Delhi 2010: Team Touchdown

Media (mostly featuring this morning's sudden airport gag order) has started filtering in about our teams arriving in Delhi. Glimpse the team on a Nine News flash here.

MLC Gymnastics gives us some tidbits:

The team arrived in Delhi last night after a four hour stop over in Dubai and some shopping. It was 33 degrees and humid when they arrived. The team had to wait an additional 3 hours to wait for the Nigerian team so were late to the village.

The team is on its way to its first training session right now. They were in too late last night to do any training so did a short physical program and stretch in the apartment lounge. The transport is not up and running yet - so they are taking cars to training today.

There is a lovely picture of Ashleigh Brennan in today's Herald Sun, though no mention of her in the article that accompanies it. Thanks to the VWHPC for the scan:

MAG hopeful Luke Wiwatowski is profiled here.

"I’m a bit nervous of the competition, it’s my first big multi-sports competition," Wiwatowski said. He said athletes would have to get used to a lot of media reporting on gymnastics at the Games. "Gymastics is not a big sport in Australia,’’ he said. Of the negative reports about security and hygiene at the games, Wiwatowski said: "I have not heard anything that would stop me from going."

GA has put up a photo and video montage from Worlds camp! Clap your hands say yeah!

The VWHPC Facebook page has also put up some new pictures of the team trying on their official uniforms and checking out the Games Village (complete with huge mosquito nets in their rooms).

Leader Newspapers have an interview with first-time commentator Steph Moorhouse here.

Just wanted to leave a quick 'thanks' for your blog and your posts. I just discovered it today, but I'm enjoying

reading it, and I'll be back again soon.

hats? what were they thinking?

The girls are looking good. It's great to actually be able to see how they are performing, even if it was only in a short video.

It looks like Emily has upgraded her cossack turn from a full to a 1.5 and it looks like she's intending to do a double eventually. Larrissa has connected her stalder full to her dismount so that's another 0.1 to her E score. She should have a 6.5 E score on UB now if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe it's a new VHPC one? Same design, different colours. Very pretty!

Gosh...first a camp report? Now a video inside the AIS? I'm shocked!

GA and Peggy really are reading this blog.

They really really are.

Just for your info Georgia Simpson has been named as the reserve for the Aussie team at worlds

Anonymous said...

So where did that info come from?

Anonymous said...

That info could have only come from someone in the "know". Perhaps from one of the HPC involved in the trial?
Someone trying to stir some gossip?

Anonymous said...

She is listed as reserve in the nominative list published in IG magazine. The reserve can be switched out up to 24 hours before the event and can participate in podium training. In other words, Georgia certainly was the reserve and she may or may not still be the reserve.

GA have named 7 girls for World Championships, whoever is spreading the gossip needs to read the information correctly

Actually it is listed on the nominative register on the world championship website so it is no secret and no gossip.

With gymnasts being able to be changed in the last 24hrs could mean that either GS or GW could be the reserve.

Anonymous said...

What the nominative list means is that at this point in time that is the intention of the team - yes it can change and i suppose they will see how the girls pull up after Comm Games. Yes GA have named 7 girls but someone has to be the reserve and at this point it is GS. No one is gossiping, no one is being mean it is just a statement of fact at this point in time.

I love Steph Moorhouse, but I'm pretty sure that article is incorrect about her winning Australia's first major international medal. Allana Slater had some World Cup medals before Steph was competing as a senior.

Unless the article meant Steph was part of the 2003 team that won world bronze. In that case, it's just a terribly worded sentence and someone should be smacked around for letting such slop make it into print! :)

All the girls deserve a position on the team, and the reserve position is just as important, if not more, so whoever ends up being the reserve is just as valued. Go all girls, you work hard and deserve everything you get

There looks like there's a red leo (or deep fuschia) in that pack on the floor (Ash's pics on vwhpc). And something that is green and gold that looks like it has sparkles on it... I hope the pic of Ash in the paper isn't the leo- it was awesome when they busted out the green and gold in 2006, nice change from the pinks and purples!

They probably need the hats- its bound to be hot! Then again, they probably won't be getting out much!

Perhaps they were denied access to the gymnastics because they were delayed- illustrated by this quote:
Another article about the media ban... It's been a communication issue and to be honest it's probably not a bad thing," Moneghetti said.
"I'm here to protect the athletes arriving and especially if they were delayed, I think that exacerbated the system.

I assume the article about Steph Moorehouse was referring to her being part of the 2003 world champ bronze team. It probably just wasn't worded well. So Georgia S is the reserve, does that surprise anyone? No doubt Larrissa is now a lock given her bars and obviously very good again and she improving on the other apparatus especially floor. Georgia W is in CWG team and from what a read the worlds team was likely to be the CWG team plus one other which of course will be Larrissa. Georgia S will compete obviously is there is an injury and I'm sure she is delighted to be travelling with the team on a major comp as a first year senior given all the injuries she has had.

Marissa King from England has withdrawn from the Comm Games. She was England's best AA hope, VT and FX worker. It'll make things just that bit more easier for the Aus girls.

Emily should contend for VT gold against Imogen Cairns, the defending champ. If Lauren had a second vault she would probably medal quite easily. A DTY and a front tuck would probably be enough to get onto the podium.

Lauren should win the AA even with a fall. BB and FX look good for her too. Only event that Australia might not win is UB. If Larrissa were on the team she would be the huge favourite. As things stand at the moment it would have probably been better if Larrissa was on the team. Georgia W will most likely only contribute on UB and obviously Larrissa would make the better UB specialist. Just shows the importance of hitting routines at trials.

I'ld love to see Georgia W medal on UB though. Kind of like how Ash won silver in 2006. It would be nice if all the girls could leave with an individual medal.

Anonymous said...

bustoYes it would be nice if all the girls one an individual medal.
As mentioned Lauren should win AA and go close on BB/FX. Emily should go close on VT and should be a chance of an AA medal. Georgia B should be a chance of an AA medal and BB. Ashleigh possibly BB, but it depends on what happens in quals because although 3 can make the AA final only two in each apparatus and given what happened at trials Lauren and Georgia B should be ahead of her but you never know, also Ash might be a chance of a floor medal. As mentioned Georgia W may be chance to medal on bars. If Larrissa was in the team Australia would have been a good chance to win all the gold medals but she underperformed at trials? Just out of curiousity, who does England, Canada etc have as bars workers? Even though none of the Aussie girls are great at bars could one of them possibly be a chance to win it?

I dont know about anyone else. But I was really looking forward to seeing Mary anne compete.
Such a shame about her injury. Does anyone know what she is doing next year? Has she quit?

Anonymous said...

I don't think Mary-Anne has quit but I have no idea where she is going. I too feel very bad for her but by the sounds of it she is pretty tough and will hopefully contend for major teams in the future although her constant injuries are worrying.

It's so cool that the media actually cares about what our girls have to say for once! I really feel this is a chance for Lauren and the others to consolidate the public profile of gymnastics in Australia.

I have already been impressed with the amount of coverage they have got.

Anonymous said...

If anyone cares to remember GW was not named in the CWG team. She was originally 2nd Reserve.

Anonymous said...

What has GW being originally named as 2nd reserve got to do with this conversation

Anonymous said...

Read the thread and let"s assume it relates to her versus Georgia Simpson for the World"s line up.

Anonymous said...

Yeah I think that it was it is about. The anon should have explained it better because the thread had moved on from that topic.
