So. True. I love the purple from prelims & the purple & pink from comm games, but this monstrosity did not do a bunch of gorgeous girls justice!!!

it would have been nice in emerald green on the bottom and white on the shoulder...

Hi All, Just found on fox Japan cup showing on fox1, 1pm WA time Tomorrow (Wednesday 12th Oct)

Anonymous said...

you are really mean, the girls liked the leo. what a fair-weather friend you are.

Anonymous said...

I am sorry but gymnastics is a visual sport and there was nothing pleasing to the eye about that leotard! That is not nasty and does not make me a fair weathered fan!

I thought worlds were showing at 1pm tomorrow WA time? Because it's starting at 4 eastern states time so that means 1 WA time...
I'm getting so confused with times because I'm in Perth!

Hi Confused, I'm from WA as well and my Fox is set on WA time and it says 1pm tomorrow. And it usually is right but I am not promising

Who cares about their leo's what colour they are or style or who likes them or not. Our AUST girls qualified for the olympics and I think that is fantastic and I dont care what colour they did it in. yeah go ozzies :)

I haven't laughed so hard in DAYS!

So anon 2:06, if I watch at 1 will I be seeing Japan Cup or worlds you reckon?

The Foxtel website this morning is saying that it's the World Championships at 4 p.m. (AEDST). Hopefully that's correct.

Anon 1:23 they can like it all they want. I happened not to like it, and I can tell I'm not alone.

My mum hates my Green Lantern t-shirt for some reason but I wear it, and I recognise that the world I go out into sees me wearing it. I'm not saying "Boo, we should throw tomatoes at the girls for wearing it, boooo let's make young ladies cry, booo let's photoshop them to look silly". I'm just saying, it was rather an unflattering colour combination that I'm not a fan of and I think it did the team a disservice. I actually find it hard to believe that, deep down, every member of the team was ok with that choice and wouldn't have voted for a green and gold, or at least something not so jarring if given the opportunity.

Even GA said we "wouldn't miss" the girls out on the floor in it so they themselves recognise that it was certainly something.

Mez said...

We are not saying the GIRLS are ugly, we are not saying their GYMNASTICS was ugly or that their EFFORT in the competition was ugly.

It's an utterly poor colour combination on their leotard, simple as that. Nice design, but a complete misfire on the chosen colours.

Anonymous said...

What a joke!
They just need the clown noses and the outfit would be complete!

Who chose this crapotard? The Australian girls standard is sub standard, no need to say to the world "Look at us!" and highlight it.

Anonymous said...

Haha I love the picture comparison on the front page Mez. You're right they do all look like the Nerds box.

I have to agree with the above posters.....that leotard combinatin is just wrong. Whether the girls liked it or not, it's just horrific. They look like chocolate wrappers not elite athletes. Clearly their scores reflected on that last night.

And no I don't hate the girls or their gymnastics or their looks or their style - just the leotard - ugh!!!!! What was Peggy thinking?

Anonymous said...

I think maybe there is a clear message to GA here.

Peggy has lost the plot!

If the 8th place finish and no apparatus finalists wasn't enough of a highlight, the leotard was.

Time for a new head coach Australia

lol at Nerds box comparison! That leo was a complete and utter shocker. I was embarrassed for the girls, even more so than the glaringly apparent gulf in standards between the top 4 place getters and ourselves. What is with that anyway? Our girls certainly have the natural talent and ability, but the country's training program, lack of government funding etc etc etc is really hurting our/their potential in matching it on the world stage. That much was evident last night more than ever imho. And it is not the girl's fault. Something needs to be done or we will quickly slip outside the top 8. And we've worked way too damn hard for that to happen grrrr

Still proud of our girls for getting in the top 8. They deserve a medal for surviving wearing those hideous leos if for nothing else!!

I agree. We need to up our difficulty levels. Even with hit routines we were never going to be close. I am concerned when Lauren leaves as to who will replace her. Imagine if she wasn't there.
Maybe this might be a wake up call that we need to take more risks and be less conservative.

Anonymous said...

Risks? our girls get injured enough as it is...we don't have the depth of gymnasts like other countries, Lauren was injured going into Worlds..imagine if she had been unable to compete at all? half our National Squad were injured. The Code needs to be altered to allow more executional scores rather than injure our girls for more difficulty that damages young bodies.Only my opinion! does anyone else agree?

Anonymous said...

We struggled to put a healthy team together the past 2 years that I know of. It's not about being less conservative, or uping the diffuclty, it's more about Australia struggles with depth to choose from and then the small group of Seniors we have, many are fighting injury. How many talented girls were not available this year? It's not like Peggy has 50 girls to choose from! How many were at trial 2? Not many! What is the extent of Lauren's injuy at the moment? The code has a lot to answer for. Yes other countries manage to put good teams together but you need to look at funding and depth behind Teams such as USA, Russia, china and Romania.I think Peggy does the best she can with limited resources and the girls train hard, we just don't have enough!

Anonymous said...

Very clever with the Nerds Mez! haha. It makes the Leo look even worse! You would have seen it out on the floor as well amongst the other countries, would have looked worse.Shame

Anonymous said...

Good on Lauren for top scoring on floor last night. Shame about the 8th place but the goal was to make the olympics and they got there.

The leotard is a totally different topic though... wtf were people thinking? I was just saying on the weekend at acro nationals that pink and orange is a terrible colour combo and then the Aussies take the floor in it. It really REALLY does look like the nerds box. Oh well, better to bust out the neon at worlds than the olympics (I hope!)!

Anonymous said...

It is so hard to compete with Nations that are consistantly scoring 14,15 and 16's.
Mary annes fall was costly to the team.So was Laurens on vault, but at least she made up for it with floor. If MAM was struggling with her foot, should have used someone more stable that would not have fallen. Glad that was'nt the Qualifying round.

Anonymous said...

I don't even want to think what Lauren and Emily will wear in the AA!

Anonymous said...

My four year old daughter is a fan of the leos!!

Anonymous said...

So do you guys reckon what will be shown on fox sports on Thursday will be men's team final? It must be right?

Anonymous said...

anon 4:14pm , a couple of falls didnt make much difference to aust position, we were way behind the top countries anyway, and this didnt happen at prelims , so it doesnt matter,Aus qualified for 2012 olympics , thats what mattered, now they will train hard and improve, but you can never guarantee a gymnast will never fall at a major event.

Australian women gymnasts would have maintained the 6th spot without the mistakes from Maryanne Moncton (-1.00 fall & -.20 connection) & Lauren Mitchell (-1.00 at least). They finished 4th best on floor. Maryanne had a 14.10 in qualifying, so she was the logical choice. There really was not another choice, perhaps Emily, but she would be a 13.5 at the most, so what do you do? Who would have thought Lauren would fall on vault? Give the girls a break, they did their best, it is not as if they made the mistakes on purpose. Are you going to the Olympics? They are. Those of you who chose to make judgments need to own up to your words. It is really an accomplishment (not really) to sit in your dark room, behind a computer and type out snide remarks about young girls who put thier maximum efforts to represent thier country, without having to say who you are. I dare one of you cowards to actually put your name on your blog. YOU who criticise are the failures, NOT those beautiful, hardworking, athletics girls. I don't mind putting my name on my comments, I dare you to own up to your mindless comments....that would be the least you could do.

Sincerely,
Tim Watson-a gymnastics enthusiast from Sydney

I was surprised they put the BB line up as Ash-MAM-Loz. I would've thought it'd be MAM-Ash-Loz. They have been going on and on about how rock solid Ash is on beam of late, and while I understand it's good to have a solid lead off gymnast I was still surprised that she didn't get that second position in the line up.

Good on you Tim Watson you said it nice and clear for all the SMARTIES on this blog.....Instead of critizing all our Gymnast Male , Female , Junior and Senior WHY can't you just be PROUD of all of them they tried their BEST and doing all of these so all Australian will be PROUD with or without a medal as long as you all come back home without any INJURIES that's what matter most .Who doesn't want to win and bring home a medal and all our GYMNAST are aspiring for but it's a tough competition .So have fun enjoy yourself and don't worry about all the whinger DOWNUNDER Am very PROUD of you ALL.

Were we the only team from 5th to 8th place to have errors? I'm sure the same can be said for all the teams above us as well.

Oh yeh and my name's Joe Bloggs bahaha :)

Leo's were really undesirable. however I'm sure that Peggy will not make that mistake again. It is all about the looks for her and from what I've heard NO ONE liked it. The leotards arrived late from 'the supplier'... however in saying that I do not understand why they did not just wear a national team (not worlds specific) leotard.

On another note. There is MINIMAL support for our senior gymnasts. There is no pay. For an 18+ elite gymnast, living out of home in Aus he/she has to support themselves. Training fees (if no scholarship) Medical Fees. Travel costs and general living costs. Why the bloody hell could they afford to pay for all of this without having a full time job? And how are they suppose to keep a full time job when they train up to 40hrs a week? And yet at 16, 16!!!! Jordan Wieber gets to accept endorsement contracts.
