Rotterdam 2010: Training

The dust of Delhi has settled and now the Team Aus convoy sets its sights on Rotterdam.*

The Couch Gymnast is on the scene (ain't she always?) and has some cracking photos from WAG training up to view here. Keep your eyes on her blog (as well as this one, aheheheh) for more news and views on Team Georgia Team Australia from the World Championships.

You can also see a couple of training pics at the official Facebook page for the Victorian Women's High Performance Centre and this page here (thanks, MCB!).

Couchy was kind enough to send me the following report and additional pics of Team Australia in training...

I watched the Aussies train today- mostly on bars. They look good.

Larrissa nailed a few sets and did the most beautiful dismount I have seen in a long time!

Georgia Bonora looked good. She seems to be coughing a little, so I hope she is not getting sick.

Wheeler looked pretty good too. Her Tkatchev is pretty hot, as Peggy says. She also looks very clean.

Emily Little seemed to be struggling a little today. She was quite upset when I arrived, so maybe she had hurt herself. She seems qutte tired, as though India took its toll a little, but she is still performing well. Sheer talent will push that little gun through.

Lauren- well apparently she did another corker floor, but I missed it. Her bars is okay, she is working hard on it. She was vaulting well and seems to have energy to spare.

Ashleigh Brennan, the quietest Australian was quietly doing her work cleanly and well.

Georgia Simpson looked simply gorgeous on bars. She swings soooo beautifully!

I will see their other rotations tomorrow at podium training and keep you updated.

Thanks, TCG! You're ace.

Australia's podium training session is/was today, but closed to the public.

are you going to post the training report she says she sent you?

Of course I will, I only just discovered it in my inbox!

Read this quote from Martha:
Something new on FIG rules, after the qualifications are over, you're able to change your line-up and say these six are my team and now this other person will be the alternate if you feel, based on the first day of competition, that you would like to do a change, or if you have some injuries occurring to your team.

So we can change the alternate after qual round?!?!

OMG I'm dyyyyying for GSim to make the team. I hope they come to their senses!

Where/how can we view vision from the event?

Anon @ 5.18 -- where is that quote from, if I may ask?

the marta quote was on the intl gymnast forum

It was in an interview Martha did with a newspaper I think. Found here:

Its under the heading On Not NAming an Alternate...

Have read a couple of brief reports about Aussie podium training. Sounds like Wheeler is only doing the double pike off bars (the 5.1 routine), and may have freaked out on her beam dismount.

Still difficult to tell stuff about lineups because seems all girls pretty much did every event - eg. all 7 did floor.

Only 4 vaults were mentioned - the two DTYs and Wheeler's pike front and Ashleigh's tsuk full. I hope we have Larrissa and GBo still doing their yurchenko fulls because we don't want to rely on Wheeler's pike front at only 4.6.

Sounds like Bonora is still going for the extremely watered down floor with the full twist.

I don't think Marta Karoyli has it quite right. Wouldn't be the first time she's misinterpreted rules like this.

ok I just went back and looked again and this is the order they did on bars :

Mitchell
Simpson
Wheeler
Bonora
Little
Miller

and beam (only these 4 mentioned):

Bonora
Mitchell
Wheeler
Simpson

and floor:
Bonora
Little
Brennan
Miller
Mitchell
Wheeler

Simpson

whenb do we find out who the alternate is? Or is it definitely Simpson becasue she was the alternate on the nominative list?

Anonymous said...

They don't have to name the alternate until 24 hours before- they still sound like they're undecided

Where did you read the training report? Is it on the net?

Has anyone heard about Larrissa competing vault? There hasn't really been any indication either way, and it could affect who is alternate.

If Wheeler or Simpson need to do vault for Larrissa, then Wheeler should get picked. But if it is a matter of who is the better UB/BBer, I think I would go with Simpson to give her the experience, although I do really like Wheeler's bars.

lol. That picture of Lauren is CLASSIC! Talk about capturing a moment, I'll bet that expression was only on her face for a split second. It is an equal to the awesome pic of Natalia looking at Dad Vlad in the WAIS book.

Simpson has a higher DV on both B/BB than Wheeler so I would probably go with her. The experiance would be valuable to her and Miller has had a number of international meets. She is so elegant on BB.

Anonymous said...

Sorry I meant Wheeler not Miller

Anonymous said...

It would be stupid if they took Wheeler over Simpson if they are looking for an UB/BB girl.

Firstly, we know all the girls hit bars during podium training, and from the sounds of it both Wheeler and Simpson did reasonably well on beam except Wheeler's dismount. So they can't use the excuses that Simpson falls too much or is not as prepared.

Here is what was written on a forum about beam :

About Wheeler:

full turn sitting position, front tuck, ff-back tuck, side somi, full turn not complete, ff-ff layout, seemed to put her foot wrong and did only a layout.

About Simpson:
nice start at side, split on the beam, ful turn leg horizontal, woble at front tuck, split-wolf, breaks combi free walkover to LOSO, repeats is: good. Split jump-pike back, fre cartweel, long pause before DM, ff-ff double tuck: knee together, fought for landing but had to take a step.
----------------
Second, the DV. Wheeler looks to be doing a 5.1 routine on bars compared to Simpson's which is in the mid 5s. Simpson also has a beam .6 higher than Wheeler's.

It will be so useful to have an extra high valued beam as backup. We have GBo and Mitchell as anchors, but we need 2 more good counting scores for prelims. After her CWG meltdown Brennan is an unknown quantity.

Basically, there is no use for Wheeler. It is likely she will have the dropped scores on both bars and beam, and her DVs are the lowest of the whole team, whereas Simpson will have the third highest DV on bars and the third highest on beam, making her possibly useful for team finals.

Peggy seems to love Wheeler and her attitude though, so I wouldn't be surprised if she still got selected. Just annoyed.

Anonymous said...

But we also have to remember that Wheeler was only the second reserve for CWG. Simpson pulled a hamstring just before CWG trials so couldn't trial. But according to the camp report " Simpson will be a surprise package for many" and Wheeler's conribution on bars at CWG was really negligable, and did'nt add to the team score.Peggy also said that she has known Simpsons potential since she was the Level 8 National Champion where she scored Gold, gold, gold, silver and all round gold. She has just had an unfortunate 3 years with injury and the sad passing of her sister. I say GIVE HER A GO !!!!!!Peggy.

I agree, Wheeler has had her opportunity at CWG and now it is time to select for precisely what the team needs. I know Wheeler is better AA and beat Simpson at the trials but the fact is that we don't need an AAer, just an UB/BBer.

Wheeler is not exactly renowned for her consistency on beam either - fell in Paris, at Pacrim, and at nationals. It is a terrifying prospect having her in the lineup, especially after what happened on beam at CWG. Beam is really the event where we can get an advantage over other countries with strong performances.

Cmon pick Gsim!!!!

Happy to see so many people supporting Simpson as she is a lovely gymnast and I would love to see her at worlds. But in reality, surely her chances are pretty low?

When Peggy/selection committee submitted the nominative entries, even though they weren't final, she obviously had in mind that Simpson would be the reserve.

I just wonder what would change that mindset between the camp and the deadline for the final lineup, since at Commonwealths, Wheeler essentially did her job, even though it was the lowest scoring routine and only on that one event.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above comments re the camp and GSimpson being placed as reserve, maybe Peggy's hands were tied re Wheeler at that time being a team member at CWG. Remember Wheeler was not chosen previously for CWG, but with the departure of Shona and Mary Ann's injury she then automatically got into the team, which has been the story since Nationals last year when Aus competed against Japan, she has been the Reserve since then but through injuries from team members has made the team.So yes ..give Simpson a go. Will our voices be heard all the way to Rotterdam?

Anonymous said...

I'd pick GSim over GWheel anyday!

Anonymous said...

me too, Wheeler's gymnastics is very nice but she needs more time to mature as a competitor and upgrade her routines.

She has had quite a few opportunities for international experience this year, many that she has not done so well at, and I think it is a good idea to share the opportunities around.

Simpson is clearly a much better fit for the team so it is logical anyway.

I haven't read all these comments, but i heard there was great debate about the Georgias and reserve. Wheeler looks grteat on bars. Simpson lovely, but having more issues. Wheeler was having trouble on beam, though.

Everybody here seems to really dislike the prospect of having Georgia Wheeler on the team. Albeit, she had the lowest bars score at CWG, but she did her job right? She competed on only one apparatus, which was last, and hit a fairly good routine under an enormous amount of pressure. So yes, Georgia Simpson may have higher difficulty, but when it comes down to it, can she hit under pressure like that at her first international competition representing Australia?
