Youth Olympic Games: EF Day 2 LIVE!

In half an hour, the final day of gymnastics competition at the Youth Olympic Games will kick off.

Check previous posts for links to the live webstream. Tonight we'll be seeing both Angela Donald and Brody-Jai Hennessy in action. Goooooooo Aussies!

****************************************
Angela will be up second after Tan Sixin! She's in lovely green and gold.

Oh, I am EXTREMELY pissed off. Moments before Tan Sixin mounted the beam, my computer decided to say "Hello! Windows is now shutting down!" with no provocation at all. I then couldn't get back on the internet. So I've missed most of this beam final, aaaargh! Why does my computer always pick the most inopportune moments to go kersplat!?
My apologies to EVERYONE for not being here to detail Angela's routine. She's currently sitting in 2nd (and texting!)

With one competitor to go, looks like she's guaranteed a medal! Just depends on which colour!

And... and... and... the results are in...

***CONGRATULATIONS ANGELA DONALD, YOUTH OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALLIST ON BALANCE BEAM!!!***

VOTE 1 ANGELA DONALD!

Some small screencaps from the medal ceremony, made with love by yours truly...

It's time for the men's high bar final... Brody Hennessy's time to shine!

He'll be up second.

How YOU doin'...?

Does a very short warmup - a few giants then his release (a HUGE one, caught well, it'll make or break the routine... its name has slipped my mind! Um um um um... Voronin?) before hopping off. Cheers for him in the crowd can be heard.

Oh dear! A heartbreaking routine! Nice Geinger to start, but then completely misses the Voronin. Lands on his back. Gets back up, takes a while to get his momentum back in the swings, catches a tucked Kovacs. Big stumble forward on the double layout full dismount. Finishes with 11.7. Good try, Brody!

I have been enjoying the live feed and on demand video highlights from the Youth Olympic Games, but the commentators’ commentary has been a source of great amusement. Here is my suggested drinking game (soft drinks for the under-age!) in relation to their rather insipid and un-technical commentary:

Drink a mouthful

1. Either commentator describes a vault as a Yurchenko (but doesn’t actually describe what flippy turny thing they did coming OFF the vault - clearly they have only managed to work out that if there is a cartwheel, then it's a Yurchenko).

2. American commentator interrupts the other commentator.

3. American commentator yells his commentary (does he think it makes his commentary more exciting?)

4. American commentator says, "nicely done".

5. Either commentator mentions that Komova has her own website.

6. The only fault commentators can pick out is a 'step on landing' even though there were other problems to see.

7. Either commentator say something so spectacularly bizarre that you can’t believe they’ve said it. “They look like little flying birds on the uneven bars”, etc, etc.

8. Either commentator mentions that Natsumi Sasada was devastated to miss out on bronze in the all-around.

9. Either commentator pronounces someone’s name wrong (Tess Noomen instead of Moonen, Farlotta Cerlito two of my personal favourites).

10. Either commentator describes a gymnast as a “dark horse” or some member of royalty “princess”, “queen” etc.

Finish the glass

11. American commentator (a) yells (b) “nicely done” and (c) interrupts the other commentator, all at the same time.

12. Either commentator mixes his metaphors (dark horses marching across lines?)

Additions very welcome :)

D 6.0
E 8.450

Anonymous said...

Thanks is she leading?

Anonymous said...

2nd after 5 but Tan Sixin went first.

Anonymous said...

With Komova out of the hunt Angela could get a silver! I think only Ferlito can outscore her from the girls left.

Anonymous said...

Komova fell

Anonymous said...

Good job on her double pike too!

Anonymous said...

It is great that she has a difficulty of 6 already

Anonymous said...

Great difficulty level but also the consistency! Imagine in 2 years time what she may be able to do!

Anonymous said...

Angela has a medal yay!!!

Anonymous said...

The double pike was nice. It looks like Angela intends to connect the aerial to the BHS LOSO so that's another 0.2 to her D score.

Anonymous said...

Bronze but still a medal, well done Angela!!!

Anonymous said...

Did everybody's live streaming cut out during the last competitor? ARGH! Did she get silver or bronze?

Mez said...

She got bronze!

Anonymous said...

What a talented all round nice kid!! Congratulations Angela

Anonymous said...

Did Angela make Floor final?

Anonymous said...

Woohoo! Congrats Angela! Australia is so lucky to have you!

:D

Mez said...

I thought she was a reserve for the floor final? Can't remember.

If she is, and if Komova pulls out due to injuries aggravated by her beam falls, Ange might just get in.

Anonymous said...

she's the second reserve i think...i don't think she'll be competing tonight. she wasn't expecting to at least.

Anonymous said...

though she wasn't expecting to win a medal either and she did! so who knows :) anything can happen!

Anonymous said...

Aren't you glad the beam isn't 'uneven' like the commentator keeps saying, like beam needs to be any harder than it is!

Mez said...

I know! At first I thought it was a little slip, but then I heard it a second time and thought "really!?"

Anonymous said...

Well done to both, a great achievement!

Having watched Angela's routines, will someone please get Waverley a proper choreographer? Her floor was soooooo slow-moving and most of it was just standing around with an occasional arm wave.

We know Angela knows how to move in a lovely fashion given her beam but the current floor choreography is not doing that ability justice at all. It makes her look timid and bored.

This was a great comp overall! I was quite surprised by the level of some of the juniors I had never heard of before -- we saw some gymnastics that was more interesting and innovative than we have seen for a number of years.

I suppose the current seniors have been held back a bit by the restrictions of the past Code -- these new girls are working to a whole new set of rules, and I like like it!

The Italian girl -- gorgeous! Tan Sixin -- way improved from Pac Rim and so consistent! Komova of course...the girl with the full back on beam...and Angela of course!

Can't wait to see all these girls meeting again in the future, with teams behind them.

Are they going to hold this comp again? How frequently are they planning to hold it, if so?

Anonymous said...

It will happen again in 2014, in China I think.

Anonymous said...

I think it would be exciting and also motivating to maybe even include a team competion for the next youth olympics. Just a thought :)

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Aon @ 1.36!

And I agree with the last Anon -- a team comp would be awesome!

Has anyone seen any video yet of Ange's finals performances?

Nanjing China, to be exact, I knew it was China but wasn't sure of the city.
By the sounds of it the IOC wants to keep going with the Youth Olympics so even if there isn't a team comp next time as it gains momentum it could become much bigger.
How exciting is Angela?
To be injured basically all of last year, as mentioned by someone after nationals she wasn't ready for PacRim but now national champ and a Youth Olympics medallist.
A 6.0 on beam, maybe a 6.2 with connection bonuses already.
An article I read suggested that between now and national clubs she will be working on getting her FTY ready for competition and a second release on bars so that will really up the difficulty on vault and beam.
Now that Angela is doing so well you would think she would get access to better choreographers too to improve her floor.

vault and bars, not vault and beam I meant.

Can anyone confirm that Westfields has secured a new Russian coach and will now become the NSW HPC?

Anonymous said...

The AIS coach ???

Anonymous said...

HOTTTT news if true. They needed something to offset the AIS.

Anonymous said...

Well Valeri is Belarussian, not Russian, isn't he? Too bad they couldn't snap up Nicolae Forminte, he's looking for work....

Anonymous said...

Westfields may have a new coach - I dont know - but I can assure you they are not the 'NSW HPC'. It has been many many years since they have produced a decent gymnast past IDP 6. Currently Epping YMCA followed by Castle Hill would be the leading elite centres in NSW. Epping has Emma Nedov and a coupe of IDP 8 girls that are strong. Castle Hill has Celeste Loo.

Anonymous said...

but what other girls do castle hill have with talent coming up?? more or less talent than westfields ??

Anonymous said...

I believe the comment from ANON 5.49 said “becoming a HPC” not is an HPC. But since I am no expert what is the difference of an HPC v Club having an elite program like Epping Castle Hill and Westfileds?

Anonymous said...

A high performance centre is not a club - it is set up by the state associations so that gymnasts can follow an elite pathway - especially if their original club does not have an elite program. They don't have any National levels only International levels. Clubs that run an elite program choose to do this along with their National program - some clubs are better at this than others. High Performance Centres don't receive points for the gymnasts at National Clubs as those points go to the girls' original clubs

Anonymous said...

But Westfields have national girls training, will the girls have to find a new club when it becomes the HPC??

Anonymous said...

To be clear:
Westfields is NOT going to the NSW high performance centre!

Anonymous said...

To anon 1.46
As of the January next year, Westfields WILL be the NSW HPC. This is not a rumour, it is FACT. Things like this don't depend on what gymnasts a club has. get over it and be thankful that NSW will have a HPC.

WOW the mill is turning well in this thread!!!!! Whats next the world is square!
