Vics Day 2: Winners Are Grinners

Congratulations to all the newly-crowned Victorian state champions!

I am disappointed I was unable to attend last night, but I am sure it was an exciting round of competition after Saturday's kick-start.

If you're attending a state championships in the next few weeks as we draw closer to Nationals 2011, I'd love to hear your news, notes and quotes!

Just read that Individual Apparatus Medal Winners (gold, silver and bronze) will be given nominative positions at London 2012 from this year's worlds... Prashanth may have a good chance even if the men don't qualify a team. Last time it sucked for him because not competing AA meant he couldn't get a place through the 'wild card' sort of entry they have. If he places he could well be a good chance for an olympic medal!

here is the provisional roster submitted for Japan Cup:

AUSTRALIA
LITTLE, Emily
MITCHELL, Lauren
BRENNAN, Ashleigh
MILLER, Larrissa
WHEELER, Georgia

As much as I like this team, I hope Mary-Anne and GRB will do well at camp and get spots to back up their Vics performances.

It would be good to see athletes who could use the experience get assignments, rather than the same core group every time. If one of them goes down with an injury before worlds, we will need to rely on inexperienced athletes for the Olympic qualifier, which you don't want to do.

Surly that list is nominative? Georgia Wheeler underperformed at Vics and isn't Emily a bit injured (only did bars in Slovakia)?

Yeh, it is nominative. Still it suggests to me that the intent is probably to send as good as we can get rather than those who could really use the experience. It's difficult because you want to reward merit but there aren't many other top 8 teams that always send the same athletes to international meets. Britain, for example, sends a huge range of girls to world cup meets.

Apparently Emily landed short in training and had a sore ankle which was why she only did bars in Slovakia. The week before at the WA trial she did the AA and attempted her DTY so it seems she was on the upward. Hopefully the injury was minor.

That's good about Emily.

Do you think its a funding thing, as in more medals = more $$?

I'd like to see some inexperienced girls go but if it funding is at stake, they all benefit from the best girls going. I think its a good opportunity for Lauren to work the new floor routine, maybe Ash too, but those two girls especially are pretty used to the big arena and don't need it perhaps as much as Georgia Simpson, GRB, Mez Monkton etc... oh well. Whatever works I spose.

I think these are the girls expected to make the worlds team. Last pre Olympic worlds Australia had a melt down and finished 11th. Back then top 12 qualified. This year it's only top 8. I think Peggy wants to go for the tried and true girls to ensure that we don't need to rely on the test event to qualify. So she'll want to make sure that the girls listed have as much competition experience as possible.

My biggest concern is that this could be an issue if one or more of these girls gets injured and is replaced by someone with very little big stage experience. I know that most of the younger girls competed internationally this year in England and Canada but I'm not sure if that compares to a Worlds/Commonwealth Games/Olympics.
