Gymnix 2012

Good morning!

I didn't realise Gymnix was upon us already!

It's 7:30 in Melburne and the ever-dutiful Gymnastics Examiner is putting up podium training notes here. The Aussies are on this very minute!

ETA 12:30 - The VWHPC and Gymnastics Australia pages at Facebook are putting up photos. The team looked so thrilled to be in the snow!

ETA Fri 6:30am- Australia is having a second crack at podium training, read the observations as they come in here.

Spoilers: Nikki worked a DTY(!), Ash still has her double layout bars dismount (I love those!), Mez Monckton does a piked tkatchev instead of her Monckton, and worked a full twisting double lay dismount(!!!) Oh my good goodness!

ETA Saturday morning: The first session of the Gymnix Challenge round is over, stay tuned for session 2, in which we'll see the first cluster of Aussies competing at this event. For anyone unsure about how the competition is divided up, Blythe guesstimates thusly:

"The competition is broken up into three seperate competitions: First, there's the "Gymnix Challenge," an individual competition. Then there are the Junior and Senior Cups. As far as I can tell (please correct me if I'm wrong, Gymnix people!) the Junior Cup is a team and all-around competition, and the Senior Cup is only an all-around competition, where the very best (Lauren Mitchell, Emily Little, etc.) will compete."

ETA: Notes from Australia's session are here. The top 8 were as follows:

1) Lee: 57.875
2) Black CAN 54.375
3) Brennan AUS 53.675
4) Savona CAN 53.550
5) Merkle CAN 53.200
6) Brown AUS 52.750
7) Colussi-Pelaez ESP 52.625
8) Gardiner CAN 52.025

Full results from this session can be found here (under Challenge Gymnix).

A list of event finallists for this division is here. Australia will be represented in all finals but vault.

ETA Sunday: Morning! Live quick hits from the Senior and Junior Cup division of Gymnix will be going up here. Thanks, Blythe!

In terms of competitors, Lauren/Emily Georgia S compete the senior cup, Alex, Jazzy, Maddie and Tamika compete the junior cup. Get it, girls!

Gymnastics Australia are currently putting up photos from the event at Facebook.

Later... Congrats Emily Little, 2012 Gymnix Senior Cup AA champion! And our junior team came second behind Russia!

International Gymnast has a wrap-up here. Bring on apparatus finals!

Even later...

A rather lovely photo gallery from the senior/junior round is here.

I have a found a video of Emily's bars, looks like it might be from podium training?

ETA Monday morning: Follow along with apparatus finals quickhits here. I just read that Emily did a tuck full on beam!

In news just to hand - Aussie medals!

Senior:
BB Mitchell 1, Little 2;
FX Mitchell 1, Little 3
VT Little 1, Mitchell 3
UB Simpson 3

Junior
VT Jones 1 (tie)

Lots of details! Hooray!

Double lays and piked full-ins, be still my tumbling-loving heart!

Anonymous said...

Tamika jones is there! I first noticed her at nationals about 4 years ago I think in IDP 6. She was a standout then - hope we see some videos.

Anonymous said...

What a fabulous report! Sounds like the Aussies are doing really well and are showing some interesting upgrades. Hopefully we will see some video...

Good luck everyone!

Anonymous said...

I wonder what happened to Georgia Godwin who was originally names as reserve to Pac Rim and to go to Gymnix but now Tamika is there...

Anonymous said...

geogia godwin's coaches declined her reserve position because they chose not to attend the february camp. since georgia did not attend camp, she was not selected to travel when maddi leydin came to camp injured. so tamika got to travel and will compete in the gymnix junior team and travel to pac rim as the reserve. what a great debut for a junior, get to travel, train and compete with lauren and the rest of the olympic team.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if that was true. I am sure Georgia would have been given the chance to go to camp before Tamika was.
There must be something more going on with Georgia.

Anonymous said...

If the coaches didn't allow Godwin to go on the Feb camp that is a disgrace. These coaches seem to have too much power. Godwin should have te choice and I don't think she would have turned down the opportunity. I wish her well as she is a good little gymnast.
Great to see these junior getting opportunities, but what about the young seniors like Nedov and the other 95, 96 babies...these just fall into oblivion. No wonder they get disheartened and leave.

Anonymous said...

Did leydin travel injured? Surely not..

Anonymous said...

Arabian double front for Nikki Chung! And new floor!

Piked Tkatchev and full twisting double layout for Maryanne Monckton!

Sounds like ALL the girls have upgraded and are going well.

Anonymous said...

do we think Mitchell will get her double arabian beam dismount before the games? That is the upgrade I am hanging out for.

Chung also has some bars upgrades it seems.

Anonymous said...

Emma Nedov has a stress fracture in her back. However she is still keen to compete at Nationals

Anonymous said...

Seems Nikki has her inside stalder now.

says she is doing:

inside stalder 1/2 + jaeger

she could get a difficult little routine happening now if she can toss in a 1/1 and and non-turning one for element value.

Something like

inside 1/2 + jaeger
toe full + bail + free hip hecht to high
inside stalder + inside stalder 1/1+dismount

D
D
D
D
D
E
D
C

Then you have 3.2 + 2.5 + 0.5
= 6.2

Anonymous said...

Just going back to the juniors - all the other teams have 4 juniors listed - maybe Tamika will compete?

Anonymous said...

Wow loving these new skills! I really hope Mitchell can get the Patterson dismount!!

Anonymous said...

I think Tamika is listed to compete in the schedule. There are 4 Aussie Juniors competing . 3 Seniors listed in the Snr cup being Mitchell, Little and Simpson and the rest of the Snrs are listed to compete in the Gymnix Challenge.
Gymnix Challenge girls compete Friday evening, Jnr and Snr cup compete on Saturday evening .EF finals for all on Sunday afternoon. Think that is how it is scheduled, any one else no different?

Anonymous said...

There's probably been a misidentification by the person watching as it's more likely to have been Ash than Larrissa doing the Tsuk 1.5 as Ash was training it last year.

Some very exciting news about the much needed upgrades. I wasn't sure we would see so many with Peggy's predilection for not having major upgrades in the Olympic year.

Anonymous said...

Yay for the upgrades!

I reaaally hope Mitchell gets her Patterson on beam too. That would be wicked!

Mez said...

I suspected Brennan/Miller misidentification in terms of vault, but... you never know!

Anonymous said...

Maybe MAM is competing in th Snr Cup as she was training with the other girls and not the Gymnix Challenge girls.?Is the Snr cup AA?

Anonymous said...

Is this competition AA or can the girls compete apparatus only as I thought Lauren can't do AA at the moment.

Anonymous said...

Lauren will not do AA again.

Anonymous said...

I am sure georgia godwin's coaches have their reasons if in fact they had something to do with it, but i heard she is in the middle of upgrading across all aparatus. Should be interesting come nationals.

Anonymous said...

well that's Brennan's olympics over. It must suck having your inclusion in the team so dependant on others..

Anonymous said...

It hasn't been confirmed whether Lauren will or won't compete bars anymore:

Mitchell described the injury as "kind of like a stress fracture" brought on by constant pounding during her long career, and puts in doubt her chances of competing in the all-around competition at the Olympics.

"We're not sure yet, we're playing it by ear," she said.

"Peggy [Australian coach Peggy Liddick] wants to put the best team out, and obviously if my bars isn't good enough then I won't be going up in bars anyway."

Ash was reported to be training UB at the Gymnix so she's obviously aware that if Lauren can't swing bars she'll need to step up.

Anonymous said...

Yes she was reported doing bars, but struggling!
Lauren doing bad bars would probably score more than Ash doing good bars! I'm not being awful, Ash is just not a bar worker, never has been interested in improving as she has got by with 3 apparatus. Not upgrading much over the past couple of years just might catch up with her with girls like MAM, GRB, GS and NC all upgrading.

Anonymous said...

I am interested to see how Georgia Wheeler does here. She has fallen off the radar a bit but was always good on bars.

I think it's obvious that the 8 girls on this trip will most likely get spots at the second trial, which leaves only 4. I would almost suggest raising the spots to 15 given the huge quantity trialling.

Even considering only those of the non-competing girls who have represented Australia, you are still left with

Georgia Bonora
Angela Donald
Zoe Lorenzin
Katie Wurth
Amelia McGrath
Chloe Sims
Britt Greeley
Natalia Joura

They all really deserve to make it to the second trial if healthy, they have all done very well when healthy!

Anonymous said...

Yeah I love Georgia Wheeler, She's such a nice kid, I hope she does well :)

Anonymous said...

To Anon 10:09,

The juniors are going because PacRims is a Jnr/Snr competition - they can't take more than 3 of each so it makes sense for them to travel with the team to Gymnix too rather than new seniors (who may or may not be ready to compete). Probably depended who could put routines up at camp as well.

Aus could definitely use the upgrades on vault but it will be great in general if get some videos of this comp. Let's hope all the girls do well!

Anonymous said...

It maybe isn't just a matter or Lauren doing good or bad bars but whether training bars will put her other apparatus (and read individual Olympic medal chance/s and team result) in jeopardy.

Anonymous said...

I Heard Georgia Godwin was injured when the last camp was on so it makes sense her coaches don't risk a more permanent injury just by going to camp Peggy knows what she can do so it should be dependent solely by going to camp . Sometimes girls go overseas to these comps and come back more injured than when they left putting them out for the year eg Joura, Worth went to Marcilla and came back injured which put them out for the year . So I think coaches would be making decisions that are in the best interest of the gymnast and keeping them on track for competitions this year a very important year and if there in the middle of upgrades all the more reason to keep them training and perfecting them on home turf .

Anonymous said...

You are right, if girls are injured they need to be managed correctly and given adequate time to recover. Unfortunately some coaches and programs are better than others at this.
I wish Godwin and all other injured girls a quick recovery.

Anonymous said...

Nikki stood up her DTY! WOW! Brennan did tsuk full, doesn't look like Wheeler has upgraded her vault, GRB full, Larrissa ? MAM not vaulting.

Anonymous said...

Georgia Wheeler's vault has got to get the award for the most unfulfilled potential on any event, EVER. What a waste of her talent.

Anonymous said...

I can't understand why Australian coaches don't focus more on vault, we have have and had great girls with vault potential but they never nurture them. Georgia W has such potential but what are her coaches doing! Or the coaches don't know how to coach vault. I think it is the forgotten apparatus

Anonymous said...

I know! She has had that junior-level pike front for years.I can't believe it has been 2 years since her major international debut at Pacrim and there has been no movement on that event, especially since the team needs vaulters.

Anonymous said...

So Monckton's bars:

Toe full to giant to pike Tkatchev. Kicks the low bar and has to stop. Hop full to Tkatchev to Pak. Toe hecht to high, Blind to Markelov. Double layout.

Obviously going for toe 1/1+pike tkatchev by trials. nice.

Anonymous said...

By my calculations, that should be a 6.3 D-value for MAM when she connects the toe-full to the piked Tkatchev. Wooo!

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know of/have any video from gymnix?

Anonymous said...

Sounds like MAM only did bars and beam. Everyone else did AA. Sounds like the Aussies did better at training than in comp.

Anonymous said...

Wheeler blew it. Undercooked vault, fall on bars, fall on beam and OOB/stumble on floor. It must be so tough with the pressure to perform. I would probably replace her with Sims at the training camp.

Anonymous said...

Haters can stop hating for five minutes - Ash Brennan won the bronze medal in the AA at Gymnix. A great effort - especially for those who'd written her off.

Anonymous said...

her scores weren't that impressive however. 7.800 e-score on beam only. 12.300 only on bars.

Anonymous said...

doesn't seem Miller has yet eliminated the inbuilt deductions in her bars. For what was described as a fabulous routine she only got 8.050 e-score. No doubt GA will overscore her at nationals and trials but once again on the international stage her scores will be low because they keep turning a blind eye to the faults.

Anonymous said...

MAM only did bars.. Why would you send her all that way to do one apparatus. It doesn't make sense to me when there are seniors that could do all apparatus.

Anonymous said...

Obviously Ash did better than any of our other girls though. I say good on her! She has managed to stay healthy enough to compete for a long time and maybe her bars arent that great but she still has enough to prove all the naysayers wrong. Give her a break. And maybe she will be one of very few left still uninjured - whichll definitely work in her favour for the rest of this year.
Hopefully all our girls can come away from this meet knowing what they have to work on before the Olympics.

Anonymous said...

Yep that's why I said five minutes. I knew the haters couldn't hold back saying something negative for longer than five minutes.

She won a medal! This is awesome! Don't drag down her achievement!

Anonymous said...

Very interesting results. It will make picking the team hard. I think Ash is still in the running. Her beam and floor are just too consistent. If GRB can just add a bit more to her bars I think she will be hard to leave home. It wil depend on Nicki now that she has a DTY.
on the whole I don't think the girls did too bad considering it is early in the season.
next few months will be interesting. I think the team is going to be from this group of girls. The only one who I think has a chance is Angela if she is not injured.

Anonymous said...

Is MAM a bit of a favourite ? ? Why else would you take her for 1 event to finish 14 th?? Even Larrissa, she trained Beam, so why not have a go? Interesting all around scores, not exactly where I would think Peggy would like to see them. Yes , it's only early in the year, but Nationals is in May! Not that far away.

Anonymous said...

Have GA released the finalized schedule for nationals yet?

Mez said...

Maryanne will be getting back into full training soon (and is very much looking forward to it).

Anonymous said...

Selection is going to be HARD. I hate that it is only five girls. Our best on each apparatus are probably:

VT: Mitchell, Little and Chung all with DTY. Simpson did a near perfect FTY at Scam, and given WAIS's talents for vault, I can easily see that being upgraded. Brennan's Tsuk full may be slightly higher in difficulty but probably won't score as well. Same with Miller's vault. Brown also able to do a very clean FTY.

UB: MAM likely to be leading in difficulty once she can put the routine together. Followed by Miller (6.1 DV at Gymnix, Simpson, Chung (5.7) and Brown (5.6). Little able to put up a reliable starter if needed.

BB: Mitchell leading strongly here, followed by Brennan (6.0 DV at Gymnix with some problems, so likely able to start higher). Simpson and Little also likely starters here. MAM has a history of good difficulty on this event. Chung had a 5.4 at Gymnix. This is probably the apparatus that will be the most difficult for Miller or Brown to make a line-up in.

FX: Mitchell again obviously, and Brennan. Simpson building her difficulty and very clean. Miller upgraded -- had a 5.2 at Gymnix but not everything counted? Brown exquisite here (and usually does two double saltos, so perhaps will have higher DV in next comps). Will wait and see what Little shows tomorrow -- a new routine for her, I believe. MAM has shown a variety of good tumbling passes in the past and capable of good difficulty if healthy.

So main contenders:

Mitchell
Little
Simpson
Chung
Miller
Monckton
Brennan
Brown

And there may yet be surprises from some of the girls still at home....but even if we are only selecting from the above, we should have a reasonably strong team and a good chance at making team finals.

It will be excuciating to leave some of these girls off -- each has at least one apparatus where they could make a huge difference to Australia's chances.

Anonymous said...

Where are we seeing the results?

Anonymous said...

Gym nix website has results I just googled it. I hate that there are five not six per team now

Anonymous said...

Go Ash!! I'm so stoked she's doing AA because if Lauren isn't everyone else on the Oly team has to! Smart move. I think the Aus team is sounding awesome. Going to be so tough to whittle down to 5!!

Anonymous said...

Ash has a 4.6 D score on Bars...this does not make her an AAer

Anonymous said...

Georgia and Emily bombed beam. Lauren hit and dismounted with a double tuck. Prep for double arabian perhaps? hehe

Anonymous said...

Emily: full in pike, full in tuck, 1.5 to 2.5+stag, double pike.

Georgia fell on floor and went OOB.

Anonymous said...

So did GRB, Wheeler and Miller. OOB on floor.
A few of them also fell off beam or didnt have skills paid, wouldnt exactly say that they BOMBED beam!
Sounds like you want them to fail with your running commentary ? I'm sure people can read the quick hits themselves.

Anonymous said...

A lot of girls seem to have gone OOB perhaps it's the floor giving them some issues?

Anonymous said...

Lauren did bars? Now I'm confused!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Congrats to Emily! Good work

Lauren didn't do bars - typo

Anonymous said...

Emily did bars and they were marked Lauren. Aside from her fall on beam Emily did very well, her vault sounded like it was really well done. Seems like Lauren did very well on beam and floor and a nice FTY. Georgia S seemed to struggle a bit but her bars sounded like they were good.

Anonymous said...

Looks like the Aussie junior team came 2nd! Well done girls!!

Anonymous said...

I've started an Olympic thread over on WWGymn, in the Down Under Forum. I've listed the D-scores that we know for some of the gymnasts, but there are quite a few I don't know. Any help greatly appreciated!

The girls did fairly well despite the falls. Senior girls won every apparatus (Emily VT, Georgia UB, Lauren BB & FX.) juniors (team) won VT and UB with a close second on FX. If not for their beam rotation they might have won this. Not bad with half your team with pretty much zero experience. I hope Jazzy Cassis can control her power in time for PAC rim. Maybe just nerves? Feels like GW all over again - so much power to learn to control!

Anonymous said...

Yes, totally agree, well done to all the girls. Well done to Emily, shame she still doesn't have 2 vaults could easily win that event. Not the best comp for some but this is all about gaining experience and practice. I'm sure they will want to improve and know where they have gone wrong.good luck to all girls tomorrow competing in the event finals in all comps.

Anonymous said...

Coukd Emily contend for vault medals at events with a full field? If not she is better off concentrating on the role she has played so well for the last few years - team lead off. She has made most teams in the last few years on that basis. WAIS are unmatched in terms of training to get maximum participation in major teams - they aren't going to mess with a winning formular. I seem to remember that she vaulted a second vault at PAC Rim in Melbourne and won the bronze - so it isn't that she can't as much as she doesn't need to.

Anonymous said...

A little bit of Emily's bars:

The user says that they will have more vids up tomorrow.

Congrats to Emily for winning the all-around. Had Lauren competed bars, she would have only needed an 11.600 to win the AA :)

A comment from Gym examiner about the Aussies, disappointing at this level:

We've seen a bit of that here from the Aussies -- when they're a little off on beam, they just step off instead of fighting.

A full list of winners on yesterday finals of the Gymnix Junior Cup on Vault we got Tamika Jones tied up with Ellen Rabaut of Bel on the 1st place and our own Aussie gymnast Jazminne Casis won the 3rd on vault .Congrats girls you all made us proud.

Anonymous said...

Awesome debut for Tamika and Jazminne and looks like Alex is continuing to upgrade - D score 5.3 is encouraging. Speaking of D score Emily 6 on beam and Nikki 5.9 on bars with a total of 14.05. Love your work Nikki.

Anonymous said...

so Blythe seems to think Emily is going for a full-twisting double layout on floor and piking down at the end. Is this the case?

Anonymous said...

Didn't think I'd ever hear the phrase "Aussie trifecta" and uneven bars in the same sentence!

Anonymous said...

I know crazy but they are obviously doing well. Larrissa often struggles in the first part of the year but seems to be doing well at the moment. Nikki has to be a good short at the Olympic team with a DTY and a 5.9 on bars.
So glad to see Emily has upgraded on beam and floor.

Anonymous said...

Anyone know if Emily is training an Amanar?

Anonymous said...

video of alex's floor and larissa's bars, among others, found here - http://www.youtube.com/user/danafan1?ob=0&feature=results_main

Anonymous said...

Could some pleasr explian to me what's an Amanar? sorry i love watching gymnastics but do not understand the gym talk

Anonymous said...

Ha ha looks like I cant type either lol

Anonymous said...

An Amanar is a type of vault.
It is a Yurcheko 2 1/2 twist.
This means the gymnast
1/ runs at the vault
2/ does a round off onto the board so she is travelling backwards
3/ blocks or repels from the vault with her hands
4/ does a salto with 2 1/2 twists in the air
5/ lands on her feet facing away from the vault.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for explaning the Amanar to me in that case yes I think I have seen Em do an Amanar then. But I guess we will have to wait and see what happens in the comp. I wish her and and all the other aussie girls all the best
