Did larrisa fall on Bars her score was a 13.25?? i think she has an out side chance of placing top 3 tonight. I think from night 1 she was ranked 4th or 5th! if she can fix her bars and stay on beam she has a shot. Go Riss!
She has definitely improved from what she did at States particularly on beam and floor. She is doing well.
Hi Mez,I know you like to keep an eye on the VWHPC website - unfortunately i cannot update it at the moment but we have created a Facebook page if people would like to keep up with news and photos from Perth. It is an open page and the link is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Victorian-Womens-High-Performance-Centre-Gymnastics/127927163915092Hope that helps some fans out
VIC wins IDP6 team from NSW and WA. Well done girls
Larissa fell on her stoop? half just before her jaeger and had to repeat. I was impressed with her vault effort.
Did Qld not send any IDP 6's? they had 4 girls compete at states, thats unusual.
Qld had IDP 6 girls but maybe not enough to form a team
Just wondering if there are any updates on how the Int 8 and Int 10 are going
QLD has 3 IDP 6 girls at Nationals - Tuuli Kallinen from AGDA, Rianna Mizzen from Robertson and Grace Sheppard from Emerald
IDP 8 Team1. NSW 2.QLD 3.VIC IDP 10 Team1. VIC 2. QLD

Lauren gets the senior award.I forgot to say earlier, Ash Brennan pulled out of tonight with an ankle complaint. I was seriously bummed to hear this :(Brinds
I assume Emily's juniour international award is for last year. Such a shame about Ashleigh
Huge congrats to GBo! :) So excited to see Georgia continue to flourish on the Aussie elite scene 'tho I selfishly keep hoping to hear her name connected to a US university as well.Sorry to hear of Ash's ankle...seems we're none too healthy as a country at the moment. I suppose better to have injuries now then closer to Worlds & C'Wealths, if you must have them.Congrats to everyone who competed!Becka
I am so happy for Svetlana and Mary-Anne! Surprise silvers, but great :) Both are such lovely gymnasts.
Does anyone know of a junior (I think) who hurt her arm last night during the team competition. Is she ok and which gymnast was it?
Amelia was credited with a 5.9 on beam - is this an upgrade?
I am kind of sad for MLC. They seemed so confident they would finally getting an athlete to Commonwealths earlier in the year but Wheeler just did not have a good meet. She seems unable to deal with the pressure right now, maybe more time and she will improve her consistency.
Yes, I think Amelia had an upgrade - roundoff double pike dismount. Lovely.I thought she did back handspring flip?
GA have put up full results..well done.Senior AA results Junior AA results
It was Monica Sloane who apparently dislocated or broke her elbow, I'm not sure. She was absent for AA tonight.Agreed about MLC - wheeler had a better night tonight than on team final night but still not stellar. McGrath is lovely but I think just needs to keep working at it.Waverly have come back with amazing strength - I've been so impressed. Who knew Georgia Bonora ever had trouble with her ankles and wasn't sure if she would try for CWG? You'd never know!Brinds
I think Mary-Anne could get a BB/UB spot now - She had a 5.9 on BB and a 5.6 on bars, quite respectable. She hasn't been consistent, but we know how little prep she has had. What about Shona? She clearly was not looking great, but I dunno, I always have confidence in her for some reason. And Larrissa? Has tanked bars both nights but I think we still need her for bars. She showed at worlds 09 that she can hit if well prepared, and she has time.
At CWG there are normally three AAers and two competing as apparatus specialists. Given Maryanne's performace on bars tonight it could give the selectors reason to consider her over Larrissa.
Just to throw a spanner in the works - based on tonight and last night's scores, could Peggy possibly take Sophie Budack as a vault specialist?
I fear Larrissa has blown her chances. Her bars are great when hit but then so are Mezs. I think both are probably as unhealthy as each other too, injury and body wise. Mez's bars were rad tonight. Larrissa was clearly hurting tonight though.Maybe the team will be Lauren, Georgia, Shona for AA and Mez for UB/BB and emily for vault and whatever else she is mildly good at. Although I don't see her as worlds material myself.I guess this means Ash is out of the running too, even though during team final she was looking good.
I have no idea who is going to be on the team. I am thinking maybe Lauren, Emily and Georgia AA but who knows and when it comes to apparatus specialists I am now confused. I understand worlds are right after CWG which makes selection more difficult but this is the only trial for CWG and it is still a fair way from the competition and a lot can happen in a couple of months.
Mary-Anne is ok on bars, but come on, 14.175 is not a specialist score. She should have at least a 6.0 DV to be considered for a bars spot. I think Larrissa is a better pick. I don't really know why you would take Sophie unless she can show a DTY in competition, which she hasn't. It would be a sorry day for Australian gymnastics if we took someone with a full twisting yurchenko as a vault specialist! Shona is obviously capable of much more than a FTY,. but will she upgrade? I'm confused about what the intentions of the Waverely girls actually are. Did they show all their planned skills this week?
Shona is boring but reliable as an all rounder. I think they'd take Shona as an all rounder over Emily.I can't remember how sophie did at vault during TF but I think tonight was better, resulting in her sixth placing. However one night of good vaults does not warrant her being put on a team of the calibre of CWG or worlds, although her floor was also pretty strong tonight. Still though it only scored in the high twelves.
How's Angela Donald beating all of the seniors except the Australian Champion? Fantastic. If only they hadn't changed the age for Commonwealth games!
Do the maths. I would take Larrissa with a 6.4 routine over Mary-Anne with a 5.6. That is a huge difference in scoring potential. Huge. Mary-Anne's bars might be great to the eye, but a 5.6 is really a pretty average d-score on bars. IMO Larrissa needs to stop AA training and focus on getting a monster bars d-score score. That's where she is needed, and if she has 8 tenths over the next best bar worker, that is much more valuable than the advantages to be gained on the other events. Another FTY is hardly going to make a difference.
Emma Dennis didn't have a too bad night tonight. I was impressed to see her in fourth. I can't remember the exact scores but I don't think she was far behind Shona.Brinds
It is hard to pick - MaryAnne had a better championships than Larrissa but is the more injured of the two. Larrissa self imploded but is not as unhealthy as Monckton.
But the issue is that Shona did not show particularly clean or difficult gymnastics this week comapred to what she has done in the past. She only did a 5.0 vault for example. If she is only going to be able to offer that come October, then Emily with her 5.8 DTY will almost certainly make it over her. Problem is, how do we know where Shona might be come October. The girl has grit and determination. If she got her DTY back she'd prob make it over Emily, but she doesn't seem to be in great form right now, so who knows what to expect.
yeah it was monica slaone who hurt her elbow. apparantly she broke it so she went home!congrtulations to all the girls to night.angela donald was very solid in everything!Amelia was pretty good too but she needs to keep working her beam is looking great though. svetlana was very nice. Emma Nedov showed a very nice floor routine and vault . her beam was great except for the fall on her dismount!Mary anne is looking beautiful too.it's such a shame about larrissa's bars i really hope she can get it by sunday!!
See I love all these up and coming juniors, they are beautiful gymnasts and great beamers, but I can spot major vault issues a mile away. If I had to label the 5 most promising I would say Amelia, Angela, Georgia Rose, Emma Nedov and Nikola Chung. Only Nikola has a decent vault, the rest are still doing layout yurchenkos less than a year away (except Emma) from their senior debuts. That is a huge issue.
As long as they are fit I assume that Lauren and Georgia B will be competing AA but other than that I am not sure. Anon 12:47 I agree that Larrissa should focus on her bars at least for this year. She is not going to make it as an AAer this year and Australia needs a good bar worker.
I will be very interested to see who is on the team. Lauren obviously a no brainer. By what Peggy said in that Age article Emily is almost a certainly probably more so now with the inconsistent performances over the last couple of days. Georgia B national champion has to be on the team. Sunday's apparatus finals could confuse the situation even more.
Where was Georgia Rose Brown on day 2?
Do you guys think then that ashleigh or emma have a chance?Anyway they'll surely have a camp to see how everyones going in September or so. The girls will know that's their last chance and they absolutely must be fit and ready by then.I don't know which I dislike more - Shona lacked even more sparkle than usual this week but emily is nothing to write home about. Although she has the WAIS rep behind her which will help her chances I bet
I think GRB was too injured to do AA
On the VWHPC facebook page they said Georgia Rose was very sick with the flu night 1 do she must have opted to sit out night 2. Poor thing, especially since she has been improving so much lately.
"Unfortunately Georgia Rose Brown was suffering terribly from the flu, competed very bravely, but was not at her best level which she showed in Germany and Victorian Championships. Clare O’Donnell injured her ankle in training the previous day and did not compete."
anon 1:16 the camp on september is for worlds trials only. Nationals is the only trial for cwg. Are you suggesting that the selectors are biased in favour of wa gymnasts
Commonwealth Games is 5-4-3 format in the finals right? If that's the case I'ld bringa team of Lauren, Georgia, Shona as AAers and Emily and Larrissa as the specialists.Even if Larrissa isn't looking overly consistent right now if she were to fall in TF the 5-4-3 format would mean we wouldn't need to count it. Her scoring potentialis much higher than Marryanne's, a 14.175 doesn't warrant being taken as a specialist over someone who has scored 0.5 higher than that in the past, at Worlds not less!
No but I still feel that a Pac Rim medallist yet absent from nationals Emily will get the nod before a crashing all over the place Larrissa and a lack lustre Shona
Is Naomi Russell still competing? Someone said she was training well awhile back.I think Shona will be on the team - she's too consistent to be left off.
I think it would be stupidity to take Monckton over many gymnasts. She is still not fully recovered and is more of a liability than anything at this stage. The team should be Lauren, Georgia B, Ashleigh, Emily and Larissa. Larissa will get her bars by Com Games. Emily should really be a lock considering she is the only one at this point in time that has a DTY.
Do the stats guys.Georgia Wheeler beat Monckton on day two overall. Her vault is stronger than Monckton (she has a front pike as well as working her yurchenko full and double) her bars is respectable and more reliable and her floor is way better than MM. She is injury free and has more chance of improving than MM considering she is already competing the higher skills on floor. She has no problem getting her vault (she scored higher with a layout yurchenko on first day than MM).But then again, stranger things have happened.
Everyone is saying that Monckton is injured, not fully recovered, and what not. But who care, because she still showed up at Nationals, and competed.
I think this is one team, we can leave up to Peggy to pick, there are so many options neither of which is much better than the next. I believe it would be best to go with the experienced girls where possible...would love to see Emma Dennis on the team though!
anon 11.20The comments about Monckton being injured are about whether she would be a good choice for the CWG team not anything else.Personally, I agree with the consensus that she is not ready for that assignment yet. Any gymnast that competes watered down routines and still has major problems with injury competing these routines is simply not ready.I actually though her bar routine scored way too high on the second day. It's a nice routine but not great. Her feet are quite horrible in everything she does - what is the story with that? She only just made her tumbles - not looking like she is going to be able to up the difficulty quickly. Her vault was low and was not dynamic. As previously stated GW beat her on the second day and looked much nicer.I too believe it would be a sad day in ozzie gymnastics if Monckton got on the team over Emily, GW or Larissa. She's good but not that good.
Was Geargia RB sick with the flu? Most people when they have the flu can't get out of bed...... Georgia sat on the sidelines for the first half hour or so, then she was running around the stands for the remainder of the night with another girl ? Clare O. I am sure there are many gymnasts that compete at different times not feeling well.....Emma C had the flu at Pac Rim but she was able to compete. Was she pulled because she did soooo badly on day one!!!!!!
nasty comment, nasty sentement, nasty person? Competing at Pac Rim not feeleing well is a little bit different to Natioanls. Gymnasts get injured when they push it while not feeling 100%. Possibly not being in contention played a part in the decision not to continue but so what! And as for not getting out of bed when you have flu - I don't know what sort of life you lead but you obviously have no responsibilities. That one made me laugh! Stay in bed because of the flu? I wish!
Yeh seriously, get lost if you're going to accuse people of faking injuries and illnesses. They don't train for 32 hours a week to turn up at nationals and give up if things aren't going right. I can't believe you feel the need to slander a 15 year old girl.
Ummm hang on... Didn't MM get second last night and GW fifth? Why are you all saying GW beat MM on night two? She didn't!
Yes Georgia W did out score Maryanne last night. GW scored 52.775 and Maryanne scored 52.675. The AA score for the girls was thursdays and last nights scores combined. That is why Maryanne beat Georgia W because she had a bit of a meltdown on Thursday night. I think GW is to inconsistent to be in the CWG team at the moment. She scored less than 50 on thursday night.
Yes. I am sad for Georgia Wheeler because she obviously has tremendous talent and potential, and I can't wait to see her progress over the next couple of years. Unfortunately CWG trials came just a little too early. I think she just needs a little longer to develop and get her upgrades consistent. She could make the worlds team becasue she has time to get those bigger vaults and perfect a strong bars routine. But indeed, I don't think she has done well enough this weekend to earn selection for Commonwealths.
I see by looking at the GA photos that Zoe also went across to perth to watch - nice for the girls to have the support of each other.
I agree, but putting Maryanne in over GW would also be a mistake. I don't think MM is ready for the competition either.I think the team should be Lauren, GB, Ashleigh, Emily and Larissa. Larissa has same start score on floor as MM and beat her on the first day on floor and she has alot more class and is light years ahead of MM in elegance. to anon 11.41, I agree about the feet. They were quite ugly. Is it something that the AIS coaches teach the girls as I seem to remember little Naomi having the same problem.
I like a team of Lauren AAGeorgia AA Emily or Shona AA (Both have 2 vaults and are decent AAes, whoever can offer a DTY and the better AA score will make it) Larrissa (VT,UB) - it is not a travesty putting up a Y full at CWG)Ashleigh (BB,FX)
Does anyone know what Georgia Bonora is planning to upgrade her vault to? Is there a chance she could be planning a double twist, or is she going back to the 1 and a half?
yes yes yesI like your thinking. That would be the best team and the most obvious. Lets just hope that Larissa nails it on Sunday, then I think she will be a lock.
Thats probably a fair enough team. With England and Canada sending B teams I think Australia only really needs to be solid. If Ashleigh could also perform a Tsuk full if it was needed instead of Larrissa's FTY if it was thought it would provide a better score. From what I have been reading it seems like it is highly likely that Emily will be in the team, she has a DTY and whilst ins't outstanding on the other apparatus' she is fairly consistent and by the sounds of it her injury isn't too serious. I don't like Shona being left out but she was disappointing to say the least at nationals and if Ashleigh is going to be in the team then I am thinking they're probably isn't a place for Shona.
I am very surprised everyone seems to be picking ash over Shona. Although I guess ash did beat her on night one. Is that what everyone is basing it on? Ash has a better beam than shona right? Does she beat her anywhere else? Floor for example?I am just shocked to see people think Shona won't make a team. I mean I'd prefer Ash anyday but Shona just always seems to get favoured because of her consistency. She is a yawn to watch though and I can't help but think that she is just hanging out for Stanford now and that's why she's not making much of an impression this week.
I think the reason that people seem to be picking Ashleigh ahead of Shona is because on night 1 Ash outscored Shona on every apparatus except bars and if Larrissa is on the team then it is unlikely Ash's bars will be needed.
I would say that Ash is just as good as or better than Shona on floor. She did win floor at Vics and had Australa's highest score on floor in the team final in Beijing. Shona in probably better than Ash on vault and bars but like it has been mentioned she may not have to compete bars and Shona seems to be struggling on vault at the moment. I don't think people are trying to be critical of Shona and she may well be on the team I just think people are giving their opinion.
With all the talk of watered down routines and poor preparation and low difficulty or whatnot, you've gotta give Mez credit for competing through pain.Look at Ashleigh Brennan - she was withdrawn on the second day due to doctor's advice about exacerbating her injury. Monckton (and Miller no less) went out there and competed all four in what I'm sure was niggling foot pain made worse by landing issues from day 1.Girl is back doing all four at Nationals after major surgery, what, three months ago? Four months ago? During which time her training was greatly limited? (Bear in mind it's been that way for what must be a year now) Imagine what an additional three months of recovery and preparation now nationals is over is going to do. She was spotted chatting to Peggy after the competition. I think expectations and intentions for the pre-Commonwealths period were made clear between them. Give the girls some credit, anons. For several of them, making it through two full days of all-around competition was clearly the main goal; above and beyond making the dais or cementing their place on a team. This perspective will surely be seen as "just making excuses, just settling for mediocre performances" but there are two sides to every story and reasons behind every gymnast's performance outcome.
I heard on the gravevine that MM has been telling people that Peggy has told her she is a lock for CWG.Is this girl really full of herself or has she been given the nod?
or maybe the grape vine is full of crap
Ahhh girls who are competing this week are reading all these comments.Give them a break. They're doing the best they can. It's not their fault that they're injured. If you can do a better job, you go out there and get on the beam instead.
lol at the MAM comment. I don't believe for a second that 1) Peggy would think it appropriate to tell an athlete she was a lock2) That MAM is a lock 3) That MAM would be foolish enough to then go and brag to people What was probably a compliment about a good effort in the competition must have ballooned somewhere into this ridiculous story.
I am actually quietly confident about our chances this year at worlds and CWG. Reading around on various boards it seems people are now writing off the Aussie team but only those who follow closely would realise how far from peak condition a lot of these athletes actually are, and that these scores are not reflective of what they can achieve in any way. As long as we have some luck with injury recovery I think we certainly have the strongest potential vaulting team we've ever had. The main issue is bars, we really need Larrissa to step up there, and for all the girls to work hard on improving their e-scores even if their routines are not extremely difficult. Our beam will be strong as usual and floor decent.
A lot of news articles I have been looking at about the meet imply that the team is all but certain to be LaurenEmilyMaryAnneGeorgia with Shona and Ashleigh fighting for the last spot. I really hope they don't just ignore Larrissa in selection like that, it would be very foolish.
i think you are right. i get the impression lauren and emily will be in the team as long as they are fit. Georgia won nationals easily so she has to be in the team. peggy was full of praise for maryanne and rightfully so she did a great job. i also hope they dont forget larrissa but she needs to get her bars in order to be any chance
"Was Geargia RB sick with the flu? Most people when they have the flu can't get out of bed...... Georgia sat on the sidelines for the first half hour or so, then she was running around the stands for the remainder of the night with another girl ? Clare O."Are you for real?!?! She is not 5 and i hardly doubt she would have been "running around" I don't know about you but when i have a cold i usually can't breath out of my nose and whilst i can go to work i would not be able to do 4 gymnastics routines. And to suggest she was pulled because she did badly - shame on you.
anon 6:45. "Ahhh girls who are competing this week are reading all these comments."Perhaps that may be a little of the problem. These girls should be focused only on their performances not general blogs like this (which I love) during the live in week on nationals!!!!
Just sayin'. These things would be hard to avoid for teenage girls. They all live on facebook and have phones. What else would they be doing when not training or getting their muscles massaged? Even before now we all know that a lot of gymnasts read this blog very regularly. It wouldn't be nice to read some of the comments said about them, and I know a lot of the girls are not very happy about what has been said about them. People don't know all the details and the full stories as to the performances put in this week so I don't think people should judge so harshly. I only hope the girls use it to their advantage and the nasty comments only drive them to greater heights and they prove you all wrong and silence all the critics and naysayers.Don't give that Commonwealth title away to Great Britain just yet!
Great Britain doesn't compete in the Commonwealth. I think you mean England. ;)Speaking of whom, apparently England are considering sending their top team now... don't know how seriously they are considering it, but it seems it's still an option.
I am wondering why MAM is so strongly favoured here for a CWG spot. What else has she done prior to this comp? I don't mean that in a nasty way because Mez is a good, hard working gymnast, but I can't think of any other comp result that would support her selection. Is this her highest 2 day AA score?Brinds commented about Emma Dennis in her notes and I wondered about her too. She finished only 1.2 marks behind with a poor day 1. She posted the highest vault score and the 2nd highest beam score. We know she is building from having a screw in her foot last December. In the Worlds trial last August, she placed 3rd with a score of 106.65 which gained her selection onto the successful European tour team. So we know she can produce a competetive score when it matters.I suspect Peggy will look beyond these latest results to select the strongest possible team. A team which I thing will be very competetive. ;-)
You say Emma finished 1.2 marks behind MAM with a poor day one. MAM fell twice on beam on the second day, and had lots of other wobbles, landing deductions and missed handstands also.
