2012 American Cup (Contin.)

A correspondent for The Couch Gymnast has dutifully put up a video of Georgia's bar work during podium training today.

ETA: Unfortunately I was not up to watch the stream. However, I believe they showed Georgia's floor routine and it sounds like people were pretty impressed with it. I will post video and photo links as they come in after the event.

The final women's standings were:

1. Jordyn Wieber USA 61.032
2. Alexandra Raisman USA 60.832
3. Larisa Iordache ROM 59.332
4. Victoria Moors CAN 56.365
5. Diana Chelaru USA 56.100
6. Lisa Katharina Hill GER 55.599
7. Georgia Simpson AUS 54.566
8. Rebecca Tunney GBR 52.132

Full HD coverage of the competition as it aired on NBC can be found here. Thanks as always to NastiaFan! Georgia's floor is at 1:01:38

(if you listen veeeeeery carefully, just after she is announced, some encouraging young fans yell out "Go Georgia! Go Aussie!" which I think is very sweet.)

You can see Georgia's (non-televised) bars routine in the video below.

Her bars are lovely!
Raisman, weiber and Douglas are all doing amanars now :S

Looking good! Please tell me she's working on a higher difficulty dismount though, in time for London?

Also, when is an aussie going to pull out an amanar??

Anonymous said...

I think lauren or Emily are the only ones likely to

Georgia has been working on upgrading her dismount on bars. I'm sure WAIS will be on top of it. Bit by bit, building on her difficulty, it can't all happen at once. They ont really need her at her best yet.Given her history they will be doing it in progression to keep her healthy .

Go Georgia, you rocked in your first very big international comp..You must have had nerves of steel to see such a large audience and compete at your best.Go for the Gymix comp now and rock there too.Awesome Georgia!!!!!!

She did ok, but fell on beam and stumbled on floor. Of course nobody is expecting perfection but it was not exactly a clean comp for her, let's be realistic. I'm sure she wanted to go out there and show Peggy she could hit beam, but she has fallen there in both the big meets she's competed in now. Hoping she can stay on at Gymnix.

Georgia's DV were 5.0, 5.6, 5.7, 5.0

Presumably she will add a D dismount on bars before trials so she will be able to get up to at least 5.9 with the extra 0.2 CR and at least a 0.1 bump up from a counting C to a D, correct?

I don't think she's much of a threat to Larrissa on this event yet based on a few inbuilt deductions she has, like the low and underrotated tkatchev. I also don't think she's got the stability of someone like Brennan if she's going to be sent as a beam specialist, so it still seems most likely that Miller and Brennan will be the final two team members after presumably three AAers.

Well done to GSim, no it was not a perfect comp, but pretty good considering her International experience compared to some of our other girls. It was a HUGE crowd and very much geared for the Americans, very daunting I would imagine. Can only get better for her from here on.She made some good upgrades since the test event and I'm sure there is more to come ready for Nationals.her scores were very compatible to the scores the Aussies got at Worlds. So not that bad!

There might not even be a third all arounder, but this team could work very well.

VT
Brennan
Chung (by far most likely to have DTY if there is another to come)
Mitchell
Little

UB
Little
Chung
Mitchell
Miller

BB
Little
Chung (has competed a 5.8 routine at Gymnix 2011)
Brennan
Mitchell

FX
Little
Miller
Brennan
Mitchell

You could also sub out Chung for someone else who is going to do well on VT/UB/BB like Sims.

Anon 2.49: Who would be the 3 AA? Mitchell will not be AA so who do you think will be doing AA? Not Brennan or Miller. Miller often loses on execution.

I would be surprised if Mitchell does not compete the AA at the olympics? Is this confirmed or an assumption based on recent news?

Anon at 2:54, the scoring was noticeably generous here. For example, she scored 14.1 for a yurchenko full, which would never happen at worlds. Wieber got a 9.6E on her amanar which had preflight leg separation and was not even stuck. That says it all. So Simpson is probably still below par in terms of the girls who went to worlds.

Mitchell may not be competing bars at the moment but she will do everything she can to get it back for London

Let's say if Lauren is unable to do all around , who would do AA, this would change the whole dynamics of the team and what specialist would be included. It would have to be a bar worker as Brennan can't do bars.
The scores may have been inflated here on vault, maybe?
What would her score have been at Worlds? AB got 13.766, GRB 13.633,MAM got 13.466 for fulls, surely G.S would be up there with these girls. Her AA score is compatible with other international comps that all these girls have done in recent months. They had the added benefit of intense training camps and a string of comps whilst G.S was recovering from a dislocated patella. This is only her 2nd big comp since Slovakia last year where she placed 3 rd on beam and bars. Give her a break!

Think everyone is missing the point, GSim was sent to this comp for experience and so that she could get some valuable exposure which she certainly received, the press loved her and were full of praise about her elegance and presence on the floor. A very worthwhile exercise for her even if her difficulty is not where it needs to be YET.

Well Done to Georgia and her coaches for getting her back to International Competition after such a terrible injury in 2011. Even if she is not ready for this Olympics what a wonderful achievement for her and her support team. Hopefully she can continue into 2013 and beyond.

I wouldn't be ruling her out for this Olympics, she has as much chance as every one ,she is on par with most if the top runners.

I wonder if she can upgrade her vault, if so there could be a chance for Georgia for the VT/UB/BB spot.

Loved watching her floor and bars and her vault was very good .deserved the sore of14.1 . Georgia has received a lot of positive press with regards to how elegant and artistic she is at every International comp she has been able to attend. The press raved about her after Worlds 2010 calling her the "darling of the floor" at podium training and she was the alternate. I think as she improves with confidence the difficulty will also improve, she couldn't be in better hands than with top coaching team in Australia.

well done georgia! you have a new fan ;). Impressed by your floor upgrades, full in ;). i think shes competitive with the majority of Aus girls! i would put her ahead of GRB and mary anne atm.

I just watched the video of the American Cup....Americans are awesome although I wouldn't say their form is that fantastic. Georgia looked good on floor.....but difficulty is lowish. I heard the commentators saying that the top 2 gymnasts from their respective countries are invited to comp.....wonder how Georgia got invited??

Anonymous said...

The commentators are wrong if that is what they said. The invitations went in order to the top AA competitors at worlds (not sure how far they went down. The only AA finalists who came were the two americans and one of the german girls. After that they went to the team finalists and offered a place to each. Looks like Russia, china and Japan declined with Romania, great Britain, Germany and Australia accepting. This left one place which going to the top again (max 2 per country so no USA) meant Romania entered a second athlete. These places (offered to the top 8 teams) were to be nominated so anyone could go. None of these athletes were in the top 24 at worlds and all except for Chelaru (I think she was at worlds) did not even go to worlds. Hope this helps. None of the top teams would bother to send their top athletes to this event as it is so early in the season and they have other events to prepare for. Romania is the exception obviously as Lordache (age ineligable for 2011) needed the experience. Not sure why they sent Chelaru also but sure they had their reasons.

Surely Georgia is a chance for London, or they wouldn't be wasting valuable international experience and exposure on her otherwise.

I hope she upgrades in time and can get there. Would love to see her on the team.

I was there she was fabulous! She had the nicest leotard and the best musicality of the meet. She almost even seemed to be doing beam to music, it was great - great rhythm, her movement evokes feeling even on beam. I will post her floor routine and beam routine to my blog soon - but they are just from my iphone in the audience. We had great seats for beam- but floor the camera was in the way alot.
