Skill Thrill

Could the policy of keeping the national team at home to work on skill upgrades really pay off?

We've had our first glimpse of what the women's program is capable of with a camp report out of Canberra. Check out that hit list of new skills!

It's great to see so many new faces, plus some of the old(er) favourites, donning the grips for another year.

But are we able to challenge the rest of the world who are already out there competing and winning whilst we're playing catch up here..

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 8.42 why so pessimistic? Seriously its great to see some of the Aussie girls increase their difficulty, At least we are moving in the right direction, we cant change the past, only move forward, everybody already knows we still have work to do.

Anyone know why Angela Donald wasnt there? Really want her on beam at worlds, she could final

mim said...

hopefully the coaches spend this quad building up difficulty. judges look the other way on execution if the d score is high enough. if we have to sacrifice four years of seriously competing to build the program back up to be internationally competitive im all for it.

Anonymous said...

Agree with mim. There is no point competing internationally at this stage because we simply aren't competitive. There is plenty of time later in the quad to gain international experience, but for that to be of any value, they need decent routines to actually compete.

Anonymous said...

too little too late?

Anonymous said...

encouraging that a few DTYs are now being taught/thrown.

Anonymous said...

thrown is the optimum word there...

mim said...

haha yes agree with "thrown" being key word! it's good to see DTYs on the list but im hoping they are nice, clean vaults rather than being dangerously chucked.

Anonymous said...

Why wasnt Georgia w, Angela d, Emily l or Larissa there? Anyone know how they are going? Any news on Chloe Sims? Great to see her in the photo :). Surely someone has some information? Sorry to be pushy..... frustrating not being in the gym circle anymore

Anonymous said...

And also what about Zoe Lorenzin? She's always got so much promise, hopefully she can stay healthy this year...

Anonymous said...

I'm sure the DTYs are no worse than what other countries are throwing. Australia has to either get comfortable throwing skills that may not be perfect or give up on international competition. Seems like the girls can't do anything right - throw a DTY and you are chucking and being dangerous, play it safe and you aren't good enough to be representing Australia.

Thank you Anon 9:15. Well said.

Mez said...

Anon 9:15 you've hit it on the head and it's the dichotomy I encounter wading through comments every other day. Although admittedly I don't love the term "throwing" or "chucking" in terms of the skills, as though little consideration is put into the process and training of them.

I am sure our coaches wouldn't put them in a position of putting out something with confidence veering on the side of baulking, or execution veering on the side of dangerous.

Georgia W is not training at full capacity and will not be competing anytime soon

Anonymous said...

NSW had a IDP trial yesterday any news?

Anonymous said...

results are up

Anonymous said...

What about Amelia McGrath? Is she still training?

This is probably old news - I am not quite up with it - there were twins training at waverley emma and ??? are they still training? I think they had a lot of potential.

When you say Georgia W is that Georgia Wheeler who trained at MLC?

Anonymous said...

Wow. You have been away from the news for a while. The Collister twins, Rachel and Emma retired quite a while ago - maybe maybe 2009 and 2010 respectively? Amelia McGrath I think finished up about the end of 2011 and yes Georgia W refers to Georgia wheeler who is now at HPC

Anonymous said...

it's not the gymmasts its the coaching their.

Anonymous said...

They're showing their education right there.

Anonymous said...

Nice nice :)

Anonymous said...

Yeh! hope girl from comp O.K.

Anonymous said...

Nice, enjoyed it

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the updates on Rachel and Emma...yeah, I'm not up with it! Shame they retired.

Very big shame about amelia mcgrath!! She had anawesome beam routine as we all know. Hit it at Pam pacs as well....anyone know why she retired? I know MLC had some staff changes or something. Is Michelle DeHighden still there or is she coaching at Waverley?

Good on Georgia W for continuing! I know there were high hopes held for her....and she kind of didn't deliver at the Olympics came closer (I don't mean that in a nasty way)...good on her for sticking with it. Would be great to see her get an impressive vault.

Anonymous said...

The high performance program at MLC has finished, Michelle is doing some consulting for GA?

no more funding for trp & MAG?????

Anonymous said...

Didn't gymnastics get same money as last year?

Anonymous said...

Apparently? So is there any gymnasts doing international assignments this year at all?

Anonymous said...

probably just worlds

Anonymous said...

anonymous May 6th - wondered where you'd heard that there isn't going to be any funding for trp or MAG?

Work order is out for the Vic Elite Trial 1 at Jets. (It's called Trial 2 as it is the National stream second trial.) Who's getting up early for the IDP 8-Senior session on the Saturday morning?

Anonymous said...

Only 1 senior?!?

Anonymous said...

It is interesting to see the vertical development within the programs from IDP 3 through and how much care is taken to maintain participation numbers from the lower levels through to IDP 8 and 10 and beyond. Some programs seem to have a huge drop out rate. Maybe a solid and gradual skill development program, competition success together with good parent communication to temper expectations may be an answer to achieve this.

Anonymous said...

NSW IDP STATE starts this Thursday, no list yet!

Anonymous said...

Can anyone post the link to Vic trials?

I think it is important for the new rules to be enforced. When a gymnast reaches the minimum required standard for a particular level then they should not be able to compete the same level the following year. This would ensure that gymnasts do not stay back for a second year in a hope that they will finally win something (another name for that would be cheating ) and it would hopefully make force gymnasts to push their skills a little harderbin order to make itmto the next level. This is the only way gymnastsnin Australia are goingnto be competitive with the restnof the world.

So Gymnastics Australia have done the right thing by introducing the rule but now they MUST enforce the rule if they are to gain any benefit. If you reach the minimum requirement, you must NOT compete the same level the next year. If we say it enough times then maybe they might actually enforce a rule for a change. Or will they? Time will tell!

Anonymous said...

Where is the reference to this new rule? If it is as you have stated then it is a big mistake in my opinion. There are many reasons why a gymnast might repeat a level which have nothing to do with cheating or the desire to win. Just because they have reached the minimum standard one year does not automatically mean they can pass the next level the following year in time for nationals trials. IDP 8 to IDP 10 is often an 18month program - meaning the gymnast won't be ready for 10 until national clubs - even longer if there have been injuries. It is madness to take a year out of competing though as competition experience is essential to eventually be competitive internationally. If the outcome of competitions is so important then allowing repeating gymnasts to compete "unofficially" might be the answer. Seriously though, in the end they will all be juniors together, repeating that level until senior so I can't see what the big deal is. If you are referring to national levels then I have to say I can't comment on what is fair as I have had little to do with national stream. It seems to me though that the same idea could apply - levels often take more than a year to pass depending on the ability and training if the individual.

I am all for fairness in gymnastics
There is nothing worse than people competing down a level, training skills 3 levels above them or doing more hours than allowed
Be honest people!

In a similar vein to Anon 9.15 (April 28 ) ...'you are chucking and being dangerous, play it safe and you aren't good enough...' My daughter is doing IDP 6 and these words are familiar. My daughter will be competing for her first comp and I do not understand the logic of competing with a very low start value and great technique vs. higher start value with 'less than perfect technique'. Even though the skills are there she is not allowed to perform them, is it still possible for her to place well if all others have the higher start value.

As a new parent, can someone explain or provide skill value info for IDP 6 routine and how it all translates on the day because to me, it seems inevitable that she will not do well purely based on the lack of competitive start values.

Thanks for any input !

Anonymous said...

There are not many bonuses for IDP 6 so I wouldn't be overly concerned. If she does the routines cleanly then she will have as good a chance as anyone else. When you get higher in levels, that is where the difficulty comes into play because the difference in difficulty can be huge.

will Peggy be at any comps this weekend or is she overseas!

Anonymous said...

anon 10.38 - why not ask the coach? After all, aren't they doing what's best for their athletes??

NSW IDP 6 RESULTS???

Anonymous said...

Nadine Epping Y 1ST, Jaiden CCE 2nd, Grace MWG 3RD, Sophie MWG 4th I think!

Anonymous said...

Yea! Go Epping:)

Anonymous said...

What comp? Who all went?

Anonymous said...

hahaha! lol anon 2.47pm, lucky to have such a wonderful gymnast like Emma at Epping and she needs to compete overseas with the head coach. So lucky to have a zeng to take over who is billiant! Epping High Performance won Idp5 and idp6 had and idp10. numbers are down across the board due to luck of financial port from gymnastics Australia. Sad for the sport but NSW has supported Darren 100 per cent.

Still no work order for yesterday's comp at the VWHPC and no results either. Can't even find results tab on the GV website.

Anonymous said...

The results won't be up because there is no one in the GV office on weekends. I don't know where you are looking but if you look under Great Events on the website there is a big button the says Event Results.

Whats the goss behind Alysha Koloi leaving MBC for Waverley? Big move, but a good one probably.

Mez said...

Anon 2:52 Probably not of any consequence to you?

I've said in the past multiple times that I don't appreciate when this blog gets used as a water cooler for speculation or offhand remarks about club movements/changes.

Mez, the Australian gymnastics forum has started up again so perhaps you could point people there for off-topic discussion:

Thanks anon 6:16. Will check it out.

That's awesome that there's a message board again to help keep off-topic stuff in order. Well done to whoever kickstarted it.

I just hope people will still observe courtesy and common sense there.

how the heck did emma get to Russia?? thought GA werent sending anyone anywhere? why spend the money? who (coach) went with?

Anonymous said...

I'd say she went on a plane or two... ;-) My assumption is that she was representing her club and not officially representing Australia. I doubt very much whether any of GA's money was spent. Obviously she, her coach, and family felt it would be a beneficial thing to do. Good on them for being proactive.

Anonymous said...

Well said. There are programs (and parents) out there who will support their athletes to get the development they need - good on them.

Anonymous said...

who the helll made epping a high parformence center???

Any results /videos from the last trials in queensland, Vic, Western Australia? ?
