Interesting. The first list, does that really mean anything?
Brinds
Emma Collister got ripped off. Junior national champ and the silver and bronze medallists are put in the Olympic squad but she is not!? Please explain.
Also, looks like Georgia, Emma and Amber will be missing out on worlds. The camp the top list is for is the camp where worlds trials will be held.
*eta I mean the bottom list, not the top list, is for worlds trials.
Maybe Emma doesn't get named because she can stay Junior next year whilst Zoe and Georgia Wheeler are old enough to be senior?
Where was Emma Dennis on the olympic squad?
Emma Dennis is in the same position as Georgia Bonora - coming back from injury, and not at full strength yet, but apparently wanting to try for worlds.
The bottom list is basically those who competed at nationals. They are not all seniors so they cannot be all eligible for worlds. I think they are basically the fit athletes who are going to the camp so I think them being called the GA/AIS Olympic Squad is a bit strange.
Maybe they will add Emma, Georgia, and Amber as visiting athletes if they are fit enough to trial when the time comes? Although I don't know because I think they usually announce the visiting athletes when they announce the squad. Can anyone clarify?
I assume the reason Emma Collister is not in the GA/AIS Squad is because she can't go senior until 2011. It seems like the only logical explanation.
Brinds, I think the first list is actually what it says, senior national squad. It includes seniors who will not be able to go to worlds but maybe can make teams in the future. Dasha injured, Emma & Georgia getting fitness back etc. They are still obvioulsy on GA and Peggy's radar but are unlikely to compete in the near future.
I would be concerned that Georgia, Emma and Amber will not be able to go to worlds because they do not appear to be going to camp.
Does anyone understand what the prerequisite is for inclusion in the junior national squad?
This is the only possible reason I can see for Emma not being included (see below). Perhaps she is not available for the training camps?
2.2 It is a condition of selection that an athlete attends the compulsory
Senior National Training Camps, unless an athlete has had an
application for special consideration in relation to that Training Camp
accepted by the Selection Committee (Part A – Article 5).
Anon 12.11 - the selection criteria for all squads and camps are on the GA website under technical information.
The fact Emma Collister is not old enough to be senior until 2011 does not stack up as the reason for her non-inclusion in GA/Olympic Squad.
In 2012 she obviously will be old enough to compete at the Olympics.
Which then makes you question whether selection for squads is at the disrection/whim/bias/pay-back of those doing the selecting.
Such a dodgy sport at times.
If there is confusion, the sport should communicate clearly and openly to combat mistrust.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing about Emma Collister, she is clearly going to be eligible for the London Olympics. I don't think we should take that much notice of the GA/AIS Olympic squad, I think it may change a bit in the next three years.
Wait, so they're having trials for worlds with only 4 seniors?
I hope not but if the trials are happening at the camp then that may be the case.
I too was interested in how squads were selected and when looking under technical information I noticed that the national awards have not been updated since 2006. I found that very odd, it can't be that hard to do.
Well it says in the selection criteria that you can attend the worlds selection camp either a) by making GA/AIS Olympic squad at nationals or b) as a selected senior athlete.
The AIS/GA part is those who are funded to go but it seems they can still have other self-funding 'selected senior athletes' attending - at a camp earlier this year they also had Hamman, Yeo, Turko, Victoria Williams, Karina Brooks (status?) etc. I find it hard to believe they would have trials with only 4 girls.
So maybe this isn't the final complete list for the camp, but just the list of those who have earned their funded place.
Understandably if Amber/Emma/Georgia are still possiblities but not certainties for trials they would not give them a funded place.
Does that make sense?
Most camps do have visiting athletes listed but it was mentioned earlier in this discussion that they are usually listed when the GA/AIS squad ix listed. The camp starts in less than three weeks so you think attendees would be known.
I don't think we'll know about Emma and Georgia until someone from Waverley comments or until the camp itself.
