Georgia Wheeler's floor from qualifications:

You can glimpse Emily marching into the vault final here. I'm hoping full coverage of the final will be up somewhere soon!

Big tumbles , but thats about it!?!

Her a-score was only 5.0 too, so she doesn't get much out of the big tumbles....

That routine is just awkward. The number 1 rule for a successful routine is to keep the flow going in the movement. It looks weird to stand there and then just randomly do those sharp poses.

I think the routine is workable, there just need to be changes between the second pass and the full pirouette (remove those weird arm circles and side lunges - way too 'levels'). Then rework that odd part between the straddle jump and the third pass where she is just writing around on the floor. Then those couple of poses before the last pass have gotta go.

I won't blame the choreographer entirely though, I think the routine would be much better if Georgia wasn't so wooden. The moves before the pirouette and at 1:11 could be lovely with more work on expression.

Yes, I'm sure that is definitely not how the choreographer means for her routine to be done.

or maybe she just isn't a natural dancer. your not getting JUDGED on the dance, only the skills. some people just arn't natural dancers and shes just doing the best that she can. so STOP DISSING HER!

Um, that is probably the dumbest thing I've ever read! 'You're not getting judged on the dance' - Yes you are! Artistry deductions go up to 0.5! Presentation and expression is such an important part of floor.

And even if she wasn't getting judged, Australia should endeavour to put up routines embodying the spirit of artistic gymnastics.

I would hate to see us become like Great Britain - boring gymnasts with skills but no substance or style. Artistry is one of the things our girls usually do best.

Australia is in need of some good Artistic floor workers!Obviously Emily and Georgia's strengths are elsewhere.I hope the Juniors at Pac Rim can offer more artistically to watch for the team and the crowd. Does anyone know what the highest scoring vault is and why Australia seems to mainly push the DTY? Surely this can't suit everyone. It seems that most programs only push the girls to learn 1 vault.

The juniors are much more expressive - well GRB and Amelia McGrath at least. Georgia has a new floor routine which is just gorgeous and Amelia is always a pleasure to watch out on the floor.

Besides your awful English skills, you also know no very little about gymnastics judging...

And this is a blog if you haven't noticed. This is what blogs are for - dissecting, discussing, commenting and providing others with your opinion on a particular subject. We all read and comment on this very blog for that exact reason.

We all know Georgia is doing her best - she's an elite gymnast, and she's a fabulous gymnast. We may still analyse and criticise her routine in the same way the gymnastics judges scoring her would have done.

Im a bit concerned for Australia if this is our "Core" For CWG and Worlds! Hope Lauren's ankle gets better in a hurry! I hope to see some better gymnastics at Nationals, hopefully some of the recovering girls will surprise us!

Realistically, I don't think there's a chance of TF at worlds or CWG gold if this is the best we've got. These girls will no doubt improve in future but right now they are not really at a high standard. When I think about 2006's new seniors and their level (Dasha, Hollie, Melody, Georgia, Shona etc) it's frightening compared to now.

Even though they had execution problems here, their routines are still very low valued for the international level. It continues to baffle me why they don't begin learning high level skills earlier.

We can't put up a pike front 1/2 for vault, or a 5.0 routine on floor, or 5.3 routines on bars when other top 12 countries are up at 5.8+. Look at how France did for example. How telling is it that with a hit beam routine Emily scored 8.075 execution.

I think the Canadians are also much better than us leading into Pac.

The recovering girls will be required to do well. Gerogia/Shona for beam and solid bars, Shona for vault too. Emma D is clean and versatile. Laurne too obviously.

Do elite gymnasts take dance classes like they do in some countries - and I don't mean gymnastics version of dance, but an actual dance (eg ballet, jazz, contemporary) class - they wouldn't need to spend much time doing it to learn a few little things that might make their routines look a little more artistic?

Most Australian gymnasts do Ballet in their home gyms around once or twice a week.

Where would we be without the doom and gloomers! You guys sound like a broken record pronouncing the dire straits of Australian womens gymnastics.

Passionate you may be but pessimistic spells out your middle names.

Lighten up and get off the athletes' backs.

Far too many experts on this blog for my liking!

I am taking my interest elsewhere.

I'm surprised at some of these comments. I think the weaknesses are obvious but overall I think we are in good shape as a team.

Also, France sent their top TOP girls to Paris. Only 1/4 of our 2009 worlds team went, and even she was recovering from injury. Go figure.

A couple of upgrades and some polishing up and they will be fine.

Even if you look at our vault prospects, we have like 7 girls working on or already competing DTYs. By 2012 we should be much improved there, and that's a good start.

I agree, Nade! We may not have medalled here but I found the competition quite encouraging!

So we have vault: DTY from Emily, Shona, Emma (and Lauren?). Gymnasts like Georgia with good power, too. Dasha if she ever returns? Naomi Russell?

Bars: Larrissa, Georgia, GRB, and even Lauren can post a solid team score. Fingers crossed for Dasha to be back. Naomi!

Beam: Lauren, and I think Larrissa eventually. Waverly girls are solid here, though not spectacular. Don't know enough about the others' programs. Mary-Anne Monckton?

Floor: Lauren, Emily and Georgia, Dasha if back, Emma, Shona and Georgia White, GRB and Amelia McGrath. Ashleigh Brennan?

And I KNOW there are heaps of girls that we haven't seen enough of that will factor in somehow.

Not too bad!

Go Aussies!

Calm down, everyone!

I think Georgia W in particular is going great guns, and will continue to do so once she gets more confidence under her belt.

As the MLC release from her coach said in regards to her floor alone - "Considering 12 months ago that Georgia had put her first double pike into her floor routine, she has come a long way in a short period of time!"

Let's just wait and see what gets put out on the floor at PacRim before we pass final judgement on our anchors' CWG and Worlds prospects. We could have some big surprises. Look at what happened with Larrissa Miller by the end of 2009, A LOT of words (and hats) ended up being eaten!

Have competed DTYs: Emma D, Shona, Lauren, Emily.

Working on them: Mary-Anne, Sophie, Georgia W, Britt Greeley

there are also 1.5s from Naomi/ Georgia B, and tsukuhara layout fulls from Collisters which will no doubt be upgraded in future when they become seniors.

What does Zoe Lorenzin vault? She seems quite the pocket rocket but she has been out of competition for ages. She had a nice layout yurchenko at the start of last year.

Anonymous said...

From what i've seen of Zoe in the past she was training towards a DTY on vault but can't remember if there was a second vault - i think so but not sure. Zoe has great beam and wonderful dance on floor - hope all her injuries are over and we can see her being able to put her stuff out there

I worry about CWG with both GBR and Canada quite strong this cycle. Though Beth Tweddle is not competing apparently as its too close to worlds and that is their priority of course- is it ours??

With worlds do we have to make Top 12 this worlds to make Olympics? What is the deal there??? Hopefully most coaches are training their gymnasts to peak at that point- we definitely want to qualify a team and so many countries ahve improved this quad!

Anonymous said...

How can Mary-anne be training a DTY , at camp she had a boot on after further surgery on her ankle?

Anonymous said...

What's DTY?

Anonymous said...

Double twisting Yurschenko.

It's the Vault that Emily is doing in the video posted on this blog.

Thanks guys

I thought Great Britain have already come out and said they are sending a B team to Commonwealths cause their priority is Worlds?

I'm not sure whether its thhe equipment or the girls not being used to the podium or whatever, but after watching all the routines that are on this blog, the girls just looked really HEAVY to me.

Anonymous said...

What was her score for that routine? It wasn't too impressive I must say, but then I do expect her to get better, since she is such a newie. That was a good effort for being so new.

The dance was very staccato (more a series or sharpy edged poses than nice flowing dance actually) and cheeses crust, the amount of times she had flexed feet was just cringeworthy. But still, if Peggy and co think she has the goods to be the core of the 2010 teams then I trust that. She's seen what the girls can do more than the rest of us have. Maybe this was just an off night for Georgia W.

With the lack of artistry I would have expected much better tumbling. But to have neither is a little worryng!

In regards to who we have coming through, I agree with the post a little further back, but we also have Emma Nedov who won Jnr beam at Nat clubs. Looked really good down at the camp.

Mary anne seems to be always injured - consistency needs to be a theme in our team!
