when she called to tell me. She's a very brave girl."

The Road to Nationals: SE Queensland

Videos have cropped up from the recent SE Queensland regional championships and state trial, many thanks to the YouTuber who went to the effort.

Check out some stars from the sunshine state here.

Also (swinging by Perth for just a moment), it was reported in The West Australian today that senior Emily Little has withdrawn from Commonwealth Games selection trial but has not abandoned her campaign to compete in Delhi altogether.

The report explained that she has strained elbow ligaments after an awkward landing on a bars dismount. It's not serious, although she will apparently be petitioning through to the second Worlds team trial in addition to the Commonwealth Games team selection. Liz Chetkovich said (forgive me if this quote is not verbatim) that she, "imagines [Emily] will be selected based on her performances earlier this year, but with the proviso that she will have to show fitness before the team's departure for India". The injury will prevent her from doing weight-bearing exercise for three weeks, leaving her just a couple of weeks to get ready for the Games selection trials. It is believed this would be too short a time period, thus they felt the need to withdraw Emily.

Liz is confident Emily will be back in training before Nationals, but in the meantime she is working on leg strength, flexibility and overall choreography.

Lauren Mitchell
is back to "95%" and should be ready for trials, despite her tumbling and vault work still being done on soft surfaces to protect her ankle.

And if you hadn't spotted it earlier (I thought people had been talking about some other person named Olivia, duh), Olivia Vivian is returning home (!!!) to compete as part of WA's National Level 10 team. Click this link to read more about her thoughts on the event. Oh yes, there WILL be an AC/DC floor routine at Nationals.

Woe.

Holed up with a bung foot and a bunch of lost data - very important data - including (potentially) my remaining Pacific Rim videos that were yet to be uploaded.

I just... I can't... it's not... I don't... I... buh...

DOOMED.

Disgruntled of Melbourne

You can follow a link to the petition I have created (re: National Sports Museum) here.

I apologise for any typographical or factual errors, I did my best to include the most 'resume boosting' results across the gymsports (and I admit I do not know a great deal about sports aero or acro), not counting Commonwealth Games results. I unfortunately neglected to mention that a number of Aussie gymnasts have skills named after them in the artistic Code of Points (you'll also notice that neither 1999 nor 2000 falls "between 2001-2009", duh).

Errors aside, your signature and support will mean a lot. I'll be emailing it to the National Sports Museum once I reach an adequate number of signees. You can opt to make your email address private when you sign, and I will not be passing on any details to advertisers or other parties. Please send the link to families and/or friends and get them to sign too. Our strength lies in our numbers!

This petition is not being circulated in association with, or on the behalf of, Gymnastics Australia or its affiliated state associations. I take full responsibility for any and all outcomes involved with its publication.

Thank you for your time.

Pretty Shoddy News

On top of the news that the acrobatic gymnastics component of Pacific Rim 2010 has been cancelled due to lack of interest (see GA for a statement), it is with much sadness and sighing that I now post the following message from Wolfie, moderator of the Aussie Gymnastics Message Board.

Hi Gym Peeps,

It's been fun, but the time has come to say goodbye to the Aussie board. We just don't have the traffic or the interest for it to continue.

If you want to keep up with gymnastics news both in Australia and internationally, I recommend the following links (in no particular order):

Gymnastics Australia: http://www.gymnastics.org.au/
- (For officially sanctioned news from GA)
GA on Twitter: http://twitter.com/GymAustralia
- (Get the goss - the recent goss on Aussie gym news)
Mez's blog: http://ozgymnastics.blogspot.com/
- (Find out Mez's perspective on things. She's a passionate Aussie gymnastics fan, but hey, you already know that. You're here!)
WWGym: www.wwgym.com
- (Understand what's happening around the world. Chat and debate with people who aren't antipodean)
The Gossip Board: http://gymgossip.com/
- (Edgy, definitely adults-only, highly moderated, but a really good source of the latest news, scores, gossip and opinions)
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6781861362
- (A Facebook group for Aussie gymnastics run by Mez)
The Couch Gymnast: http://couch-gymnast.blogspot.com/
- (An internationally focused gym blog)

There are many more, but I think you'll find the ones listed are a good start.

Long live Aussie Gymnastics!

Love Wolfie.

It is a shame, as I've always tried to direct any prolonged discussions over there.

So, in the past year we've bid farewell to the message board and the A-Z of Australian Gymnastics, two very important and entertaining webspaces that inspired, informed and nurtured this blog from its humble beginnings in 2008.

My best to all who contributed to both spaces, I appreciate the great discussions and experiences we shared. It was a pleasure and a privilege to meet some of you in person. I like to think I have some great friends standing behind me and the blog as we trundle along the dusty path of gymnastics fan reporting and spectating.

To paraphrase a late, great, author - So long and thanks for all the dish.

Dear O Dear

As Oregon State University's competitive season trucks along, there have been mixed fortunes for the two Australians in their gymnastics lineup.

Olivia Vivian is getting better and better on beam, floor and bars and contributing weekly to The Barometer. Olivia was lucky enough to recover from a finger injury and a bout of sickness recently.

Mel Jones, superb on floor last week, hasn't been so lucky, according to this extract on the team's progress from the Gazette Times:

Freshman Melanie Jones was forced into action on the vault last week for [injured teammate Kelsi] Blalock. Jones has been slowed by a long-term left shoulder injury.

Most of her scoring contributions have come on the beam three times. Her 9.675 vault and stellar 9.900 floor exercise at Cal were the first time she scored on those events. She performed exhibition before.

"Melanie is doing very well," Chaplin said. "She came in and did an OK vault. She just needs her chest a little higher. She's scoring a little higher and needs to continue those improvements. Her confidence is getting better."

Jones injured her shoulder more than a year ago in Australia and waited until after the Olympics for surgery. There was another setback in the fall at OSU on the bars.

She won't be able to do a bars routine this season. Chaplin has doubts she'll ever do one again.

"It's been a slow start getting back onto everything," Jones said. "Hopefully, I can get back on everything next year. Back in Australia (training) was more intense with more hours and harder skills. Here is more relaxing and less intense. So it's easier to cope with."

That's a bit of a downer. But Mel, like Olivia, has been able to stay strong for her adopted team and compete as best she can despite niggling setbacks. Both wear the orange and black as proudly as they wore the green-and-gold and their perserverance is to be commended.

I'm not yet commenting on the business that's going on the previous post's comments until something more official is made public.

In further green-and-gold news, the Winter Olympics opening ceremony is on now (1pm), I thought it was to be midnight! I spotted Dave so I'm happy.

Food for Thought

Well, hi there.

Are you a gymnast, coach, gym parent or health expert working in conjunction with an Australian gymnastics program?

I'd love to hear from you!

There is an interesting discussion happening at the WWGym forum about nutrition programs and diets within gymnastics programs around the world. I know the AIS has great information available for athletes about the meals served in their dining hall, and that in most state programs there are dietitians and nutritionists that consult training centres.

What's emphasised within your gym's/state's program?
What do you think works? What do you think doesn't work?
What system do you have in place with the gymnast/s in your family?
What measures do you use to ensure moderation?
How do you marry food consumption with exercise plans?
How are sweets or favourite treats managed?
How (if at all) is alcohol managed for athletes 18 and over?
How do competition season meal plans differ from 'off season' meal plans?

Comment away, my foodie friends! Let's get some discussion cooking!

And don't forget to send your entries in for the 2009 Worlds team fan project! It's quite easy to do and is guaranteed to bring some smiles!

Ch-ch-ch-changes.

They must be handing out free kittens or something at Moreton Bay College.

Amaya King-Koi has now made the move to the centre, and begun training under Chloe Sims' old coaches. This means MBC now boasts four national team members in Bambi, King-Koi, Larissa Miller and Georgia-Rose Brown (the latter two are pictured below).

Speaking of Bambi, it is believed her recent leg injury is actually a sustained hip injury. No confirmation on this yet (but it's pretty crap news either way!)

Sims Talks Exclusively to IG

International Gymnast has an interesting interview with Chloe Sims as she talks about her return to competitive gymnastics.

"I do not wish any of the future gymnasts to have to compete not only with other athletes but also the unnecessary politics within the sport," she told IG. "It can ruin so many dreams and waste so much potential for Australia to become an even stronger competitor in the world. On a more positive note, I am starting university next week, studying business and majoring in management. I hope to one day open a tattoo and piercing studio in Australia."

Late Breaking News

I hate the way eight hour work shifts completely throw off my blogging priorities! How rude!

Yes, the Japan Cup WAG team (July) has been named.

Shona Morgan, Lauren Mitchell, Britt Greeley and BAMBI!

I really like this team. I really do. Except I, too, would've liked to see Georgia Bonora have a crack at it also. But you can't have everything I suppose. Any of these four girls (notably the first two) could head to Worlds this year, this will be vital competition experience.

International Gymnast expands a little on Dasha Joura's injury update (correction: they're expanding on GA's latest piece). She will take on a 'team management' role alongside the WA team at nationals this year. This little beacon of hope crops up so I don't think all is lost:

“Looking on the calendar…the Pacific Rim Championships in April next year… I suppose I can put a red flag on there and see how I go and see if I can prepare for that one.”

So... who wants to sign my cast?

A Little Disappointment

I am sooooo thrilled with this decision.

GA has released this statement -

Australia will no longer be sending any athletes to compete at the Pre-Olympic Youth Competition.

Emily Little's coaches have made the decision prior to a performance test that was scheduled this week. It has been decided that Emily will remain in training at the WAIS for the National Championships. Whilst it was initially thought that the event would provide solid preparation for her run into the National Championships, it has been decided to turn all attention to physical preparation and the consolidation of new skills.
