Aussie Style

Hope you had the chance to let loose this weekend.

Let the AYOF artistic gymnasts show you how!

Or last year's national rhythmic team!

Do we have a light-footed rebuttal from the men...?

what has this blog become? no posts and comments from bots?

I am trying to keep the bots at bay when I can.

What I can't do is create a huge amount of content when Australia isn't competing much.

I'm still here, don't you worry.

Would it be at all possible to have any more 'whatever happened to...' posts while it's so quiet on here? Really loved the one on Hayley Wright and would be interested in learning about what other past Aussie gymnasts are up to.

I love making them as much as people enjoy reading them.

Just got to find gymnasts to talk about!

:-)

What about the new Australian gymnastic magazine "Stick It " what do people think?

Anyone seen or heard about the Aussie gymnastics movie: A Second Chance? Apparantly you can get DVD copies via gym fundraisers. Does anyone know a gym which is doing this? I'd love to buy a copy.

Draft schedule for Nationals is on the GA website.

If you goggle A second chance you can watch the trailer of the movie. They also have a Facebook page for updates. I watched it and it looks to suit the younger gymnasts.

Has anyone heard about new changes to the code regarding beam and one legged take off rule ??

If you get bored watch Simone biles podium training beam routine from America cup on USAG YouTube. She dismounts with a flip flip full in and makes it look so easy. I know we have a very small population but I would love for Aussie to have a super talent come along soon whose potential is maximised. Like the combo of Trudy McIntosh and mark Carlton was just amazing.

Simone Biles is fantastic. A true all-arounder, too. Her beam seems to be exactly what the new code is asking for as well -- continuous flow, correct technique for connections (no arm swing allowed anymore) and originality in choreography.

Kyla and Katelyn are of course impressive, but they are looking at getting all their leap connections not credited if they perform them as they are performing now. They are also looking at artistry deductions.

Not sure what one-legged take off rule the poster at 10.29 is referring to -- can you clarify?

Anyone know what time the live American cup feed starts our time?

4am Sunday Morning. It is on NBC. If you have no access, get free 7 day trial at unblock us or if I find an "alternative" feed I will post here.

Found two for the last US Olympic Trial, tweeted to Mez but did not re tweet, will try again this time, otherwise check here!

That link only covers the non NBC Broadcast, sorry.

Universal Sports is replaying in full at 6.30pm EST tonight. If I find an "alternative" stream will post as I am one hour behind EST.

Here is a video including Musti on beam http://rutube.ru/video/eb8cbe800a676a137f99ac87351fec59/

Sorry I am not sure what the one legged take off rule is , its something my daughter came home from training with saying something about the take off from leaps , connections that require taking off one leg ... to be honest I have no idea thats why I was putting out on the blog thinking someone might be able to shed some light on what she might mean . I could ask the coach but they are funny about parents asking about what's in a childs beam routine . I was just a little worried that she might be loosing her connections as taking off one leg would make connections difficult.

She might be referring to the new arm swing rule, that is going to make getting credit for connecting two standing leaps difficult. An example actually happened during the American Cup -- Victoria Moors connected a sissone to split leap. The one-legged take-offs are easier to gain momentum without the arm swing.
The idea is that the gymnast is meant to land the first skill with the arms already back, so she can swing up. Supoosedly the FIG is using Aly Raisman's quals BB as an example (around the 0.18 mark):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwT51eZGgzs

Compare to Jordyn Wieber's quals BB (same skill, about 0.54) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwjJoGoREKQ where her arms swing back -- THIS IS NO LONGER ALLOWED. Her switch leap to back pike is also no longer considered connected. Nor her front to back acro.

Gymnast can still get series bonus for front to back connections (eg aerial, BHS, LOSO) but they need to finish the front aerial with their arms already down, not up like Wieber's in the above video. The bonus is also now different for forward-travelling acro connection, differentiating between rebounding and non-rebounding. For example, Lauren Mitchell's front aerial-front tuck connection would get 0.1 bonus as she currently performs it. However, if she did it as a rebounding connection, she would get 0.2 bonus. Think Anna Kovalyova's series, but with an aerier instead of a front handspring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUncQgltKs0

This is an EXCELLENT resource: http://www.gymcan.org/site/files/documents/2013cofpsection12bb.pdf

It's Canada's explanations of all the techical code jargon, using lots of examples.

Look particularly at page 17 and 18 for clarification about the new leap/jump/acro requirements.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything else -- I usually keep a bit of an eye on this site.

wow . Thankyou that was very informative. I will check out the above sites for a better understanding of the new code regarding this and also show my daughter . Thanks again much appreciated.

No problem. The link I gave you above, BTW, was just for the beam updates. If you (or anyone else) are interested in seeing the clarifications for the other apparatus as well, here is the list:
