NATIONALS 2011: It's Kicking Off!

Who's excited? I'm excited!

WAG workplan can be found here.

I can't seem to find a full MAG workplan? Once I do I will amend this post.

Official event webbies are here and here.

Gymnastics Australia and the affiliated state associations should have updates throughout the competitions on Facebook; I believe they have started pages for both events so don't forget to "Like" them to keep up with the news!

(kudos to Bondsboi for collating so many pre-event resources over at GGMB)

I will bring you info as I receive it from sources on the ground.

can anyone tell me if the following are competing?

1. Zoe Lorenzin
2. Tierra Exum
3. Amelia McGrath
4. Nikola Chung?

if anyone is attending IDP10s session it would be great to see some videos of Celeste Loo, Aimee Warnock, Elisha Lai and Fraceska Fusha!

Anonymous said...

I won't be attending nationals but I think theres a few videos of Aimee and Elisha from State Championships this year on youtube if you want to have a look.

QLD has taken the level 8 9 & 10 team titles and for AA day 1 our girls are in very good standings.

Anonymous said...

Lorenzin, Wheeler and Exum are all not going.

Seems with so many girls missing injured, the competition will not be that great.

Anonymous said...

seriously? that is so disappointing. The one time I can go and watch and barely any of the best athletes will even be there.

Honestly there must be some toxicity in the club or national program as a whole if this many athletes can be out of action at once. I don't know many other countries where 50% of the field is missing from national championships.

It just makes no sense and really doesn't provide any incentive for spectators to go and watch.

Anonymous said...

The girls can't help it if they are injured, they don't do it on purpose!Sorry they dissapoint you.
They are not just entertainment!

Anonymous said...

They are entertainment. Isn't that what gymnastics is??? I agree with the above poster (anonymous @ 3.04).....It is such a shame there are so many injured athletes. Of course they don't get injured on purpose but it sure makes for a dissapointing nationals. Perhaps the gymnasts need to be managed a little better.

Anonymous said...

Word of warning. GA has instituted a photographic policy ... no SLR cameras with lenses greater than 100mm are allowed. Silly, but true.

Ribbit

Anonymous said...

These girls are having long term injuries that keep reoccuring, it is a shame seeing these are part of worlds trials and Zoe is extrememly talented.

Anonymous said...

Out of the 29 senior gymnasts on record at gymnastics Australia. Only 8 are competing. Wow.

Anonymous said...

OMG!! Where did you find that out?

Anonymous said...

I have seen the athlete list that only the athletes are given... however, i did re-look at the GA athletes profiles and have since realised about 3 or 4 have retired and not been updated so take back 29. Seniors competing are Sophie Budack, Chloe Sims, Larrissa Miller, Amaya King Koi, Ashleigh Brennan, Britt Greely, Lauren Mitchell, and Georgia Rose Brown.

Anonymous said...

I don't believe the Anon poster above.

MAM is competing, for a start. So already at least one mistake.

Next we'll have another "shit, Lauren just broke her leg!" post.

Unverified, anonymous infor is worth NOTHING and just causes confusion.

Anonymous said...

May I just defend myself by saying either MAM was either a late entry or she isn't competing AA. She would probably be competing on some apps. This is what I saw and if it is wrong I apologize. I assume some changes could well be made just like when they send the 'possible team' for worlds for workplan purposes. You're very quick to bash and be rude.

Anonymous said...

Mez, do you know anyone who is at Nationals in Perth and if there are any reports or videos on the National levels girls competition? Would love to read something about these girls as well as the Elite girls if someone has the time to post please.

Anonymous said...

Nationals levels are well under way.

NSW look rough on everything and are being talked about as a result.
Poorset finish we have all seen in a while.

QLD look great and have taken out every team title.

VIC 10s should have taken the level 10 title but threw it away.
They counted 14 falls on beam (from their 3 counting athletes) and plenty more from the other two.

Light training yesterday for the elites.
Not many there but a few had a hit out and more to arrive today.

We saw Ash, Georgia Rose, Alex Eade, Larissa, Chloe, Sophie, Scarlett......

I have forgotten half but the rest arrive today

Anonymous said...

There are a lot of girls injured, I hope they are getting well looked after.... as they are all extremely talented.I hope they all get better and get their time to compete.

Anonymous said...

You can go to http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=137091793033641 for some quick hits for the national levels kids today.

Anonymous said...

Looks like there will be a lot of injury petitions for the next Worlds trial.Thank goodness there still is some time before Worlds.Thats not a lot to choose from. Chloe may even HAVE to be considered.Peggy may not have a choice!Shame.

Anonymous said...

Only Lauren will compete for W.A?
What happened?

Anonymous said...

wow this is really atrocious. If anything, it works against Chloe, as now she cant prove she is better than the petitioners on the competition floor.

so petitions for

Chung
Little
Simpson
Donald
Lorenzin
Exum
Wurth
Joura
McGrath
Wheeler

It's gonna be a tight squeeze for those 12 spots.

Anonymous said...

WTF? What happened to everyone?

Anonymous said...

this article from today's West Australian says that Little, Chung, Mitchell and Simpson will all be competing:

Anonymous said...

Who has retired?

Anonymous said...

Thank you @ 9.26 and 10.31

Anonymous said...

I think they are out, the WA girls.

Anonymous said...

In the WA article it says that Little is in the Worlds Team already. Surely she has to prove her self just as all the girls do.She hasn't done a lot this year and now is out of Nationals because of injury? They might as well say that the team will be Lauren, Wheeler, Little,Miller and Brennan
and the rest of the field are fighting for the last 2 spots!Whats the point of the trials if they are already naming the team in Media articles. Should be a bit more careful I think. If it also happens to be that 3 of the WA girls mentioned in an article today are out with injury and it is known that they are out, not good reporting sorry!

Anonymous said...

Totally agree,WAIS should be a bit careful about what they put in the media. It makes the so called "trials" look like a farce.
All girls should be open to selection fairly.Oh, oops there's that word ,fair.

Anonymous said...

The Victorian L10s counted 14 falls?!? That's like at least 4 per gymnast. These girls are usually reasonably consistent - definitely not anywhere near that many falls. Such a shame.

Ed

Anonymous said...

Yes, I agree anon 3:24. A bit presumptuous of WAIS.Especially since Little hasn't competed much at all this year, only did yurchenko full in her only comp for the year and looked a little out of condition. Now out of Nationals from injury that I suspect she did in Slovakia.A big thing saying she will be at Worlds. Not much insentive for others if that is the case with the selection process.

Anonymous said...

Why did NSW look so rough on everything?

Anonymous said...

Simpson just did a knee injury in the past week, Little an ankle injury and Chung injured herself just before State Champs.

Anonymous said...

Re the news report stating the WAIS girls are already in the team - What you read is not necessarily what was told to the reporter. I know that nobody from WAIS assumes even Lauren is in the team and certainly would not want it reported that any of their girls are are pre selected. They fully expect each of their girls to earn their selection fair and square.

Mez said...

I think the "when THEY compete" could refer to the Australian team competing, not just Little and Mitchell. Admittedly the sentence is composed in a funny way...

Anonymous said...

Surely news articles must have to be passed by the Head coach or Head of Program,if not, the reporter could print anything. Not very well written as it does give the impression that they are already selected.

Anonymous said...

So it seems Little and Simpson will be on the sidelines again! They were there last Nationals but still made it through to selection for Worlds. Fingers crossed the same can happen again.I am so disappointed for Simpson. I was hanging out to see her in competition. That girl has had her fair share of injuries.Hope she gets better quick!

Anonymous said...

Newspapers and Tv do not check with anyone before publishing stories..once they have spoken to people to get their information they interpret the information and write their stories which quite often contain inaccuracies - much to the dismay of people who have given what they think are clear statements. In the end it can be very much the luck of the draw as to whether the story reads right. that is the way it is.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 10:10pm with regards to the fact that even Lauren has to earn her position, Perth Now have an article today that also states Lauren's position not only on the Worlds team but also on the Olympic team, so guess that blows that theory! Mind you, you would expect our top Gymnast to be in that position.Every one else should have to go through the selection process.

Anonymous said...

Apparently at Podium training Chloe's tattoos were very visible,
not pretty, was the feed back.

Anonymous said...

I think some of you guys are taking things a little to literally in regards to the worlds and olympic team already being selected. Obviously there are some more obvious choices for the team than others. Perhaps it shouldn't be written as though it is already fact but barring some pretty huge developments Lauren is going to be on both teams. The expectation is that Emily will be healthy for worlds and will make the team. Can anyone think of 5 girls who can add more to the team than Emily if they're all healthy? The fact is that Lauren is basically a lock for any team and that Larrissa's UB and Emily's VT will probably get them selected for worlds. Mary-Ann will most likely be taken as an AAer, especially if Chloe is on the outs with Peggy. So in reality there's really 2-3 spots on the team free and not 6.

Anonymous said...

Emily can only add value with vault at the moment and hasn't performed a double in comp this year and with an apparent ankle injury, will she by Worlds? If she is only doing a full then there are others doing fulls and who can add in other areas perhaps.

Anonymous said...

Well the time has come! Seniors are warming up as we speak!

Anonymous said...

The only two who are vaulting dty's are Emily and Zoe and both are injured but I hear zoe's is minor and pretty much almost healed

Anonymous said...

Is Victoria the only state with a team?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone got any info of how competition is going?

2011 national championships women's gymnastics Facebook page quick hits

And honestly, Gene Stephen writes all the gymnastics articles for the West Australian, and he sucks at it. Clearly a sports writer who gets lumped constantly with a sport he has no clue about and which is not in his area of interest or expertise. He never does a good job or puts in much effort - we should not be surprised that he did such a dodgy job with this recent article on Little and Mitchell
Brinds

Anonymous said...

Gene Stephen is actually a female reporter who I believe is lovely and has taken a special interest in Gymnastics, thank goodness, or we would not have the articles we have.

Anonymous said...

Brinds - you are way off the mark with your statements about Gene Stephan. She was the one who got the front page colour photo spreads with articles of Lauren Mitchell on the West Australian newspaper in 2 successive years (2010 & 2011) - absolutely unheard of that a female sports star gets that type of coverage. She has covered gymnastics for 23 years, is very interested in our sport, has done countless articles for gymnastics (I dare to say more then any single reporter anywhere in Australia). Just because she interpreted a statememt and reported it in such a way that it looked like some team members had been pre selected is no reason for someone to say that she is "lumped constantly with a sport he (sic) has no clue about and which is not in his (sic) area of interest or expertise. He (sic) never does a good job or puts in much effort - we should not be surprised that he did such a dodgy job with this recent article on Little and Mitchell" Have you ever met her (obviously not or you wouldn't call her "him"). How do you know she never does a good job - have you read all her articles? How do you know how much effort she puts in - are you privvy to her diary or daily planner so you can see how much time she devotes to it? I know her and she is an excellent reporter, loves gymnastics, put in effort when others don't, chases up stories, etc etc. Next time you make sweeping statemets like you have, please do not slander people you have no knowledge of - it is grossly inappropriate. We are very fortunate to have her on our side -she is a legend.

Anonymous said...

HERE,HERE!Well said! But I do feel she was of the mark a bit this time unfortunately.

Anonymous said...

Oh wah wah wah well I agree with brindabella - there are often mistakes and sweeping statements in the articles written by gene stephen. If she's such a gymnastics buff she ought to be able to get the facts right and report them correctly for her readership

Anonymous said...

Agreed. Gene Stephen's apparent effort isn't reflected in her articles, that's for sure. And obviously that's why they are almost always squashed into the last of the sports pages where no one can see them. I reckon the front pages after laurens win and the more prominent articles during Beijing about the under age scandals were actually more to do with readers of the paper writing letters to the editor - brindabella included. It was this prompting from the fans that pushed the west to put Lauren on the front page, certainly not gene Stephen's writing

I can not believe that nothing was written about WA National levels. They seemed to really step it up this year passing NSW and Victoria in Level 7...not to mention the Gold Medals on beam in Level 7,8,9 and also a Gold Medal on Floor in Level 7 and 10 and Silver Medal in the All-Around at Level 7 and 10...This is a big step for WA
