Rotterdam 2010: Apparatus Finals Day 2 Preamble

We farewell Rotterdam tonight with the last night of apparatus finals and one more shot at Aussie gold. Lauren Mitchell is in action in both the women's finals tonight. She is looking to equal (or better) her silver medals on both events at the 2009 World Championships.

CARN LOZ!!!

You can see the event start list here. Lauren's up second on beam and last(!) on floor.

The finals kick off at 11pm AEDST (2pm Rotterdam time) so, if you're like me, tune in after the finale of Sherlock. I am not paid to promote the show. I just love it.

*** I have taken down the Veetle feed link because there has been some confusion and someone at Veetle is under the impression that I am personally providing the feed. Through here. I'm not! I was just linking to the place where there was a feed last night, I thought it was a permanent thing. Err... sorry. I machines no work good. If I find something else, I'll post it here.

This event final is really wide open. If Lauren can nail her layout like in Delhi and get her switch ring credited she should medal. That said I've been having an awful feeling that even if she does hit and deserves to win she won't get the gold because she's gone so early in the line up. I get the feeling the judges will be more lenient with the girls from the bigger countries, especially those that have underperformed so far, (Romania with Porgras, Bross for U.S and Deng for China).

You forget - on day 1, the first two finals were won by the 'first up' gymnasts.

I've got all my fingers and toes crossed here!

The way my sporting weekend is going, Lauren has to win! It's been all nail-biting action with supremely happy outcomes, so I expect the same from Loz!

On a different note I have noticed the gymnasts tend to just wear their leotards during medal presentations. This is a bit of a trend in the last few years isn't it? I remember in '96 the American girls wore their tracksuits after winning the Olympics,as one example. Gymnasts now these days tend to come out in their leotards. Can't say I am a fan of it - I think they should wear their tracksuit since this is what other sports do - you don't see the swimmers getting up in their bathers. This would be considered dressing inappropriately. I know it's not that big a deal, but I think it kind of....somehow sends out that 'little girl' message which is definitely not the case these days with some of the winners in these W.C being quite 'old.' Thoughts?

anon 537pm - seeing as most gymnasts don't seem to be able to be given tracksuits that actually fit I doubt it will help with the 'little girl' image to see them standing on the podium in oversized tracksuits! lol

Anon 4:02, I wouldn't say that US women have underperformed thus far. They won silver behind Russia in the team finals and I think the Russians would have been favourites.
The AA may have been disappointing for the US with Bross only winning bronze not silver and Raisman destroying her medal chances with her bar routine but the first day of apparatus finals went well for them. Sacramone nailed her vaults to win the gold. Bross and Sloan did well on bars to finish 3rd and 4th, considering they didn't have the difficulty to match Tweddle and Mustafina.

does anyone have a link for Georgia or Lauren's beam in all around?

Hey anon 5:37.
FIG rules state that medal presentation occurs in leotard.
The gymnast would not be treated as being in inappropriate attire if they wore a tracksuit.

seems like the NOS feed is not working tonight....

FIG states that medal presentation occurs in leotard?? I had no idea, but I thought there must have been a shift of some sort to cause everyone to be in leotards these days. I didn't mean to say the gymnasts were dressed inappropriately wearing leotards....I was just thinking that's not what swimmers do, but ofcourse that doesn't mean we have to do the same. Clumsy wording on my part.

Good luck Lauren! I am really impressed with how Lauren and Georgia have spoken to the media - they have handled it well.

Peggy definitely made a good decision to send our best team to worlds and commonwealths - the girls have done well to handle it all. I would imagine the tiring part would be getting yourself 'up' mentally so many times
