Got It Pegged

Australian women's national coach Peggy Liddick shared a word with International Gymnast this week.

You can read the interview here.

"Dasha [Joura] is still in and out of the gym, keeping her feet wet. Again, she has not committed either way and I feel she can always contribute to our team when she is fit."

is this woman still around?

Anonymous said...

Like the last bit of her comment, when she is fit. (Dasha) That hasn't been for a while now. Don't think PL will be there for much longer.

Anonymous said...

I heard Peggy's back in

Anonymous said...

Well if she is you can kiss Australian Gymnastics goodbye cause the women is as fake as breast augmentation. If they have put her back in someone needs to be shot!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Bloody hell! I sure hope not. Surely there's someone better

Anonymous said...

What do you mean "Peggy is back in", the Australian Sports Commission conducted a review, nobody was ever "out". The review determined that the support system and administration is what needed to be reveiwed, hence the new CEO, along with the High Performance centres aligning their goals to be in line with GA's.

Anonymous said...

I have seen some pretty realistic breast augmentations!

Anonymous said...

lol

Yes Peggy has done some good things for gymnastics in this country over the past few years(I doubt anyone would deny that) but, like everything, she's reached her expiry date. Time for some new blood and new approaches!

Anonymous said...

Peggy'sl contract has been extended for a further 6 months whilst they further consider all of the applicants.

Anonymous said...

Not true.

Anonymous said...

While they were conducting a review they advertised the job that Peggy holds. So "back in" is not too far off the mark.

Ted Manner said...

Great interview! Should be interesting to see what she does next.

Anonymous said...

A fairly non-insightful interview really! IG don't really ask the hard hitting questions.

What's wrong with stuff like:

Did the London performance meet expectations?

How will the new elite development structure (Team Future) influence future results? Can you see any influence yet?

What do you think is the next major necessary step in driving Australian HP gymnastics forward?

Do you have any regrets or would you do anything differently if you had your time over?

How do this quad's new seniors compare to last quad's?

Anonymous said...

Yes, totally agree. Some more insightful questions would have been better. I wonder how many applicants they had for PL job? I think a six month extension would be fair, considering all the other changes that are happening within GA. This would allow some overlap and adjustment .But agree that a change for Australia would be a breath of fresh air. We really need to up our game over the next 4 years.
That sadly won't really come from our existing Seniors unless they are able to upgrade a lot.

Has anyone heard about when the comp Season will start for the Seniors? It's good to see some young ones starting of the New Year with AYOF but can't wait to see who is still around in our Seniors. Who moves up next year? Do we have many? I have heard that the camp in January was cancelled and they didn't have a camp in December. Seems a shame for a lot of the Seniors as only 5 girls went to the Olympics, not 20 or more that is in the National squad. Lots of other countries have continued on with comps, maybe that's where we go wrong. How much time off do they really need? By the time they are ready again for comp, the world has passed us again!

Peggy might have requested certain topics/questions be off-limits...

Anon 11:58, don't forget that while this is our end of year, in the northern hemisphere in terms of education it is only the mid year. So while we're all slowing down for year's end, they're all just continuing on. Perhaps that's why comps continue over there, and here they don't seem to? Anyway, they did continue here with National Clubs, it's just that hardly anyone turned up... :-/

Still struggling to understand why we couldn't find not one gymnast to send to one of the World Cup meets post Olympics.

Anonymous said...

I doubt it was the lack of gymnasts. Would it not be the lack of funding?

Anonymous said...

For the next World Cup cycle, Australia can no longer send any WAG to the All Around World Cups (ie. Stuttgart, Glasgow). The deal with qualification to those, are top 8 AA gymnasts at the last Worlds/Olympics earn a berth. Should any of them decline, then gymnasts 9-12 are invited. Should any of them decline, then any gymnast from countries who made the team final at the last Worlds/Olympics can attend.

Since Australia had no AA'er in the top 12 at Olympics, nor did they make team final, they will not be invited.

The only way they can be invited, is if the host nation of the World Cup personally invites an Aussie.

However, Aussies can still go to those Challenger Cup ones (ie. Ostrava).

Anonymous said...

So how do the Aussies ever get back invited to any world cup cycle seems like it's going to be a struggle to qualify next Olympics?

Anonymous said...

The qualification for next Olympics is in 2015 so it's a bit early to call that we will have trouble qualifying! World Cup is not the be all and end all anyway and not many Aussies have participated recently even when we were being invited!

Anonymous said...

Some of the recent World Cups seem to have only had about 8 women gymnasts at them. Is this normal? (I'm only newish to the whole gymnastics thing.)

Anonymous said...

Yes that is the usual number. I think they have reduced numbers to finals - maybe 4 if I remember correctly.
Which I always thought would suck for the person who came 4th in the final!

Jenny said...

4 in finals sucks for spectators!

Anonymous said...

Apparatus only world cups just suck full stop. Outside of worlds and olympics only AA and team are worth watching.

Any news on the coaching jobs in Queensland and Melbourne yet?

Anonymous said...

Queensland gymnastics needs to get its act together !! what a roller coaster ride

Anonymous said...

Gymnastics in this entire country needs to get it's act together!!

Anonymous said...

and why did Qld HPC postpone their open trial days til January ... is there more going on there with coaches///

Anonymous said...

Its no better in NSW. Apparently the coach at castle hill has applied to QAS and he's resigned. Where will those kids go now? Epping isn't a viable choice as I've heard the new head coach there is awful and shouldn't be anywhere near HP gymnastics. Huge resources of kids in NSW with no where to go effectively.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 8.09
I agree. I'd heard about Epping. Why on earth do they let idiot coaches like that near elite athletes? Kids quitting because of that coach. Wasting our chances. Shouldn't the head coach (PL) do something there?

Anonymous said...

Rumours are terrible. My daughter is at Epping. The new head coach Darren is absolutely terrific.

Anonymous said...

Not what I heard. He has a reputation for just leaving clubs after he's ruined them.

Anonymous said...

coaches moving and sadly more leaving the sport is really sad for kids ... coaching is more than the technical - it's the relationship of trust and respect that builds up over years that is really hard to establish as the kids get older ... often it's for that reason alone that they are lost to the sport. Not through lack of talent and persistence ... it's hard to find a coach who has it all - in or out of HPCs. The sport could go leaps and bounds ahead if more support and thought was given into the coaching ranks - geez we know our kids can't progress without them - yet how much grief must they put up with by clubs before they leave ... and then what about the clubs who hire a coach for the sake of saying we have someone then watch as the numbers dwindle - ok enuf of rant ... for now!!!!

Anonymous said...

Is that the same guy who was at QHPC before the jouras? I thought his name was Darren?

Anonymous said...

Yes it is the same Darren.

Anonymous said...

Some comments here are just disgruntled parents with their own agendas. I wonder how many trashing Darren are connected to castle hill gym and are desperate to stop girls from leaving. Make your own minds up.

Anonymous said...

Why what is so wrong with him?

Anonymous said...

I have no direct connection with Darren, but I do remember him from when he was at nationals with the current Queensland juniors (who were IDP 6 & 8 at the time). He attracted a lot of criticism on this board from queenslanders at the time but those girls looked awesome so he must have been doing something right.

Anonymous said...

The IDP 6 Epping girl DIXON -SMITHERS was so good because she was older. The same age girls are doing IDP 10 and juniors. So perhaps Darren is keeping the girls down just to get a win.

Anonymous said...

Or maybe she entered IDP late and had to start off in this level? Girls are ID'd late you do realize? Your comment obviously belies your lack of understanding and ignorance of the current system

Anonymous said...

Anyway I was referring to the girls he had at Queensland - Eden Tarvit, tamika jones, Brittany boffo I think but particularly the first two who were in IDP 6 when he had them and were miles better than anyone else in the level. They were also not old for the level. As for the gymnast you refer to - I don't know her - but she can't be that old or she wouldn't be allowed to compete the level! People need to get over the age argument - if they are good they are good! They will all end up together anyway.

Anonymous said...

Darren only took Eden and Rianna for a couple of months. They were very good gymnasts before he took them and they still are! Why is everyone bagging Darren anyway? What has he done to the Epping gymnasts to recieve such nasty comments. There must be some basis to the rumours. As for 11.12PM, I beg to differ. I do have a thorough undertanding of the current IDP system and I know that even if girls are identified young they do one comp in the lower level before they are quickly moved to the next level. So if you were correct the older gymnast would have done Nationals and then been moved up to the next level. They wouldn't repeat the same level just to get a win. This is just how it generally works. Not talking about any gymnast in particular. There are always exceptions to the rule and regardless,if you still come within the allowable age group, then they are entitled to compete in that level!

It is, again, the gutless cowards who hide behind anonymity that write demeaning & inaccurate malarkey on this blog. It discredits anyone who actually cares about or respects what it takes to create elite real gymnastics or anyone who might actually have some accurate information to share with the community. This blog is a joke if it is not monitored. Only trolls blog gibberish.

Anonymous said...

Said the anonymous poster.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps the person bagging Darren is just that, one person with an axe to grind. I always take comments with a grain of salt if they are particularly nasty. Or maybe people are just jealous of his success? That also inspires a lot of hatred.

Anonymous said...

This blog needs to be taken down. It used to attract informed people - now it's just the nasty and/or ignorant that post. Won't be coming back.

Anonymous said...

We're at Epping and couldn't be happier with the way things are going. We're really happy with the whole team of coaches, including Darren. He's got a great vision for where Epping is going, and is a great coach as well. No idea what rubbish people are saying about Epping.

Anonymous said...

So, as soon as a gymnast from NSW starts doing well nationally you have to bag her coach, question her age etc? Is it too hard to accept that she might be doing well even in NSW?!

Anonymous said...

There are some great blogs that provide insightful comments that provoke interesting conversation. This is not one of those blogs unfortunately. I know that people will complain that Mez does this voluntary and doesn't have time but many people write blogs voluntarily. If you are a blog moderator and can't even be bothered writing actual blog entries as opposed to rehashing old news then perhaps it's time to give up the blog

Mez said...

Chill. "You've slowed down the action so shut it down" is a bit harsh. I'll leave on my own terms, thanks. For my reasons.

If my blog's so awful, start one of your own. That's how I got here. I started one because there wasn't one at all. In fact, I'd rather you do that than deride me here.

I can't exactly report on the state of the program at the moment - we're not competing in anything and unfortunately I was overseas during National Clubs. I never got a response about the questions I submitted to Peggy Liddick so I can't very well make content out of silence.

I can't help the comments that go on (when I've repeatedly asked for speculation about clubs and gymnast movements not to go on here) because I get chewed out if I do try and monitor them. If I tell people to tone it down, I'm told I'm being foolish and fruitless.

If people have ideas for what they want me to write about, I'm happy to take suggestions at my email. Love to.

If you're keen to maintain discussion about who's-going-where or who's-doing-what or who-left where, start a facebook group. It's quick and easy to do, plus you can make it private so none of us have to read your speculation. Or how much how dislike x-gymnast or how much you think y-gymnast is over the hill. Do it there, not here.

And if you must know, I was just about to update on Lauren Mitchell winning an award and a WA comp coming up.

Anonymous said...

Same old excuses. I don't have a blog cause I don't have time. You don't post anything new. Even the award for Lauren and the wa comp is old news now. All this blog enables people to do is get on and have a whine. The only time you comment is when people critisise you.

Anonymous said...

for goodness sake, if youre so unhappy with this blog then stop coming here. we already have to put up with the shit the trolls write, without having to read your complaints as well.

is there any possibility that NSWIS would reinstate the womens program? i know they closed it due to lack of funds/results, but that was back in 98. what would it take to have it opened again

Anonymous said...

Get rid of Aaron Bloomfield. That's what it would take

Anonymous said...

not wrong there..

Anonymous said...

The problem is bigger than the CEO

Anonymous said...

'I don't have a blog cause I don't have time'

And yet you have 'time' to come here, read the comments, and bag it out. Good one.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe the bagging of Darren!

My daughter was coached by Darren as young gymnast and he continued to coach her when she first moved to the VWHPC. He was inspirational, dedicated, motivated - I'm sure that if she had continued with him as her coach she would still love gym to this very day... as it is she has only just got back in the gym in the last year doing gymstar (after a number of years off), will not compete and is very slowly starting to enjoy herself again.

Darren is an awesome coach, and I've seen a few now.

Deb

Do you people not think that the people you are writing about won't be offended by your comments. My young gymnast will be banned from ever looking at this page. Surely you should never write anything that you wouldn't happily say to someone's face.

as a reader who is purely just a gym fan and not linked to any club or gymnast, wouldnt it be prudent to moderate posts that identify anyone's name or job linked to a club? especially if they are borderline/potentially defamatory? surely that isnt unreasonable. people could still vent if necessary without naming names, or you could edit/hide posts like that.

it's great to find a blog that's focus on aussie gym news! i must admit though, i find it a little awkward to see specific people singled out, warranted or otherwise. i guess that's stuff you have to filter through to get to iinteresting news sometimes though!
