The Couch Gymnast (No, Not That One!)

Here's a kooky little nugget I found.

Georgia Bonora was interviewed on Channel 31's The Silic and Lee Show. Hilarious stuff. Below is the extended third take of the interview. Nobody give her a lightsaber...

don't think she is doing herself any favours by saying she was intoxicated the day before olympic trials on a public interview. i am sure the selection committee will not be impressed if she thinks that is funny. not a good example for future gymnasts or hardly the behaviour of someone seriously training for the olympics.

She might've had the chance to explain/apologise to Peggy, might have sworn not to do it again. might've been disciplined for it. We don't know.

Hello she is and was an adult and can make her own choices. SHe still competed and made the team so what does it matter?

Anonymous said...

so, that is as if it is ok for athletes to break rules of the team.

Geez! She said slightly intoxicated, not blind drink. I don't see any problem with top level athletes having a few drinks on their birthday.

They should be encouraged to drink more. It seems to work for the Russians.

Please get over it Anon 1;55pm it sounded to me she was just trying to make conversation , i thought it was funny. Our gymnasts are smarter than that to stuff up the DREAMS that they have worked so hard to achieve.

Are they actually not allowed to drink alcohol? If so, that would be stupid!

Yea, pretty sure Peggy doesn't allow them to drink (or socialise or have fun, etc). I think it is a bit a problem. They should allow the girls to integrate their life with gymnastics, rather than the current situation of putting their life on hold for gymnastics. If gymnasts were allowed a more normal life, they could continue to compete, like some other international gymnasts, until their mid 20's. As we have seen from gymnasts like Tweddle and Kaeslin, they can continue to improve and have more success when they are older. But we won't see that happen here under Peggy's rules.

What a ridiculous comment. The girls have a perfectly fine social life. Peggy does not mandate their social life, she is the national coach not their mother! Why is it people find it unusual for them not to drink during training? Footballers don't as with most elite athletes during heightened training.

Footballers don't drink??? Are you the most naive person alive??? It would probably be a scandal if a football team stayed sober for a weekend.

Anyway, you are missing the point, nobody is suggesting they should be allowed to go out and get drunk. Just that a couple of drinks on someone's 18th is perfectly fine, and that Peggy's ridiculous rules do more harm than good.

Perhaps you misunderstood, during the season footballers are not allowed to drink - common knowledge and you hear about it all over the news when they do. You make out like Peggy rules these girls with an iron fist a long list of do's and don'ts and that is simply untrue. You are filling people's heads with rubbish.

I wish people would refrain from making comments on issues they know nothing about (anon 3.33) The girls have fun and enjoy life. They couldn't possibly participate in such a demanding sport if they were not.

actually if anything, she should be commended- it clearly didnt affect her performance ;)

"Perhaps you misunderstood, during the season footballers are not allowed to drink - common knowledge and you hear about it all over the news when they do."

Absolute rubbish. A close friend of mine is captain of a professional team and they aren't allowed to drink the night before a game and they aren't allowed to get drunk in public during the season. No one stands in their home to stop them having a beer or wine with dinner, or a few drinks on their birthday. You hear about them wasted on the town or peeing in a pot plant etc, not having a couple on a celebratory day.

Even then professional football is different to elite athletes. Elite athletes training for the olympics are training to peak at a certain time. If she was having a couple on her birthday she had probably discussed it with her coach etc. The 'selection' trial for Beijing was a load of rubbish anyway because they went nto camp forever and the REAL selection was at camp... when at the AIS there is NO way on earth she would have been able to find a drink, let alone get drunk. And it is THERE that she would have been training to peak...

Regardless, these girls are athletes but they are human first and foremost. She sounded like she was trying to be a bit funny on the vid and if it was her 18th she probably had two cruisers and was a bit tipsy, Lord knows with her body type and (assumed) lack of drinking experience it wouldn't take many drinks...

Overall, she just made a gymnast sound semi-normal and less like a 12 year old robot. Good on her!

Georgia Bonora has Italian parentage. Children learn to drink responsibly at the table. She could handle a celebratory drink even with her low body weight. No footballer comparison required.

I think you'll find that the day after her 18th birthday, she departed to Canberra for the training camp and subsequent trials for Olympics...think she was just making conversation....good on you Georgia, nice to know you're normal!

Hi,

I'm Dave, one of the hosts on the show (I'm the one sitting closest to Georgia.) I was wondering why this video was getting so many hits, and now I know why!!
Thanks for posting the link, it's great to get this interview out there for her fellow gymnasts to see.

I would also like to say, - I went to high school with Georgia and am personal friend of hers. Georgia is in no way shape or form irresponsible when it comes to gymnastics. She takes it as serious as any other competitor. It is her life and career and she wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardise that - she absolutely loves what she does. The comments she made about drinking and getting intoxicated before the trials should not be taken as seriously as the original anon poster made them out to be.
Georgia did not say she was blind drunk or pissed, she was simply making a joke and trying her best to give a humorous interview and share some funny stories.
Do you really think she would have made the team and gone on to achieve what she did if she really had gotten blind drunk or was irresponsible?? That's just ridiculous.

Bottom line is Georgia is a fantastic person, and her ethics, morals and commitment when it comes to her gymnastics are nothing but of the highest level.
Please don't take anything you hear in a comedic interview at face value.

Thanks guys,

Dave.

I'd also like to add that she does not live a sheltered or restricted life because of what she does. Of course, as with all athletes there's a certain level of responsibility that comes with the role, but she in no way has been held back from having a normal life - she's just like any other teenager, and she has the right to be so.

Dave.

Very well said Dave and thanks so much for clearing that up. I'm sure most of us sensible gym fans knew that Georgia wouldn't be anything other than highly professional in everything she does within the sport of gymnastics. It was pretty obvious to see the humourous context in which she was making these comments and therefore should be taken tongue in cheek. Thanks once again Dave for taking the time to post your comments :)

Hi Dave,

Thanks for dropping by!

We appreciate you clarifying the issue (why it had turned into a character assassination, I fail to understand). I, too, have met Georgia a few times in person (inside and outside of the gym) and, in short... she just rocks!

Once again, awesome interview. It's to see a different side to the athletes.

Cheers!
