Junior-ary

Happy 2013!

Two exciting events are coming up in Aussie gymnastics. See the stars of the future in action!

In Sydney, the Australian Youth Olympic Festival that launched names like Chloe Sims, Dasha Joura and even champion diver Matthew Mitcham onto the world stage, takes place on January 16. Australia has some dynamites in the lineups, which you can see here.

In WA, the Dreamlight Perth International Challenge kicks off on January 25th showcasing the best junior gymnasts from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. A great promotional video on the Aussie team by Gymnastics WA has gone up here.

Stay tuned for news, notes and results!

So we invite gymnasts from other countries to compete but not from other states other than WA

It is an invitational competition run by gymnastics wa - they can invite whoever they want. I'm not sure if it isn't being managed by the technical committee (volunteers). On top of which, how do you know that they didn't invite other states?
It's so typical in the gym community that when someone stands up to make a difference there are always those waiting to cut them down and diminish their efforts!
All state associations have vision statements talking about improving participation, standards etc of gymnastics in the state - this is one way WA is trying to do something about it.

I do know that the WA volunteer organisers had real trouble with red tape and higher ups in inviting guests to their comp... basically invites (or approval) were not sent out/sent late by someone higher up :( I believe they had a lot of interest from speaking with different coaches from other countries and a few clubs. I think initially it was supposed to be an Australian team and then a second team or a Wais team. It was timed so that a team could compete AOYF then Perth the next week, since it is a long way for many, it is worthwhile to add the extra comp, but hard for teams to organise when they don't receive invites promptly.

That's a real shame for our competition-starved gymnasts.
