On December 13th, Lauren Mitchell was awarded the Winter Strickland Medal for 2012, at WA'S ANZ Sports Star Awards. The medal is awarded "for the most outstanding performance by a Western Australian olympian at the most recent Summer and Winter Olympic Games, as voted by Members of the Olympians Club of WA".
Lauren's coaches, Martine and Nikolai, were also up for Coach of The Year. Her training partner and London teammate Emily Little was up for Junior Sports Star of the Year.
A full list of the gymnastics nominees in all award categories can be found here.
If you're interested in the medal's namesake, read a short piece here.

Well done Lauren! Martine looks absolutely stoked about it lol
And actually, Martine and Nikolai won the Coach of the Year...
Sorry, should have noticed they were winners. Thought they were just nominated. Will amend post.
In the Herald Sun today:
'...Australian gymnastics is in trouble, with participation dropping by 50% since 2005.'
Get your act together GA!!!!!
In that same article someone from GA disputes that with some actual figures (not just a link). In my area gym clubs have waiting lists and are often at capacity or do not have the staff needed to take on more children. We turn many people away as we just don't have the spaces for them. Unless gym clubs are shutting down I find it hard to believe.
Don't believe any of the tripe printed in that poor excuse for a news source. Participation in 2005 was 104,824 it is now over 135,000.
Bahaha, does anyone still read the Herald Sun. For them facts are optional!
Here's the link:

Yep, that's journalism at it's worst. Probably picked up the results of some survey of 100 people.
I just checked the GA annual reports. The participation figure for 2005 was 104,824. The figure given by Rendell of 144,500 is the figure for 2012, so more like up by close to 40%. I would say gymnastics is positively booming! That's why I stopped reading the old media years ago.
My niece couldn't even get into some of the gyms in Melbourne because they are FULL. I would say gymnastics participation is quite healthy at the moment.
That really does reflect the sad state of Australian journalism. And people wonder why they are struggling.
That was dreadful. Possibly even worse than Today-Tonight reporting.
just tried to comment on that story, and got told that my comments may be edited if they are even published at all! what a joke.
It's a strange context to put it into. Boxing, camping, kayaking, running. I had the impression they were talking about sports for adults. They probably researched numbers for gymnasiums and didn't realize the difference!
Part of the reason Australian media is so bad is because half of you are stupid enough to believe what ever garbage they put out. Well done to the above posters for not ready/listening/seeing everything reported as truths/facts.
Congrats on the win!
Actually it was an ABS Survey so it does have some substance to it. But you need to find out who was in scope of the survey and the standard errors to get a better perspective on the results.
It probably either only included adults or had a very small sample size. But the article is so badly written that you would never know.
