2011 Worlds: WAG Qualification Post-Mortem

Well then!

Not an utter disaster but definite room for improvement. I certainly hope Lauren is ok after her beam slip.

The FIG are very diligent, and have put up video already of Lauren's floor and Larrissa's bars at their channel.

While we anxiously await the standings after tomorrow's qualification rounds, let's not forget our guys are gearing up for their Tokyo campaign as well. Check out Luke Wiwatowski's really quite super duper floor from podium training, courtesy of Gymnastike!

Update, midnight: Yes, I am still awake! And Houston, we have prelims vids!

Aussie fan Ange has made the trip over to Tokyo to cheer on the team.

She is vigilantly uploading videos here.

Smashing stuff. Thanks, Ange... Thange.

Update, 12:43am

Still up.

Inside Gymnastics did a quick interview with Lauren after prelims. Check it out. She comes across as very calm and articulate (and talks upgrades)! Smart girls are smart. Smart and cool.

I thought the jump out of Lauren's last pass looked quite good - I think it was commented on that it looked a bit funny or something like that.

It didn't look like full split to me?

Yeah, I think you're right. I guess it's not just a dance move its actually a leap so it should be full split. I noticed Lauren seemed to finish her front layout pass a bit differently - she use to kind of kick her back leg up (sorry not very good with terms!!) but today it loooked like she did a changemont type jump.

Yes; hasn't she planned a jump out of that tumble now, as well? I was expecting one (not the usual arabesque). But whatever it was, she didn't have the time/momentum for it so had to go with the changement.

Arabesque - yes, that's the word I was looking for!! Yes, I imagine her timing was slightly off and that's why she didn't do the arabesque. I was thinking maybe she could do a changement jump out of her last pass if full split is a little difficult. Is there a reason why the gymnasts couldn;t do the same jump out of different tumbling passes? I guess you would want variety for choreography...but is there an actual rule or anything?

She was supposed to do a split jump out of the full in like she did at nationals but she didn't quite land well enough to do that. The rhythm and timing on the leap out of the double pike was good but the actual leap wasn't very well done. She's been doing that little beat jump out of her twist combo pass since Japan Cup so it looks like the arabesque is gone. Neither would get any CV as the salto needs to be at least a D.

She added back in the switch full but she didn't get credit for something in her routine because she should have had a 6.3 D score and not a 6.2.

Well that means there is lots of room for improvement in finals!
Just hope she makes it for beam, bad fall and she still managed to compete. Landing in straddle kills (from expereince)

Just watched the videos, the leo's look amazing!
And Lauren's routine was not at its full potential, OOB, first leap wasnt full split and neither was split jump out of double pike and only double turn. It will be interesting to hear what she is training after the finals are announced

I don't think she would make beam would she?? Ash and someone else I think scored higher than her. So, unless one of them make it and then pull out to make way for Lauren??

Is that jump an actual element under the code though? As far as I'm aware, it isn't in the code of points, therefore is not actually an element. It would be the same as doing a straight jump or tuck jump out of it. So I assume logically it wouldn't be worth anything. However I certainly am no expert on each element in the COP, so perhaps someone that is 100% sure can clarify that?

The rebound to split jump or whatever is there to eliminate the old step back to lunge or steps forward both of which would incur a 0.1 or a 0.3 or greater deduction. The rebound skill must be a skill in the COP and achieve the technical requirements for that skill to be recognised in terms of degree of split etc. So changement jumps or arabesques etc, while choreographic elements are not now skills in the COP.Stuck landings are really the aim!!!

One more consideration - if the A+ dance skill achieves its technical requirements and is "connecte" with a D+ skill it can achieve connection bonus adding to the D score.

Mitchell has no chance for beam - she is third of the Aussies and even their scores wont hold up after tomorrow.

Yeah I know....I was just saying if one of the others made it into the finals they may pull out to allow Lauren to step up (not sure of the rules surrounding this) - this is pretty much her only hope of making beam finals, but it is extremely unlikely. Ow well, better here at worlds than the Olympics. Just shows you though how difficut gymnastics is. I hate it when freak falls happen!!

Apparently Emily had the highest E score on UB of anybody for day 1. Who would have guessed that coming into today?

Thank you Ange for the videos of the team.

My pleasure! It was a privelege to cheer our team on -- fingers crossed we can do it all again in TF!

Emily got a 14.85 Vault at commonwealth so I expected it

Thanks Angi - It was great being able to watch them.

Emily's strength is obviously vault,I can not understand why she does not do 2 vaults. She could be able to make vault finals. She has been doing DTY for a while now.

I'd say not to bring team score down is why she doesn't do two.

Anonymous said...

yes that is true it is more important to get the team through. Emily knows this and is happy to do so. She is a good team player. It was the same at Commonwealth

Sorry, but Emily does'nt have a say. Nothing to do with the Team score and being a Team player, which I am sure she is.I would think this was up to the Head Coach and her coaches.Maybe in the future she may get to do two vaults.
