Love that Emily Little and other gymnasts are apparently being given the opportunities this year for OS comp experiences!
Love the announcement from Gymnastics Australia that a centre of excellence for MAG has reopened at the AIS with up to TEN scholarships for gymnasts to cover accommodation and training!
NOT loving that WAG continues to be under resourced and run on an adhoc approach - scattered around the country at various training centres and with different head coaches with their own different methods, and with comp assignments handed out on an unexplained basis.
NOT loving that the reality of WAG is opposite to the aim of encouraging the talented gymnasts to stay.

Well said! Its just so political and this politics is affecting hard working innocent gymnasts.

It will be interesting to see what Emily competes. A DTY could be her ticket back to a worlds team. Floor is her next best event but I assume Larrissa, Lauren and Georgia G will be on future teams and can fill that event, that is if Georgia is ever actually selected for a team.

I suspect that with Lauren not competing bars Emily probably won't be able to be three eventer unless she gets back all her old skills and then some.

An AAer with a DTY and good bars would be invaluable to the team right now. Hopefully someone can come along and fill that role.

Just seems a certain degree of sexism operating both in Gymnastics NSW and GA that they would allow another high performance centre to open for mens at the AIS and still leave the girls floundering after the men came a pathetice 26th at World Champs...

The provision (money and coaching)of a HP Centre for MAG but not WAG has been a long term policy of Gym NSW (Not sure of other states), and continues to be an entrenched position. Not sure why?
It seems contrary and discriminatory given that the numbers of WAG participants far out-ways that of MAG. So in theory are WAG fees paid to the state Institutes of sport supporting in some small way the HP Centers for MAG, when no such provision is supported for WAG?
It would be nice if there was equal support for both genders of Artistic Gymnastics.

I saw a quote somewhere recently that went something like this - men are hired on the basis of their potential, whereas women are hired on the basis of their performance - so in effect, WAG has to show a history of results to be considered for funding, whereas MAG just has to promote a possibility of achievement!!! Sad if true.

Men get far less funding than women. Have a look at the figures from last year for example. Seniors such as Lauren Mitchell got $20000 funding. Georgia Godwin $6000, juniors such as Aya Meggs $6000. The list goes on. Men - the average male senior gymnast and there was only a couple given funding was $2000. Pathetic. No junior male gymnasts got any funding. Now lets have a look at trips. Wag trips to America for training camp are non existent in the mag program. Comps for experience are again non existent for the MAG program unless they fund themselves. Nadia Commenici etc are all fully funded for the girls. Men are only funded for the big competitions such as Commonwealth Games, and World Titles etc.

The only way that the men could get this funding was by moving to the AIS. Where the hob knobs didn't have to actually hand out cash funding. The powers to be would only provide residential, food and training just so they didn't have to give out cash like they do to the womens program. They refused to give men the cash because if their poor performances. So it may look like an advantage to men but trust me it is not. The women still get so much more funding than the men. You are kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

So if you want to make things equal like one of the previous comments well YES lets do that. Because the MAG gymnasts would be over the moon with equal funding.

That's funny since some Mags are just leaving for future cup!

So when is a scholarship not a scholarship - when it applies to gymnastics! lol
The provision for 10 scholarships implies by definition of the word a financial component for its recipients. If not, then it should be called something else - 'training assistance'?
It would seem the funding pie is used very differently by MAG and WAG and by funding, it is not limited to a direct money provision to targeted gymnasts, but rather the whole training structure - facilities, coaches and support staff such as physio, motivators etc.
And direct funding to high profile athletes is not necessarily going to give you the best returns - remember the huge funding directed at Thorpe's attempted return to competitive swimming some years ago which was given at the expense of a number of other promising swimmers?
i'm sure that the grass is always greener , but it would be helpful if a comparable approach was taken to provide adequate funding for BOTH Mag and Wag in a system whereby the issues raised above wouldn't be issues - no perceived favoritism on either side of the divide!

So $6000 vs accommodation, food training fees? Senior/Junior MAG gymnasts would be over the moon for that deal?

It is hard to believe that $6000 would cover all those expenses for the Wag gymnasts - but maybe you meant the actual gymnasts and not their parents and family?

I guess the amount provided to Lauren Mitchell is a small reward for the huge amount of publicity (resulting in increased Wag numbers)that she generated by winning World Titles and medals, and i would hope that similar recognition was/is handed out to Mag gymnasts with similar achievements.

The amounts 'given' are laughable in any event! They don't go any where near to covering all the hard work/tears and sacrifices necessary from the gymnasts and their families to reach their dreams.

Maybe we should all heed the advice of Gymnastics NSW latest advert campaign of 'see where gymnastics can take you' ....in other sports!!!!

If only my child didn't LOVE gymnastics ...

No WAG spends hundreds of thousands on overseas trips. MAG would love that priviledge but that will never happen unless they start winning medals. They are not sending the WAG to the AIS because the elite gymnasts are much younger than the men generally. That AIS scholarship is only for those finished High School. If we took the top ten gymnasts in WAG half of them would still be in school. That money allocated to i dividual athletes is just personal funding. It does not include the scholarships from their HPC. The more chance of getting a medal, the more money the athlete gets.

So the MAG gymnasts would therefore be happier with a proposed scholarship offer which excluded accommodation (gymnast could either pay to stay at AIS or find private accommodation offsite) and instead provide an amount of around $6000 'personal funding'?

The provision of a centre of excellence for targeted training for the elite gymnasts under the continued guidance of the Australian Head Coach- and at next to no cost for the gymnasts should be something welcomed by the gymnasts.

The scattering of gymnasts across a variety of state based HPC and club based training centres, with occasional training camps to try to foster 'team spirit' and occasional input from the Australian Head Coach does not provide the optimum result for either the gymnasts or Australia on the world stage.

If there is a concern about relocating high-school age Wag gymnasts to Canberra, then the facility should be set up in say Melbourne near the headquarters of Gymnastics Australia, and with a large enough job market to allow the gymnast's families to find employment.

Good luck Emily Little. What a hard working beautiful person you are. You deserve to be in Mexico and to achieve your dreams. And I am glad you made the choice to go back to Gymnastics. I know you live independently, working shifts nights & days to survive and to be able to run a car to take yourself to training. All because you have a dream to represent Australia again. You do it hard and I am very proud to get the chance to Cheer you on again. I totally agree there is not enough money for either WAG or MAG Gymnast. And I believe this is because of Government funding provided or lack of it. I have also been under the understanding that in WA (I do not know what the other states do) MAG get very little funding a lot less than the woman gymnast. But even saying that the woman do not get enough financial help. This puts a lot of pressure on both MAG and WAG families. These kids give up a lot at a very young age to maybe get the chance one day to represent Australia.
With all that said, Emily Little I do hope you get out of this trip to Mexico what you want. And all that hard work pays off and you come back with a big smile on our face. That other people appreciate what you go through to be where you are now.
