No Sir That Ain't Right.

Coverage of women’s sport makes up 9% of all sports coverage in Australian television news and current affairs, while male sport makes up 81%.

Horse racing alone receives more airtime that all women’s sport combined, making up the other 10% of all coverage.

Appalled?

Thanks for linking this -- it's something I feel quite strongly about. There are so many other issues of inequality in sport as well that the article didn't even touch on, like access to equivalent prize money, sponsorship, scheduling and marketing.

A few friends and I attended the AIS world trials today. I was very pleasantly surprised at the good gymnastics that was on display. It is a shame we don't hear about what these Aussie gymnasts are doing. Lauren had a 6.8 d score on beam and 6.4 on floor, her new floor routines is so original and she really performs it. Her all around score had to be over 59 today as she hit all four apparatus. Georgia Rose Brown looked very steady as well, her bars are technically beautiful, same with Larrissa who hit a 6.2 d score and 14.85 final score. They did not flash scores as the judges were going to reveiw a video later, but we did see the final score sheets. Ashleigh Brennan had a great beam with a 6.1 d score and a 14.65 finals score. Maryann had a 5.8 d score on beam with a 14.5 final score. That is all I can rememeber off hand, but we did take some video so will try to post later. I can't belive we got to watch and video the trial, but we did.

Oh. My. God.

Anon above, I LOVE YOU!

Yayyyyyy, sounds like our girls are peaking just right!

Do you have anyu comment to make about Emily Little, Wheeler or Chung?

Any sign of vault upgrades for Mary-Anne (or anyone)?

Thank youuuuuuuu!

Anonymous said...

oh that would be amazing if you could post video !!! and thanks for the info !!!

can anyone suggest how Mitchell would have had 6.4 on floor?

Anonymous said...

yes I would be interested to hear about Chung and Wheeler because they are on the borderline of selection if Miller hit bars...

If Lauren does:
Arabian double pike + jump
Full in pike + jump
2 1/2 punch layout
Double pike + jump

and 4 D dance elements, she will have 6.4.

She has previously competed the arabian d-pike and the layout out of the 2.5, so it's not out of the question.

If she did whip, double arabian (tucked), punch front she would get 0.9 JUST for that one pass, so that's also a possibility. If she did that and brought back the 2.5 punch layout, she would only need 2 C dance elements and 2 D dance elements to get to 6.4.

Judging from previous credited start values, Mary-Anne and Ashleigh can even improve on these beam results potentially.

Although, perhaps they have deliberately taken out a connection or changed the composition for the sake of stability? Whatever, if they are getting scores like that then the coaches are doing something right.

So excited to see these girls at Worlds! I think we have a real chance now at team finals and first round qualification.

To the Anon who brought us the report: did the trial start on beam, the way we will at Worlds?

Anonymous said...

so nobody knows any placings in the aa and individual apps?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if worlds will be shown on fox?

Anonymous said...

worlds team: lauren mitchell, emily little, ashleigh brennan, georgia rose brown, maryann monckton & larrissa miller. reserves are niki chung and georgia wheeler. they started on beam both days. lauren did whip to tuck arabian to stag jump, full in to split jump, two and half twist to front layout, double pike to sissone and some d level leaps.

Anonymous said...

does that mean wheeler is non-travelling?

Anonymous said...

anon at 6.57, do you know what Mary-anne vaulted?

Anonymous said...

Haha, I guessed pretty well for Lauren's tumbling!

Quite happy with the team, especially considering our injury woes. Bit weak on vault (unless a double from MAM), and slightly nervy on beam (probably no Larrissa there). Floor selection will be interesting; Brown has been outscoring Miller with a lower valued routine. Bars is a no-brainer (no Ashleigh).

Wait, actually GRB has been credited at 0.1 high DV on floor than Larrissa. So Larrissa probably just bars, which means:

Lauren: AA
MAM: AA
Emily: AA
GRB: AA
Ash: VT, BB, FX
Larrissa: UB

For Lauren to have gotten a 6.4 score on floor she would have had to had to have competed the tumbling mentioned before, her triple wolf turn (Mitchell), split leap 1.5 (Gogean) and a switch leap full. She didn't get the switch full credited in last year's floor final so hopefully it's improved. The Gogean looked iffy earlier in the year but I'm sure they're working on it.

The 6.8 on BB indicates that she competed the same routine as last year but with a full turn after the triple wolf. She was competing a double wolf into a full earlier in the year. She could go as high as 7.0 if she replaces the double pike with a double arabian which she is training. She's still counting a C skill as one of her 8 skills so they could potentially upgrade a bit more.

Just stay healthy, girls!

Anonymous said...

Actually now that I see that Lauren did a sissone out of her double pike if she were to do the aforementioned dance elements I said earlier she would have scored a 6.5 so she either didn't do the triple wolf or the switch full.

Maryann said in an interview with the Couch Gymnast that she had 6.0 D scores for both BB and UB before her injury so I'd expect her to be around that number for worlds.

Anonymous said...

the big question is - has MaryAnne upgraded her vault? That is where we need it big time...

on a side note I'm really happy to put a beautiful gymnast like Brown out on the world stage to represent us. I'm sure international judges will love her.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I think we will have one of the prettier teams in Tokyo! And also some of the best choreography. I've even come around to Lauren's music -- I quite like it, now.

Was Brit the only other girl trialing? What a shame for her.

Based on the trial results, Nikki would be the traveling reserve. She outscored Wheeler on every apparatus and even outscored Miller on bars. Fantastic effort for her after an arm injury earlier this year. Unlucky to miss out on a competing spot but I guess we really do need Millers bars. Fingers crossed for consistency.

Anonymous said...

So Nikki and Georgia W are the traveling alternates and britt is the non travelling?

Anonymous said...

they just posted the results on GA, finally they realise people are interested!

No upgrade for MaryAnne although Ashleigh did a 5.5. vault. Mary-Anne's results a little disappointing, like watered down floor and poor bars.

Miller only hit 1/2 bar routines and bombed on floor so I don't know if she really should be on the team.

So this is what we're looking at:

VT
5.0 (Monckton)
5.0 (Brown)
5.5 (Brennan)
5.8 (Mitchell)
5.8 (Little)

UB
5.3 (Little)
5.6 (Brown)
5.9 (Mitchell)
5.9 (Monckton)
6.2 (Miller)

BB
5.2 (Brown)
5.6 (Little)
5.8 (Monckton)
6.1 (Brennan)
6.8 (Mitchell)

FX
5.1 (Brown)
5.3 (Miller)
5.5 (Brennan)
5.5 (Monckton)
6.4 (Mitchell)

That's a great comeback for Nikki -- I'm so pleased for her!

Do you know what her bars D score was?

If she continues to outperform Miller, it's quite possible that she WILL compete in Miller's place. We haven't seen an official team announcement yet but it's not unusual for the selectors to name seven girls and wait to designate the alternate 24 hours before competition. Hope that doesn't happen (can't be nice or conducive to focussed training to feel one's place is never secure), but nice to know we have an option if Miller isn't fit for some reason.

That being said, Miller has a real knack of coming good exactly when she needs to and performing well in team situations.

Results are at the bottom of the page
http://www.gymnastics.org.au/?Page=22029

Miller did much better on night one for bars,14.85, than night two, 12.75.

Chung has a 5.5 D scroe for bars.

Anonymous said...

GRB kicked butt! What a rock. She is one of those athletes I think who when fit has no problem hitting.

Anonymous said...

They have named the team on the GA website - Nikki and Georgia W named as alternates. All the scores are there too. Nikki did outscore Miller on bars but isn't close to her on difficulty. Our best hope is that miller starts hitting more consistently and I believe she can.

We need to remember and be conscious that Larrissa has had a big training change this year as well as a number of injuries. With this said. Larrissa has always performed when it counts for Australia. Always. Her performance at last years worlds exceeded people's expectations because of her inconsitencey at times. Youtube her beautiful floor she contributed there as well! I have complete faith in her.

Let's move this to Mez's announcement post above?

ASH HAS A 1.5 Tsuk!

The media is this country is rubbish. The coverage doesn't even reflect what people are interested in. I saw a study after the last olympics (I think it was the Sweeney report) that showed that more people have an interest in gymnastics than golf. Yet golf still gets craploads of coverage and gymnastics gets next to zero. Hopefully in the future we will be able to get all our coverage from the internet and these idiots won't get to choose what we get to hear about.

The local seven news crew came and filmed State Clubs, Caloundra Queensland this weekend. They filmed my daughter's bar routine and interviewed her after (she was hugely excited). Unfortunately we were at presentations when the news was aired and missed watching news to see if the story made it through and it is no where to be found on the internet.

It was nice to see the media there and taking an interest and valuing athletes who many of them will never go on to bigger competitions than states.

I do agree though that the coverage of women's sport, especially gymnastics is very, very poor.
