2014 Worlds: WAG Qualifying

Nadia Boyce has done yet another stellar photo album of the Aussies, this time in podium training. Olivia also tweeted this morning a picture of yet another Aussie training leo - black and pink with 'spider web' pattern on the shoulders, they've nicknamed it Spider Pig!

In less frivolous news, as of 11:00 this morning it was made known by two unofficial (i.e. media not related to or endorsed by FIG or the official event website) tweets that Lauren Mitchell rolled both ankles in training and is out of the meet tomorrow night. I will await an official statement from GA and/or tomorrow's start lists before being certain she is out of the lineup, and if that turns out to be the case this is very sad news for the team and we wish Lauren all the best for a speedy recovery.

UPDATE 3:30PM - Gymnastics Australia released a statement confirming that Lauren suffered an ankle sprain and that it is "unlikely" she will compete these Worlds, the remaining lineup being Mary Anne, Georgia Rose, Larrissa, Emma, Olivia and Kiara. However, we have up until one hour before the competition to lock this lineup in.

Good luck to the team but this sounds disastrous. I think a top 12 finish will be an achievement at this rate.

What? Lauren was the team? She's the only one there? Have some faith when the chips are down. It's a huge loss but your comments aren't wanted or appreciated by the rest of Australia behind our girls that ARE competing. Get well Lauren and go Aussies.

Truly unfortunate.

11:32 anon, Lauren not competing would be a huge blow.

A high 214 total in qualies would be enough for Aus to qualify for TF, however, at Comm Games if you add the dropped scores to the 3 counted scores you only end up with a 209. That's counting Lauren's scores which we might not have if her injury is as bad as first reported. Apparently her sprains were so bad she was wheel-chaired out but ankle injuries can be odd in that sometimes they seem very severe at the time but heal relatively quickly.

With Lauren potentially gone the only other 14+ routines could be Larrissa's UB and Maryanne's BB. Nedov could potentially bring in a big BB score too but I haven't seen enough of her in recent times to say.

Larrissa could make UB finals with a repeat of her Comm Games UB routines but it will be tight with Great Britain and China both having gymnasts who should make finals still to come. BB scores have been pretty low so Maryanne is also a chance there but she would really need to hit because the Chinese and Romanians will most likely both have two girls in the finals and are still to come so the qualifying score will only go up.

Ankle injuries are real assholes, I wouldn't be counting on Lauren to compete! Hopefully the rest of the team can being the goods, let's keep positive about this guys! :)

From IG during warmups: "Lauren Mitchell was scheduled to compete here and even did podium training, but after that she injured her ankle on the landing of a 2-1/2 twist to punch front. It's a soft tissue injury, but there is just not enough time for it to heal well enough for her to compete. We all look forward to see her in Glasgow next year!!!"

GA can downgrade injuries' via the media when in fact they can be quite serious. So I hope Laurens injury is as they say it is and heals quickly.
