ETA LATER:

An extra hour and a hi-def channel makes such a difference. Great quality footage, great insightful commentary, great kudos to individual AA and EF winners, great audience member shots, great opening fluffs... but where on earth was Russia!?

You can now watch the One coverage at YouTube. Many thanks to Asha76.

Congratulations All!
Especially Emily Little and Sam Offord!! Beautiful to watch your expertise, focus and beauty on ONE TV. Go Guys!!!

Could someone upload so those who were at work can watch?

We don't get 'One' here - anyone know how I can get a copy of the broadcast?????

I thought it was great coverage and I hope that One HD will cover more gymnastics events in the future. It would be great if they covered Nationals like this but I guess it would be too expensive. Still great to see gym back on Aussie TV.

I too liked the coverage. Although what was with Emma Collister's bizarre (non) acro series on beam? Surely someone with such great tumbling ability doesn't need to be sacrificing 0.5 and can throw in a back handspring back tuck. Does she have a mental block or something?

It's on again at 10am tomorrow for those who missed it

Anonymous said...

whoops i meant it's on MONDAY at 10am for those who missed it

Anonymous said...

Emma Collister has backflip issues.
This is why she doesn't do roundoff flip on floor - only roundoff

Anonymous said...

emma collister can't do backflips anywhere i don't think - i have never seen her tumble a round-off flip sault only round-off. same goes for beam

Anonymous said...

Such a shame, it is so limiting in terms of what she can do then. Didn't Rachel have similar issues?

On the topic of the broadcast, I liked it when Liz listed Dasha as an absentee. That's gotta be a good sign that she hasn't been written off.

Anonymous said...

Rachel does have the same issues

Anonymous said...

So that would also explain why they do Tsuks instead of yurchenkos. I agree that it is very limiting not to have bhs. Makes beam combo dismounts almost impossible. It will also limit what tumling runs they eventually can do. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do an F element out of a roundoff.

Didn't Ash Brennan develop a mental block on her yurchenko? I never understood why as her 1.5Y was lovely backin 2006 and I thought that she'ld be the first to bust out a DTY.

ah, the memories!

Thanks for the random nostalgia nugget!

I used to have this comp on tape, now lost for all eternity. :( I used to love Valentina Barabach, and would always try to imitate Danielle Kelly's scale on beam. Those were heady days, my friends!

You can buy the footage from GA (both the 98 mins and 48min) programs.

The Aussie broadcast was put together by Jump Media. Well done guys. Let's hope that it rated well and OneHD wants a bit more. Great news that they reƔired )that is promising).

Anyone have news from QLD states tonight?

How on earth did the Collisters get up to this level if they can't do a BHS? I think Oz gymnastics needs to evaluate the way they pick kids at 3.

Anonymous said...

hey June 27, 2010 4:59 AM,thats such a rude comment to make! many gymnasts cant do certain things or have fears and the collisters have a fear of BHS but that does not limit their ability (their still doing double arabiens and full ins on floor). look at cheng fei, no AA because she has a fear of heights on bars. On floor, bross and liukin do not have 1 BHS in their floor routine! give the girls a break and what to you mean by '3'? is that the age you think kids should be picked at because that is so unfair to say so as all kids develop and peak at different ages. sometimes the ones that are not selected until they are older approx. 8-11 are the ones who do better. look at Lisa skinner, didnt start elite until age 11 and i could go on about others to. im sorry if im sounding harsh but i wish people would stop bagging gymnasts and rather praise them, even if they do have quirks and perks that you, yourself dislike.

Anonymous said...

Anon 10:35...what coverage can you buy from GA? Do you mean Pacific Rim?

Anonymous said...

many gymnasts do develop blocks on certain moves but the problem for the collisters is that this has been around for well over a year and it will become more difficult for them to regain that skill as they lose that flexibility in their back. Don't you need to have both a fwd/swd and a bwd acro series on beam to gain full CR

Anonymous said...

For a long time Hollie Dykes did all her high level tumbling skills out of a round-off as well, until she was able to fix her technical errors.

And she ended up competing a DLO later on.

What a horrible, mean, and ill-informed thing to write on a public blog.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree that it is a big problem and really unacceptable for an elite gymnast. I hope they take the time to address it before they are seniors.

You can't put an athlete out on the floor where it is uncertain if they will have their acro series counted, you just can't afford to risk that 0.5. The Collisters seem to have the power to be doing double layouts and double doubles but that aint going to be happening out of a roundoff.

To not be able to do a bhs, arguably the most fundamental move in elite gymnastics, is just ludicrous and I can't believe nothing has been done to correct it.

Anonymous said...

I see people feel the need to defend them against criticism but come on, it's not like people are bagging them for not doing a side somi.

A back handspring is a huge part of gymnastics and a key to many upgrades and combos and without it they are going to struggle to get up their DV.

To suggest that it is no big deal is stupid because you clearly don't understand how critical it is as a foundation skill.

Tsuks on vault aren't as easy to upgrade as yurchenkos, they don't fill acro requirements on beam, they wont be able to take advantage of the ff+ff+double pike 0.2 bonus, and most importantly it is unlikely they will be able to do their power on floor justice as they won't be able to do the tumbling they could do otherwise.

To me this problem is something to fix rather than something to brush aside and laugh off as a perk.

Anonymous said...

To the person who made the comparison with Hollie Dykes, does that mean that the Collisters are adressing technical difficulties relating to BHS in training? If so, I don't see that there is a problem. Just a matter of time before they sort out whatever is standing in their way. If not, at least Victoria has to terrific National Level 10 contenders.

I think this whole idea of fear and mental blocks is an exceptionally complex issue; especially at this level. I don't think it is fair to impose any more pressure on these gymnasts by criticising them on blogs like this because this is unlikely to have any positive bearing on their ability to work through these issues (after all, bloggers like us are meant to be their support, not their nemesis!) As a gymnast who had a swag of mental blocks myself, it sometimes does come down to being simply more inventive in the way you compose routines and sometimes this works for or against you. I think in the case of the Collisters though they are working within a code which welcomes skill sets that do not require a BHS. I think we should just give them a chance to prove they are worthy of their spot on the national team...whether or not they start competing BHS's! I'm sure there are many new skills in the pipeline that will make them more competitive...

Any news from the QLD State Champs yet?? Who was competing and how they went?? Did Larissa do AA or just bars.

Tianye will be good if she can clean up her form, she is tumbling very well already. Same with Godwin, who would be great if she had dance and presentation ability. At least she has time to work on it.

Larrissa's floor had lovely dance but messy tumbles. She used to have a great front double twist, I miss it. She also had a good double pike. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zir0ZFASbiY

Ideally she could do a double arabian, front layout+ front double twist + split jump, 1.5+front layout full, and close with double tuck, because she is going to get hammered for that 2.5. That would get her into the 5.6-5.7 range. Fingers crossed she will do great at nationals after her injury problems.

Anonymous said...

From what I've heard Larrissa was aiming for a running front layout full + front double twist and a 2.5twist + stag to dismount. She's a much better twister than flipper. So based on what she's done in the past I could see
Dbl arabian, front full + double twist, triple and a 2.5 + stag being the aim. Might be a bit ambitious and it is risky having a triple and a 2.5 in the same routine.

Anonymous said...

Larrissa was aiming for more difficult tumbling, but from what I've heard, her heel injury flared up again a few days ago, so she couldn't do everything she is capable of. She was actually limping somewhat after finishing her floor exercise last night. Still, she seems to have made great strides over the last three weeks. If she continues to improve as she has lately, I'd say she's a shoo-in for the Commonwealth and Worlds teams.

Anonymous said...

I think her bars alone has given her the guarantee. There is no way we can get a respectable bars total without her. Basically she and Lauren are already in, it's just the rest that need to be decided. I think it is going to be difficult.

Ashleigh
Georgia B
Georgia W
Shona
Emma

IMO the best team is

Wheeler (could be replaced with Little depending on who is looking better)
Bonora
Morgan
Mitchell
Miller

If Wheeler has the DTY she beats out Emily for selection because she has much better bars. Ashleigh might miss out becasue beam is already covered by Mitchell, Morgan and Bonora.

For 5-4-3

VT
Bonora (1.5ty)
Mitchell (DTY)
Wheeler (DTY)
Morgan (DTY or Pod)

UB
Bonora or Morgan (5.4+)
Mitchell (5.6+)
Wheeler (5.6+)
Miller (6.4)

BB
Miller or Wheeler
Morgan (5.8)
Bonora (6.1)
Mitchell (6.6)

FX
Miller
Morgan
Bonora
Mitchell

No need for all the petty people to worry about Rachel Collister's BHS.

She has officially retired.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do Rachel!

Anonymous said...

Mmmm yeah well they'll just never make it further than being junior national champs in a weak, post Olympic year then will they?

Anonymous said...

I am not sure if the commonwealth games still do it this way. They may have changed since Melbourne. But in Melbourne there were five in the team with four girls competing each apparatus in qualifications and finals.

Australia had three gymnasts doing AA (Chloe, Hollie & Monette) and Naomi VT/UB and Ashleigh BB/FX. The rules may have changed but I know at one stage a country could have three gymnasts in the AA final. England and Canada had three gymnasts in the AA final in Melbourne. Australia only had two because Monette withdrew. If the rules are the same then there are likely to be three AAers and two apparatus specialists.

I assume Lauren will be competing AA. I think Georgia B will be a good chance to get a spot. Other chances include Shona, Emily and Georgia W. If Larrissa goes at a UB specialist then that would leave the option of someone to compete VT/BB/FX. I think Ashleigh isn't hopeless to make the team in this situation because she has a solid vault and she keeps improving her beam and floor then she could be a good chance.

There are of course many other possibilities but I just named a few.

Does anyone know who won Queensland Sr and Jr State Titles?

Anonymous said...

wow! I think some people on here need some therapy! If Rachel has officially retired - who is the official source of this information? I don't think the critisism was personal (except maybe that last one about their achievements - that was just catty), more just that it is hard to understand an elite program missing such a fundamental skill. If it was fear, you would expect fear of other skills too. It is a big shame because obviously tumbling as they both can from a round off, imagine what they could do from a RO BHS.
About the commonwealth games - I am also interested in how this will work this year. Maybe someone could take the time to explain?

It is official

Queensland state championship winners:

Senior International: Larrissa Miller
Junior International: Amaya King-Koi
IDP 10: Georgia Godwin

I've sent a report to Mez. Hopefully she will post it soon.

on commonwealth games and worlds

don't count out there being a few younger gymnasts on the team. maybe Peggy and the selection squad will want to put 2 or 3 younger gymnasts to give them a good experience.
from what i've heard, commonwealth games is a very enjoyable experience and very close to what they'll experience at olympics, albeit without china or america but still very challenging and therefore, rewarding

Anonymous said...

I don't think anyone is discounting younger gymnasts for commonwealth games and worlds. Anyone competing at commonwealth games must be born 1994 or earlier like worlds now. Even though it would be great experience for younger gymnasts I think the main aim of Australia this year is to win the team title in Delhi and I assume Peggy will pick the best team available regardless of their age. I know the future is very important but I don't think it would be fair for a gymnast to miss out just because they are too old. I think it would be a good idea for GA to consider making the CWG and worlds teams a bit different. Australia only has to finish top 24 at worlds to qualify for 2011 and it would also be good experience for younger gymnasts.

Anonymous said...

Exactly, if the younger gymnasts can prove that they are better than the older girls, fine, but Wheeler has not been consistent at all and Emily is limited by her poor execution scores right now. We saw at Vics and Trial 2 that the Waverley veterans were beating Wheeler even with reduced difficulty.

Given their SV are similar, it would be wisest to go with an experienced team who you know can hit, especially given the competition will be much stronger than in previous years.

Anonymous said...

So which girls were born 1994 or before and could make the team?

Anonymous said...

The team will come from

Budack
Monckton
Wheeler
Bonora
Morgan
Dennis
Brennan
Little
Mitchell
Miller
Greeley

Toss in Zoe Lorenzin and there is your 12 person worlds training squad too.

Anyone know what Naomi's plans are? Now that she's not competing at nationals, won't she have to wait a whole extra year to compete, or does she have a chance to make the worlds training squad?
