Beaver Gets a Fever

Bad news.

Olivia Vivian is out of the NCAA National Championships after being diagnosed with mononucleosis (or 'mono'). A nasty little virus, it is characterised by symptoms described here. She has not even been able to travel with her Oregon State team to Nebraska to cheer them on at the competition. She'll be out of action for several weeks.

This is quite sad news as we know how much Olivia was looking forward to representing her team and having fun with her OSU friends.

We wish her a speedy recovery and hope the team does their best in her absence.

Would you like to send a 'get well' message to our feverish freshman? Contact ozgymblog@gmail.com and I'll forward your good wishes on to Liv.

My understanding is that we call this mono disease GLANDULAR FEVER, sometimes affectionately and colloquially known as the "Kissing Disease". It is highly contagious and often spread through kissing, coughing, sneezing, etc.

It's definitely not fun. I've had Glandular Fever in the past, and it makes one terribly lethargic and fluey for ages. It lasts for weeks (even months) and it can and does recur (according to the specialist I saw). It usually hits when you're run down, lacking appropiate rest and haven't been eating properly or getting enough fresh air. It is often accompanied by strep throat. Glandular Fever itself cannot be cured by antiobiotics, but the strep throat can be cured by them. In my case, I had GF, strep throat and a UTI all at the same time. Yeah, fun!! The UTI and strep throat were cured long before the GF left me.

HSC and VCE students get GF en masse. So not only is it common for that age group, I think it is often a product of too much work and not enough rest. Resistance is low, ..... blah blah.

Hope you're feeling better soon, Olivia. Get lots of rest and keep up those fluids. xxxxxx

Oh, no! I've never personally had it, but I know several friends who have, and they say that mono sucks BIG TIME. Out of school for a few days to a few weeks, depending on the person. You feel worn out and awful. My mother knew someone in high school who had it so badly and missed so many days that she had to do homeschooling over the summer to catch up with the rest of the class. My best wishes to Olivia, and hopefully she'll be feeling better very soon!
