That's Gotta Hurt

News update courtesy of Tkatchif-your-Lucky:

The shoulder injury that caused Philippe Rizzo to withdraw from the Pacific Rim Championships turns out to have been more serious than initially thought. He has recently had surgery on his shoulder, which now puts both Commonwealth Games and Worlds in doubt for him this year.
Get well soon, Phil!

He was at NSW states on Saturday in the crowd supporting his team mates. The announcer made him get up at one stage and wave to everybody.

Best wishes for his recovery

Gym WA posted the results from our elite trial held a couple of weekends ago. Lauren Mitchell's best score was on beam with a 15.500 and a difficulty of 6.6. She attempted her double twisting yurchenko but the score was low so maybe she fell on it. Her difficulty on floor was 5.8.

Nikki Chung did very well, it seems that even though she had falls she still scored in the league of the best Victorian Juniors. She has a very good full twisting yurchenko and got 14.2. She also got a 13.7 on bars.

Wow- places 9-12 at 2011 worlds aren't guaranteed a spot at the Olympics- places 9-16 will duke it out at a qualifying event in early 2012.... Godd for Aus or bad? Hopefully we make top 8!

Top 8...
Yes, It's impossible to know where we sit right now!
The countries coming to mind that can (and probably will) place above us are:
1. USA
2. China
3. Russia
4. Romania
5. Italy
6. Japan
7. UK
8....... Australia?
Then of course there's Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands?

I think France and GBR are above us possibly- its hard to know that we'll be in the top 8 is which case we'll have to have our athletes peak again in Jan of 2012 to firm our spot... will definitely be interesting to see how this plays out!

A lot depends on how the girls develop. For example, Georgia Wheeler has low d-scores right now, but she clearly has tons on potential to put up a bar routine above 6 and a DTY or better in future. I think the recent results are quite promising, it seems the 1995 girls are coming along nicely, some now hitting the 14 mark and others consistently going above 13. It's all about building up slowly. In 2012 we will get Emma Nedov and Naomi Lee. They are already pretty good for their age so could help if there is an unexpected lot of injuries or retirements.

I just hope we do better retaining girls this quad than last quad. It was so sad to see all those girls quitting when they were such great gymnasts. Hollie Dykes, Chloe Sims, Melody Hernandez, Jasmine Webb, Hayley Wright, Alyce Arrowsmith, Casey McDonnell- it was such a shame.

Seriously, in 2007 we were probably about 5th in the world but we all saw how that turned out, qualifying 11th after that meltdown at worlds. You never know what's going to happen.

Great Britain and France are definstely above us. I reckon we will make top 50 at least.

I hope we make the top 50. I think this could be bad for Australia. It will probably be difficult for Australia to make the top 8 but I suppose you never know. Australia has been in the top 12 for a fairly long time now and even with the meltdown at Stuttgart they girls still finished 11th. If the girls finish 9-12 then they will have to be ready early in 2012 for a major competition.
