Doha Delights

Unfortunately, I didn't get to post this earlier today.

Good news out of the Doha Challenger Cup!

All members of the Aussie delegation have made apparatus finals at the competition- Ashleigh Brennan will contest beam and floor finals; Larrissa Miller will join her in the floor final and line up for the bars final.

Fresh from a first place pommel final qualification in Paris, Prashanth Sellathurai has qualified in first to the pommel final and sixth to rings.

You can see some photos of the team in action at Gymnastics Australia or at the Victorian Women's High Performance Centre page at Facebook.

Here's hoping all our Aussies equal (or better!) their rankings and bring home some hardware.

If you would like to see some videos from the recent Wild Rose Invitational, check out this YouTube channel. Katie Wurth's striking floor routine is of particular note.

Edit Friday: More good news out of Doha as apparatus finals play out - Congratulations Larrissa Miller for snaring a silver in the bars final behind Tan Sixin of China (5.9/13.450)!

And in news just to hand, Prashanth Sellathurai won pommel!

Edit Saturday: It keeps getting better and better - Ashleigh Brennan adds to Australia's tally with a silver on beam (13.800, a few wobbles but stayed on) and a silver on floor (5.3/13.300)!!!

Larrissa Miller unfortunately couldn't quite keep up in the floor final and suffered a fall on her double arabian (12.150)

Thanks to Wen Shuli for finding this photo of the bars medallists:

You can see Larrissa's silver-medal bars routine in the video below (02:53 in). Check the nailed dismount!

Fantastic!

Prashanth took out the Pommell with a D of 6.9 and an E of 9.05!

I like Katies floor but she just needs to watch her split leaps and those crossed ankles on the twists

is katie training tumble upgrades? I think the tumbling is the only thing holding it back right now because the dance is fabulous. Would be proud to put that on the floor at worlds if if the tumbles improved.

Sorry, forgot to add Ash is about 5:14 in. Good to see Peng Peng Lee back in competition too, she is up first for those interested.

Ash and Larrissa's floor routines here at this youtube account:

great double Arabian from Larrissa except for the fall :(

Anonymous said...

Yes, I agree: the double arabian looked good and tight and very easily accomplished, just overrotated unfortunately. She actually looks quite comfortable with her current tumbling -- maybe time to upgrade?

I am hoping to see front 1/1 + front double. Her front double is so good. I also think they need to do something about the 2.5 twist because the form is bad. She used to do a double pike so that or a double tuck would be a better d dismount I think.

i hope Ash might upgrade her tumbles and dance again. She is doing a really nice job with what she's got but she's maxing out in the low 13s.

Britain in Rotterdam had something like 4 exercises worth over 5.5, whereas we had, besides Lauren, between 5.0 and 5.3. they smashed us on that event.

were there skills missing from Larrissa's bar as her D score does'nt seem as high as usual.Great dismount.

I don't think Larrissa is competing the Adler anymore.

Anonymous said...

She also didn't compete her inbar half+jaeger. I heard the Adler was giving her shoulder problems so we probably won't see it again.

Larissa's bars were great! She catches very close though doesn't she? But that dismount was fantastic!

Well doen to both Larissa and Ash on their great results in Doha! Top work girls!

Larrissa's bars were nice, but they haven't really improved since 2009. i would love to see her add more skills and really take that routine to the next leve, back into the realm of event finals. Since 2009 everyone else has upgraded and she has been left behind.

does anyone have any updates on Chloe Sims? Is she planning to compete at the QLD trial in Toowoomba in May?

Anonymous said...

Yes I beleieve she is competing at the State Trial. She is looking great in training and very fit :) she new floor routine looks amazing but I couldnt see much through the small window :( hope thsi helps

she has a facebook page where she posts updates specifically about her comeback. She said this on march 29:

'Had a great day at training tonight. starting to get back into vaulting. but made a connection on bars tonight that is worth 1.9!'

Any guesses on the UB series? looked at her old routine but the only thing i could come up with was inside stalder 1/2+jaeger+bail+stalder shoot, but that's not 1.9 anyways.

Anyone going to the VWHPC invitational this Saturday?

Anonymous said...

Yes i am going and i believe MLC seniors are also now competing

Anonymous said...

I am going :-)

Anonymous said...

Anyone who is going -- shall we organise a meet-up?

I'll start a thread over at WWgymn.

There are some great pictures on the VWHPC of the Doha trip, looks like the girls had some fun riding camels and spending time in the desert!

Unfortunately I can't be at the VWHPC Senior Invitational.

I would very much LIKE to be there, of course. But I have two non-blog-related reporting commitments in the city on the same day! Sorry, lovely people!

I love trials season!

Here is my list of the top 10 girls to watch:

1. Alex Eade, Junior
The future star of Australian gymnastics, already landing pike full ins and double layouts on the tumble strip and being generally awesome everywhere. Also has a new floor routine in the works.

2. Chloe Sims, Senior
It sounds like she's looking good and may be fit enough for a tilt at nationals. A fascinating comeback that could have real potential to help the team in Tokyo.

3. Emma Collister, Senior
Missing in action for nearly a year, it will be interesting to see how she goes against the big guns after being so successful as a junior.

4. Nicole Grout, IDP10
Will probably be a breakout performer for the South Australian program. Already has some fantastic skills, especially on beam where she has a stunning sheep jump.

5. Celeste Loo, IDP10
Returning to competition after more than a year, she will certainly be welcomed back. This girl has beautiful form and outstanding performance quality. Look out for wonderful choreography on floor performed with supreme confidence.

6. Zoe Lorenzin, Senior
My dark horse for the world team. Montreal showed she clearly didn't have the difficulty levels yet, but she has time. Spunky choreography and a superb toepoint makes this girl a special one. Rumoured to be training a DTY as well.

7. Elisha Lai, IDP10
Winner of IDP8 at national clubs, she should be doing optionals for the first time this year. Fantastic flexibility and beautiful leaps really set her apart.

8. Katie Wurth, Senior
She impressed a lot of people at Wild Rose with her
presence and dance ability. It will be interesting to see if she can make some solid improvements and upgrades to her routines to move into contention for world trials and possibly more.

9. Jazmine Casis, IDP10
Won IDP10 at national clubs as an AIS athlete. Now that she has moved to Westfields it will be interesting to see how she has progressed.

10. Georgia Godwin
Rumoured to be training various awesome skills such as double layout, triple twist, 2 foot layout on beam and DTY. A great power athlete who is sure to do well if she can improve her form.

Jazmine not at westfields

Is she at MBC?

Anonymous said...

Where Is Jazmine? It would be very interesting to see what she is up to, a beautiful gymnast to watch.

someone posted that she is a queensland scholarship holder at MBC.
