Feat of Clay / That's Watts Up

Two commendable results out of the Youth Olympics in China this week.

Flippin', flyin' West Australian Abbie Watts qualified, and then finished, 6th overall in the women's individual trampoline event with stiff competition from China and Russia. You can see a brief profile of Abbie from before her departure for the meet here on Perth's Today Show.

Pacific Rim vault gold medallist Clay Stephens (who I learned is cheekily nicknamed "Nemo" by teammates due to the fact he only has one pectoral muscle!) fell short of qualifying for the men's all-around final by one place, but is confidently through to the vault final on Sunday. Clay popped by the Nanjing athlete's village video booth here. Best of luck to Clay.

Taking to the floor soon will be our rhythmic gymnasics representative, Tara Wilkie!

WAG worlds trials are on/have ben last couple of days. Any news? Any major outs? I'm dying to hear something but gym aus has posted nothing.

I saw on Instagram that Emily Little was there.

I think the team has to be

Godwin AA
Brown AA
Munteanu VT, UB, FX
Mitchell BB, FX
Monckton VT, UB, BB
Miller VT, FX

it looks Larrissa Miller is out.

I believe Georgia Godwin is out too, an ankle injury. I saw her on crutches. Not looking like a strong team for worlds. Hopefully they can pull it together.

what do you mean not a strong team? and who are you suggesting makes the team strong Georgia Godwin?????

Godwin is a massive hole. In a 6-5-4 arrangement solid 4 event gymnasts are extremely valuable. Not to mention 6.0+ on beam and strong vault.

IT'S A BLOODY BIG HOLE!

Well said 3:19 touché

I think Peggy is out

Munteanu can fill that hole easily don't worry we have a good mix they should do well : )

Is brown even trialing? I noticed she was not in a comp leo either. And where's Leydin?

Anonymous said...

Munteanu is way behind Godwin, events only at best

Anonymous said...

Leydin was in a boot not that long ago

Anonymous said...

peggy was in a boot

still no news? When will GA publish team?

After the second trial next week

camp is over though, is it not? - why would they have another trial after having two days of trialling already? there is nothing about an extra trial in the selection criteria.

Its called the back door trial where they can secretly slip the girls in that didn't attend camp. Its called stalling so the injured girls they really want will hopefully recover enough to get in.

So Godwin and Miller are still chances. IDK, if they are well enough, they deserve to be on the team so I have no problem with this.

we can only hope peggy gets the boot

not until after Rio

Mitchell and Georgia RB have joined Miller and Godwin on the Injury petition list.

What's a bet all 4 make the team. Here's hoping they will be well enough and prepared in time for Worlds.

I don't get it, what does that even mean? I mean, if you injury petition, does that mean you don't have to trial next week?

I assumed 'injury petition' meant they advanced to the trial next week even though they didn't attend camp last week, but does this now mean Mitchell/Brown might make the team without trialling at all?

IDK, if they can bust out the required skills for the 2-3 routines then they should be on the team. If it means they'll water down, then it's more logical to just take a b-team and give them the experience.

Don't judge if you don't even know the extent of their injuries! Obviously they expect to be well enough to compete, otherwise they wouldn't be petitioning.

There is no point in them pushing and pushing when they are clearly important parts of the team. They have earned their stripes. I'd rather they don't aggravate the injuries and work towards being healthy for the actual meet.

FIG just released nominative entries. They were submitted by Sept 4 (less than a week ago)

The seven listed are:

Munteanu
Mitchell
Miller
Godwin
Brown
Monckton
Vivian

This is from the FIG site;
A final note on nominatives

Nominative lists are not final, and can be changed at any moment. Final lineups must be confirmed 24 hours before the competition begins. The lists published on the FIG website will be updated as changes are made to the rosters.

So nothing is final.
