Rotterdam 2010: Apparatus Finals Day 2 Wrap-Up

What's to wrap up? Except WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!

(Mark Baretta gave her a Twitter shout-out. I responded (along the lines of "I was one of many up late watching her, she is an inspiration!") so here's hoping my message makes the telly if they mention her again.

We shall have to shift Lauren Mitchell Day, methinks!

Lauren's reaction here as well as here.

The best moment for her? "It's pretty amazing seeing the Australian flag being risen," she said. On Peggy Liddick: "She's been an amazing coach throughout my whole campaign," Mitchell enthused. "She's been great support. Everyone's been fantastic."

Media here and here and here plus Couch Gymnast's on-the-scene coverage here.

"I think I nearly started crying. It didn't feel like my routine was so good but obviously it was. It's kind of surreal at the moment.

"I've been pushing and pushing and pushing and finally I've got it!"

Thanks to Gymnastike, here is Lauren's routine:

And (hankies at the ready, SHE GETS APPLAUDED AS SHE WALKS IN!) here is Lauren's interview with Gymnastike afterwards:

Visit gymnastike.org for more Videos

"I really need to think of a new word other than amazing, no it’s fantastic! Coming from the beginning of the year and not competing at any events until the Commonwealth Games, it is a fantastic feeling."

LOZ YOU'RE AMAZING AND FANTASTIC AND WE LOVE YOU!

AND YEAH. PRETTY DAMN 'GROUSE', NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT.

If you see Lauren in the news today, drop me a line!

  3. There's an interview up with Lauren after the floor final on youtube. Couldn't find anything else as yet. Just type in 'Lauren Mitchell 2010 World Championships' and it should come up, but I am sure lots of videos will pop up in the next few days.

P.S I am living O/S at the moment and that's why I am up - I haven't been up all night searching for interviews!

  4. Sunrise just mentioned Lauren's win in their sports report and showed a blurry screen shot from the podium. Everyone in the studio clapped.

I don't care that it was a blurry shot because LAUREN IS A WORLD CHAMPION! She should have won a medal for that awesome beam routine too but I digress. LAUREN IS A WORLD CHAMPION!

  5. Oh, and now Sunrise has shown a snippet from Lauren's floor routine and medal ceremony. Woohoo!

  12. it's fantastic Martine, Emily and Georgia S were there to see it as well...

  13. was the rest of the team not still there?

    ReplyDelete
  14. no, they were there, I just mean that they are her long time teammates from WAIS and I think Martine wasn't there when she got her silvers last year.

  16. it was all just so wonderful to see! They just finished the broadcast here in the US and knowing the outcome didn't make me any less nervous for Loz!

I nearly cried when Peggy ran over to hug Lauren and was saying "Lauren, I'm so proud of you! I'm so proud of you! World champion!"

An incredibly successful world championships for team Australia! Onward to further success in Tokyo and then London!

  17. I was touched to see that Peggy made the effort to sing the words. That was a really nice thing to do when Australia is not her country of birth. Is she an Australian or American citizen?

    ReplyDelete
  18. anon, I don't know Peggy's citizenship status, but if I knew the words, I'd sing, too! Lovely anthem. Way easier than the insanely difficult anthem us Americans are stuck with! (although, I should note, I happily sing along to "Oh, Canada" as well. I'm an equal opportunity anthem singer!)

  19. Just rewatched the floor final on the official site. It was so cute how the Italian coach whipped out his camera to take a picture of Peggy and Lauren hugging for his own personal records.

Also, this is George Tatai, Peggy's husband, having a coronary in the stands! lol

  21. Loz was mentioned on Sunrise, Morning Show and Sky Sportsline before I left for work. I am unfortunately here til 7 so I will miss seeing her on the 'primetime' news! Still feel like it's a dream (and I'm not even her coach)!

  24. Dasha and Lauren were certainly a formidable duo. If Dasha ever did make a comeback, they would complement each other perfectly. Both good on vault and floor, Lauren great on beam, and Dasha great on bars.

  27. GO LAUREN!!! GO AUSSIE GYMNASTICS!!!

Just wanted to congratulate Lauren on her recent achievements both in Delhi and especially in Rotterdam!

World Floor Champion - that's an amazing feat! Not to mention 6th All Around and 4th in the Beam Final - sensational effort!

I'm so happy for Lauren and her coaches and for Gymnastics Australia in general.

To have an Australian woman top such a competitive field of international gymnasts is incredible. Lauren is such an inspiration to young gymnasts all around the country, and indeed the world!

Thank you for representing Australian Gymnastics with such class, grace, poise, strength, humility and artistry!

    Enjoy your achievements Lauren!

PS: here is a link to Lauren's beam routine in event final in Rotterdam for those who are interested and haven't found it yet!
